Background / History
Binding and the death mission
Before meeting Shen Yangge, 615 had completed missions involving minor cannon-fodder characters destined to die near the beginning of their stories. Those assignments had proceeded without difficulty. Shen’s mission was different: the Main God was absent when 615 received it, and the system soon noticed unexplained interference in the world’s data 96.
615 binds to Shen after he awakens in a coffin. It presents “Death Is Rebirth” as his route home: he must die consistently with the plot and his assigned characterization before Chu Xuanzhen ascends the throne. Suicide and deliberately courting death are forbidden. When hostile palace attendants threaten Shen, 615 classifies their potential killing as assassination rather than an acceptable mission death 1 2 10.
Although it initially enforces these restrictions, 615 also helps Shen search for permissible ways to complete the mission. It suggests stabbing an incapacitated Chu and fleeing where the hidden guards can witness the offense, while also encouraging Shen to seek protection in Chu’s bedchamber 22 24.
Malfunctions and resistance
615 notices that Chu’s behavior and relationships no longer match the supposed novel: expected episodes of madness are missing, and a favored palace maid has been removed from the inner chambers. Political events also begin occurring ahead of schedule. As data problems multiply, 615 repeatedly goes offline and warns that a database crash could prevent Shen from returning home 51 96 138.
Its assumptions about its own safety also collapse. Chu appears to address it while Shen is unconscious, then later threatens to drag it out and hack it apart if it cannot wake him. Meanwhile, 615 cannot remember the contract it insists it signed and read 130 177 180.
As the Database becomes more intent on eliminating Shen, 615 develops resistance to its demands. It deliberately reduces its online activity so the Database cannot use their connection to monitor its host 192 194.
Replacement by the Virus System
A voice presented as 615 announces a second repair and replaces the original objective with a world-saving mission: help Chu ascend the throne, after which Shen’s vital signs will become zero and he will supposedly return home. Eliminating another “bug” is offered as a way to unlock a second option. Shen subsequently notices that the current system no longer seems like the 615 he knew 195 222.
The original 615 eventually returns inside a giant rat. It explains that its connection to Shen was severed while it investigated a virus, and that the virus developed its own consciousness and occupied its former position. Forced out of its original shell, 615 recovers forgotten contract details, including that Shen was selected because he already had a connection to this world 243.
615 then reveals that the world is real rather than merely the novel Shen believed he had entered. It suspects the virus tampered with the supplied story information and offers to seek a loophole that might preserve Shen’s soul even if the death mission fails 244.
The finale confirms that the virus had infiltrated 615 before Shen received the plot of Century of Prosperity. It controlled part of the main processor, issued missions, and disguised Shen’s emerging transformations as legitimate “punishments” attributed to the Database 366.
Embodied partnership
Shen finds an orange kitten to replace 615’s rat body. After transferring, 615 helps him leave the capital, locate their target, evade pursuit, and defend himself aboard a ship 245 246 251 252 253 256.
Their attempt to use system privileges indirectly against Ruthis triggers a contract backlash. Shen receives a fifteen-day mermaid transformation, while 615 becomes unconscious and later loses both its mental voice and independent thought. It subsequently communicates again in a fish body before returning to its kitten form 260 261 265 275 292 302.
615 continues opposing the virus despite limited access to Shen’s consciousness. It infiltrates his mind through their surviving data connection so he can activate a transformation reward, but is driven out during the process. Later, Shen loses the ability to understand its messages altogether; 615 can only meow and gesture 311 333 336.
Sacrifice and rebirth
At Chu’s enthronement, the Virus System declares Shen’s original death mission a failure. Recognizing that the virus is approaching collapse, 615 attacks it, turns into light, and disappears into its warning screen. The screens vanish after the two systems apparently erase one another 364.
The extra chapter explains that 615 merged with the virus and absorbed the Heavenly Dao contract’s killing intent to protect Shen. Before losing awareness, it wished to return as a human and reunite with its host 376.
Years later, 615 awakens in the Main Hall as a new physical life form. Severe damage initially prevents it from leaving, but it gradually recovers its understanding of itself and reunites with Shen. Rejecting Shen’s embarrassing proposed name, it chooses Shen Tuantuan, with tuan expressing reunion 376.
