Background / History

Divine Origin

Shen Yangge’s recovered memories identify him as God-Emperor Flame, an ancient spirit at the heart of the Main God Hall responsible for maintaining peace across countless realms. He remembers being a Golden Dragon carved beneath the emperor’s seat: the emperor’s repeated attention awakened his awareness, and he eventually became the emperor’s cherished pet. In that existence, he lacked a physical body, could fly freely, and feared neither fire nor water 365.

Wanting to help the emperor obtain a human form, Shen became a Main God Hall administrator. He arranged contracts through which beings in other worlds completed missions and collected rare materials. A major crisis interrupted that work, forcing him to enter small worlds personally to repair Bugs. Ruthis was assigned as his fellow repairer, but an unknown force attacked Shen in the final two worlds, stole most of his memories, and replaced his accompanying system 365.

Remembered Life Outside the Book

Shen initially believes he died after reading the political-intrigue novel Century of Prosperity and transmigrated into a character bearing his name. Later memories show Chu Xuanzhen had already been part of his outside-world life from childhood through college. He also remembers collapsing while reading and realizes that his adult self felt incomplete because his memories and powers had been sealed 1 365.

Appearance

  • Human appearance: A slender young man with fair, delicate skin, exquisite features, and round, almond-shaped eyes. His long hair can fall onto his knees when unbound 18 30 225.
  • Scholarly presentation: His wide-sleeved blue silk official robes give him an elegant, scholarly air 237.
  • Dragon features: Golden horns, golden eyes, and a pale golden radiance remain visible in several adult appearances 179 183 184.
  • Full dragon form: A great Golden Dragon with luminous scales, capable of circling above the capital 196.
  • Merfolk form: Silvery-white hair, pale blue eyes, and a silver fish tail 262 279.
  • Ceremonial dress: Wears elaborate white-and-gold robes for the Prayer Sacrifice and scarlet clothing resembling a bridegroom’s attire for Chu’s accession and their wedding 344 363 369.
  • Public reputation: His beauty attracts court gossip, romantic speculation, and immediate fascination even from people who do not recognize him 33 47 251.

Personality

Shen’s courteous public behavior conceals a sarcastic, foul-mouthed inner voice. He flatters powerful people when necessary while privately insulting them, and readily performs fear, innocence, or confusion to mislead others. Although the system requires him to preserve the original owner’s persona, he is genuinely impulsive and confrontational rather than naturally composed 4 17 84 118.

He strongly resists being controlled. His repeated escapes target both royal surveillance and the system’s restrictions, while his refusal to seek Shen Zhi’s help reflects his determination to remain independent of an abusive household. He is equally willing to assert household hierarchy or retaliate physically when he feels disrespected 17 33 250 252.

His protectiveness increasingly extends beyond personal survival. He defends Madam Shen, rescues Liang Yu, comforts a grieving apprentice, and takes responsibility for frightened civilians during military crises. By the later arcs, he consciously suppresses his own fear because others depend on him for courage 18 100 120 307.

His attachment to Chu develops slowly through denial, attraction, and fear of separation. Once he accepts his love, he increasingly treats Chu as a real person rather than a fictional male lead and resolves to share his burdens. Nevertheless, affection does not erase his resentment of confinement, possessiveness, or deception 96 153 164 239 371.

Abilities & Skills

System Access and Restrictions

System 615 supplies guidance, temporary powers, disguises, and transformation options, but its information and permissions are unreliable.

  • Death mission: His initial route home requires a story-compatible death; deliberately engineering his death risks punishment, including electric shocks 1 4.
  • Persona enforcement: Breaking the original character’s persona can trigger compulsory punishments 84 207.
  • Existence rationalization: Helps him join and leave groups without attracting suspicion, but does not prevent recognition during a direct portrait inspection 252.
  • Limited disguise: Concealing his horns and altered eyes lasts at most two hours and is available only twice daily 116.
  • Revocable rewards: The Virus System blocks an earned dragon transformation by alleging a contract violation; System 615 insists he has broken no terms 307.
  • Incomplete knowledge: Database glitches, missing memories, surveillance, and apparent memory-blurring repeatedly undermine the system’s reliability 96 180 194 277.

