Background / History
Teng is the son of Jian Zhang and Min, and Jian Ruonan’s younger brother. A precocious student, he began his education at three, composed poetry at four, and wrote essays at five. His father placed great hopes in him and was reluctant to punish him while his studies went well 33 437.
His academic talent did not prevent serious mischief. He stole the Old Madam’s jade ornaments, exchanged them for money, and bought a swift horse. When questioned, he argued that his mother’s possessions belonged to his own family, whereas the Old Madam’s could be taken from an “outsider” 33.
Ruonan’s return disrupted his position as the family’s pampered youngest child. The side story Teng at Six recounts how his jealousy became admiration: after Ruonan outmaneuvered him and demonstrated how his reputation for lying could discredit a truthful complaint, he declared himself her loyal servant 437.
Appearance
- At six: A soft, chubby child with plump cheeks, large dark eyes, and long eyelashes. His innocent head tilts and tearful expressions are particularly effective at winning sympathy 33 34 204.
- Manner: Can present himself as a respectful miniature scholar, with upright posture and carefully measured greetings 33 34.
- At twelve: Nearly as tall as Ruonan, with a slender, porcelain-white face and graceful aristocratic bearing. His voice has not yet broken, and he has neither a broadened frame nor facial hair 393.
Personality
Teng combines genuine intelligence with calculated charm. He acts cute, wounded, or dutiful according to what will best persuade his audience. He can turn an apparent concern for his sister into an argument for his own privileges, and often accompanies requests with tea, snacks, or shoulder massages 34 60 261.
His enthusiasm for gossip is tempered by self-preservation. Hearing that the treasure expedition could involve rebellion and internal bloodshed makes him abruptly prioritize his studies. Later, confidence in Ruonan’s protection persuades him that accompanying her army will be closer to a spring outing than a dangerous campaign 188 261.
Despite his opportunism, Teng becomes deeply attached to Ruonan. He treasures her imperfect calligraphy, publicly celebrates her achievements, and willingly accepts blame on her behalf. His possessiveness also surfaces when the Ninth Prince’s affection makes him fear losing his place in her favor 184 334 423.
Abilities & Skills
Hearing Jian Ruonan’s Thoughts
Teng can hear Ruonan’s unspoken thoughts, giving him access to her gossip and exposing his own schemes to her scrutiny 33 34.
- He recognizes that her inner voice can uncover his past misdeeds and hidden motives 34.
- He cannot openly explain the phenomenon; attempts to discuss the secret are restricted 33.
- Covering Ruonan’s mouth cannot stop the revelations, which alarms him during their imperial audience 61.
- Hou temporarily removes him from the Scavenger Group before his performance in front of Gao Shou 326.
Academic Talent
Teng is exceptionally advanced for his age, though he finds conventional essay lessons tedious 33.
- Memorizes an examination essay before a stick of incense finishes burning 34.
- Writes sufficiently well that Ruonan acknowledges the quality of his handwriting at six 437.
- Understands Ruonan’s holiday-reform memorial despite its simplified and incorrectly written characters 184.
- Knows common weather indicators and forecasting sayings later compared with the Imperial Astronomical Bureau’s methods 428.
- Uses repeated bathroom breaks or feigned illness to escape lessons he dislikes 33.
Acting and Persuasion
Teng’s strongest social tools are flattery, emotional performance, and an ability to identify what others want 34 261 266.
- Uses tearful claims of being less loved to unsettle Min 34.
- Pretends to collapse and convulse during a prank on Ruonan 34 35.
- Persuades Ruonan to take him on campaign by combining exaggerated concern with attentive service 261.
- Convincingly plays a frightened child to mislead Gao Shou about the group’s knife-throwing test 326.
- His methods lose effectiveness when relatives recognize the performance or remember his earlier lies 138 437.
Disguise
At twelve, Teng successfully passes as a young girl after Ruonan and Chen Pozi dress and style him 393.
- Pei Shaoyi initially accepts him as a well-mannered girl and invites him to compose poetry 393.
- He maintains the act with a higher-pitched voice and an explanation that poor health keeps him at home 397.
- Min eventually recognizes him and immediately demands to know why he has not gone to school 397.
Equipment / Items
- Swift horse — Purchased with money obtained by selling the Old Madam’s stolen jade 33.
- Ruonan’s calligraphy sheets — Keeps both “misery” and its replacement, “auspicious,” calling the first precious despite Min’s wish to destroy it 184.
- Soap gift — Buys Ruonan a difficult-to-obtain bar for three taels, only to discover that her courtyard’s shampoo impresses him far more 185 186.
- Jade ornament — Receives it from Dantai Mo while assessing the prince as a possible husband for Ruonan; later insists one piece of jade cannot buy his loyalty permanently 258 326.
- Girl’s disguise — A light gauze top, pale-green horse-face skirt, twin buns, hairpins, and rouge 393.
Relationships
- Jian Ruonan — Elder sister, protector, disciplinarian, and model for strategic mischief. Their early rivalry develops into an affectionate partnership, with Teng routinely serving as her helper and enthusiastic supporter 35 437 423.
- Min — Mother. Fond of him but strict about education; she recognizes many of his manipulative performances and supports punishment when he goes too far 33 35 138 397.
- Jian Zhang — Father. Values Teng’s scholarly promise, but his son’s history of deception makes him distrust later complaints. Hires a tutor after Teng misses lessons on campaign 33 286 437.
- Jian Xilu — Elder sister. Supports correcting his behavior, teases his fear of danger, and shares gossip-watching excursions with him 35 188 326.
- Jian Huayuan — Elder brother. Teng seeks Ruonan’s help when Huayuan is abducted and reminds her that he still needs to be untied after the immediate danger passes 418 423.
- Dantai Mo / Prince Rui — An admired prince and prospective brother-in-law whom Teng alternately praises and evaluates. Dantai helps him watch a scandal by lifting him onto his wheelchair’s armrest 38 176 258 302.
- Wang Defa — Friend and fellow accomplice, addressed as “Brother Fa.” They prank Luo Shuirong together, and Teng relays Ruonan’s instructions concerning the intruders 138 261 327.
- Princess Funing and the Ninth Prince — Funing takes Teng’s side when he becomes jealous of the Ninth Prince’s closeness to Ruonan 334.
- Xuan Xiaowu — Calls Teng “Little Uncle” while falsely presenting himself as Ruonan and Dantai Mo’s future son. Teng readily explains the supposed time-travel story 349 352.