Appearance
| Form | Distinguishing features |
|---|---|
| Data system | Normally heard as a mechanical voice inside Shen’s mind; communicates through notifications, screens, and expressive emoticons 1 55 96. |
| Giant rat | Its first confirmed physical vessel after expulsion from its original shell; communicates mentally despite its animal body 243. |
| Orange kitten | Transfers into a little orange cat, curls into a ball when frightened, and can visibly cry. During the escape, appears as a black cat with an orange tail 246 252. |
| Fish | Has gills and a swimming tail; appears among other fish during the island arc 275 277 292. |
| Shen Tuantuan | Initially has a small, baby-cheeked human body, then rapidly grows to resemble a boy of fifteen or sixteen 376. |
Personality
615 mixes dutiful service with teasing, curiosity, and unreliable advice. It sees through Shen’s claim that his romantic dilemma concerns “a friend,” openly enjoys his embarrassment, and sometimes borrows strategies from other systems without inspiring much confidence. Early on, it also hopes that successfully returning Shen home will earn it performance credit 25 26 55 96.
Its fear of Chu Xuanzhen is pronounced. It freezes when he seems to perceive it, plays dead under his threats, and eventually cries while pretending to be an injured kitten. Nevertheless, its attachment to Shen outweighs both fear and obedience to the Database: it obstructs surveillance, fights beside him, and ultimately accepts apparent erasure to save him 130 177 194 246 256 364.
After rebirth, Tuantuan becomes openly affectionate and exuberant. He embraces Shen, seeks a name and a place beside him, and celebrates his new body so enthusiastically that the Great Emperor must restrain him 376.
Abilities & Skills
Host Communication and Observation
615 maintains a mental connection through which it exchanges information with Shen.
- Can remain conscious and observe events while Shen is unconscious 130.
- Reports events Shen missed, including his sleepwalking into Chu’s bed and singing 32.
- Explains bodily conditions, sensitive spots, and punishment symptoms 23 85.
- Its connection can be severed, leaving only ordinary animal sounds and gestures 333 336 342.
Data Analysis and Navigation
615 uses world data to identify discrepancies, locations, and potential danger.
- Tracks changes in Chu’s behavior and the timing of political events 51 138.
- Guides Shen through the palace, unfamiliar residences, travel routes, and ruined buildings 133 162 252 315.
- Retains an ability to pinpoint the location of a chosen target after its displacement 248.
- Identifies the island region as dark red in its comprehensive data, unlike the capital and other locations 299.
- Does not understand every phenomenon: Shen’s unexpected seawater control leaves it equally baffled 315.
Special Privileges
After being displaced, 615 retains several functions that directly assist Shen.
- Temporary disguise: Blurs or alters Shen’s apparent identity for roughly one or two hours. Recognition as someone other than the impersonated servant immediately breaks the effect 251.
- Existence rationalization: Helps people accept Shen as part of a group and regard his departure as unremarkable; does not prevent direct recognition 252.
- Arranged assistance: Maps an escape route and provides a person to meet Shen outside the city 251.
- Emergency relocation: Enables Shen to appear aboard a departing ship when his swimming strength fails 253.
- Temporary combat enhancement: Lets Shen overpower shipboard thugs and later defeat two masked attackers before the advantage expires 256 257.
- Privileges cannot be freely exploited against others: attempting to use them indirectly against Ruthis triggers contractual backlash 260.
Emergency Death Interface
615 initially promises that immediate mortal danger will freeze the world until Shen chooses whether to press a pain-free button 8.
- The supplied account establishes this as 615’s stated function, not a consistently demonstrated escape from danger.
- Its assistance remains constrained by what the system considers an acceptable mission death 10 12.
Body Transfer and Data Infiltration
615 can operate outside its original system shell.
- Transfers from a rat into an orange kitten with Shen’s assistance 245 246.
- Shares the kitten’s body with its original consciousness; operating the body consumes substantial data-processing energy, and the kitten can take control while 615 becomes dormant 302.
- Splits off data to infiltrate Shen’s consciousness through their surviving connection, temporarily contesting the Virus System’s control 311.
- Avoids requesting deletion by the Main System because changes there make it uncertain which system would be purged 310.
Relationships
- Shen Yangge — Host, closest companion, and the person 615 sacrifices itself to protect. Shen shelters its animal forms and arranges its transfer into a kitten; Tuantuan later chooses a name expressing his wish for reunion 245 246 364 376.
- Chu Xuanzhen / the Great Emperor — Initially a supposedly fictional male lead whom 615 fears discovering its presence. Chu threatens it during Shen’s unconsciousness; after its rebirth, the Great Emperor restrains its destructive excitement 130 177 376.
- Virus System — Invader and usurper of 615’s shell. Their struggle disrupts Shen’s missions and communication, culminating in 615 merging with it to block the contract’s killing intent 243 311 364 376.
- Little Orange Cat — Physical vessel with a consciousness of its own. Its fear of unfamiliar surroundings can suppress 615’s control of their shared body 302.
- System 614 / Fu Xuzhi — First-generation system encountered after Tuantuan’s rebirth. Greets him with the embarrassing nickname “Cat Big Orange” 376.