  • Touch starvation / skin hunger: Physical contact with Chu, including holding hands, eases his symptoms 55 56 78.
  • Poor navigation: Can lose his way during an ordinary stroll; even a map may not help him reliably 160 179.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Coffin Awakening and Court Appointment

Shen awakens at his own funeral and frightens the mourners by forcing his way out of a sealed coffin. System 615 binds him to a death-seeking mission, while he learns that the original body died after offending the crown prince and enduring Shen Zhi’s punishment. At a palace banquet, the emperor approves Chu’s appointment of Shen as his private chronicler. Chu repeatedly threatens punishment or places him in danger, but frustratingly refuses to deliver the death Shen expects 1 4 6 7.

Separation from the Shen Household

After investigating a nighttime attack involving armed maids and incense, Shen confronts the household’s favoritism. He announces his intention to leave with Madam Shen, demands removal from the family register, and buys an independent home. The separation does not end the conflict: Shen household members later invade his home, accuse him of stealing land deeds, and attack him. He subsequently supports Madam Shen’s effort to recover her dowry and businesses 16 17 18 33 55 56.

Transformation Punishments and Growing Attachment

A fifteen-day cat punishment leaves Shen dependent first on Xue Pingyuan and then on Chu. Chu’s treatment mixes teasing and control with conspicuous care, including tending Shen’s scalded back while ignoring his own injury. Later punishments continue to expose Shen’s identity and vulnerability. His growing attraction becomes explicit in private conversations with System 615, and he delays his departure because he has fallen for Chu 35 41 96 107.

Lingnan Resistance and the Seventh Prince’s Exposure

Forced to accompany Chu to Lingnan, Shen encounters plague, official abuse, and Lu Guangchen’s corruption. He helps organize the townspeople’s resistance, infiltrates Lu’s estate, rescues Liang Yu, and burns the residence during their escape. Back in court, he supplies letters implicating the Seventh Prince and suggests verifying their handwriting. His contribution earns no reward because it is treated as atonement for his disgraced family 60 99 100 106 107.

Divine Identity, Captivity, and the Capital’s Defense

Shen’s dragon horns are exposed during a palace assassination attempt, turning him into a target of pursuit and religious speculation. During later separation from Chu, he openly acknowledges his love and urgently searches for him. Ruthis captures him and attempts to claim him as the Western Regions’ Divine Dragon, but Shen attacks Ruthis during Great Chu’s rescue operation and reunites with Chu 118 119 164 179 181 184.

Their return to the capital ends in imprisonment. Shen withstands Jia’s sword while temporarily empowered and refuses Chu Tianyin’s attempt to secure his allegiance. After abduction and a serious sword wound, he recovers sufficiently to reach the city wall during an invasion. His mental exhortation and Golden Dragon transformation restore morale, and he fights alongside Chu as reinforcements arrive 187 188 190 192 194 196 197.

Northern States and the Island Conflict

Shen leaves the capital with System 615, evading surveillance through disguises and existence rationalization. A merfolk punishment complicates his travels, while discoveries on the islands expose collusion involving local rulers and foreign forces. During the ensuing battle, he rallies civilians and fights alongside Chu. When the Virus System blocks his planned dragon transformation, he improvises and emerges from the sea supported by an orca. He later discovers seawater control, extinguishes fires, and wounds Ruthis 252 262 283 307 315.

Prayer Sacrifice and Succession

An aging punishment coincides with unexplained contact with a revered land and the discovery that Shen can hear plants. He recovers his ordinary appearance before participating in the Divine Dragon procession and Prayer Sacrifice. Captured during the confrontation surrounding the ritual, he exposes Chu Tianyin’s lack of royal blood and turns against Chu Xuanzhi when control of his injured hand returns 334 342 343 344 348.

When ministers attempt to use him to influence Chu, Shen instead supports Chu’s judgment while asking that marriage and a harem wait. He privately promises to remain beside him, and Chu accepts the throne. Shen then recovers memories of his divine identity, his work repairing worlds, and his longstanding connection to the emperor 363 365.

Marriage and Epilogue

Chu follows formal matchmaking and betrothal rites to marry Shen, who protests being “married off” rather than doing the marrying. They complete the Empress’s investiture and take their seats together on the dragon throne. Shen thereafter holds both Empress and Grand Historian, argues with Chu at court, and unsuccessfully requests permission to travel south to expand education 369.

After the Great Emperor regains his memories, Shen refuses to accept his claim that sharing Chu’s body makes him equivalent to the Chu he married. Their recovered history leaves Shen particularly unwilling to overlook further manipulation 371.
