Ch. 161Better to kill the wrong man
Key events
- Naruto, disguised in a fox mask and black robes, uses a Wood Clone to restrain Root agents Aburame Torune and Yamanaka Fū.
- Fū recognizes the Wood Release as belonging to Kinoe—now Tenzo—and suspects the Third Hokage may be behind a plot against Danzō. Naruto seals both agents’ cursed speech marks and memories, but spares them, especially because Torune is close to Naruto’s friend Shino.
- Naruto imitates Fū’s voice at Danzō’s door, claiming that Kinoe has been captured and that the Third Hokage sent him.
- Danzō, suspicious and unwilling to risk a witness, attacks through the door with a Wind Blade. Naruto blocks it with an Ice Release sword and forces the door open.
- Danzō sees Naruto and recognizes that the intruder has witnessed the Sharingan implanted in his right arm. He resolves to kill him.
- Naruto suddenly appears beside Danzō and drives chakra-coated fingers into his exposed right eye. Danzō cries out in agony.
Character developments and interactions
- Naruto acts with calculated restraint toward Torune and Fū, protecting them rather than killing them. Against Danzō, however, he is swift and merciless, exploiting surprise and close range.
- Danzō reveals his paranoia and ruthlessness: he attacks without confirming who is outside and immediately decides to eliminate Naruto once his secret arm is exposed.
- Fū connects Kinoe’s Wood Release to Tenzo and interprets it as evidence of a possible leadership-level conspiracy.
- Naruto’s concern for Torune, because of Torune’s bond with Shino, shows that personal ties shape his choices even during the mission.
Significant themes
- Paranoia and betrayal: Danzō assumes danger everywhere and treats even a possible ally as expendable.
- Deception and misdirection: Naruto uses disguises, mimicry, false information, and concealed techniques to control the encounter.
- Restraint versus violence: Naruto spares the Root agents but attacks Danzō decisively.
- Secrets and political suspicion: The mere mention of the Third Hokage and the discovery of Danzō’s Sharingan arm suggest deeper conflict within Konoha.
