Background / History

Life in Konoha

Mito is Hashirama Senju’s wife and one of Konoha’s first-generation powerhouses. In her old age, she lives in the Senju compound and remains involved in caring for her grandchildren 49 195.

When Tsunade collapses drunk in a corridor, Mito cannot lift her and fetches Nawaki. She checks his injuries after Tsunade accidentally kicks him, then ensures Tsunade is put to bed. Afterward, she offers to help Katsuyu with a task that had originally required Tsunade 49.

Summoning Yui and Shobue

Katsuyu asks Mito to supply enough chakra to summon two people from Shikkotsu Forest. Mito agrees after learning that one is a Konoha ninja, but the scale of the technique forces her to draw on the Nine-Tails. During the extraction, the beast reminds her that her life is nearing its end and suggests that her death may allow him to escape 50.

Mito activates Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, but the summoning consumes its chakra and nearly exhausts her own reserves. It brings Yui Hyuga and Shobue to Konoha. Mito welcomes them and subsequently brings Hiruzen Sarutobi to meet Shobue as an honored visitor from Shikkotsu Forest 51 52 54.

Choosing a Successor

Mito announces that she will travel to the Land of Whirlpools to personally select the next Nine-Tails jinchūriki. Despite concerns about her health, she insists on going; Tsunade accompanies her, and Hiruzen assigns Root to protect them 131 132.

In Uzushiogakure, Mito finds the Uzumaki threatened by Kumogakure, Kirigakure, and Sunagakure. She sends an ANBU messenger to Konoha for aid and works with the clan leadership to buy time and preserve the clan 172.

She selects Kushina Uzumaki, a girl younger than eight, as her successor because of her exceptional chakra talent. Mito later reassures Kushina that her parents can be brought to Konoha if she wishes 176 193 195.

Teaching Yui and Nai

Mito suspects the identities of two pale-skinned Byakugan users who arrive with Uesugi Yuri. Tsunade’s arrival confirms that they are Yui and Nai Hyuga 173 174.

Yui trades the Wind Release: Wind-Riding Technique for Mito’s personal instruction in sealing jutsu. Within three days, Yui masters most of the available Uzumaki techniques. Mito also discovers that Xiao You can integrate those techniques and requests an exchange of insights, openly acknowledging flaws in her clan’s existing seals 175 177.

After Yui and Nai help repel a Kirigakure raid, Mito rewards Nai with a scroll of the Second Hokage’s Water Release techniques. She hopes Nai can adapt them into stronger Ice Release techniques 183 184.

The Evil God’s Cursed Seal

The Nine-Tails warns Mito about a terrifying consciousness attached to Yui and initially urges her to kill Yui. Mito refuses to act on an unverified threat and instead agrees to help contain it with sealing jutsu and Nine-Tails chakra 178.

Inspecting Yui’s curse mark causes Mito dizziness and almost immediate loss of her memory of its appearance. Recognizing the danger, she cooperates with Xiao You, allowing the summoning beast to lead the sealing while she supplies chakra 179 184.

When Mito opens a gap in her own seal to provide that chakra, the Nine-Tails exploits it to attack. She pulls the escaping chakra back with Adamantine Sealing Chains, then interrogates the beast. Afterward, she estimates that her deteriorating seal may last only two or three more months 185 186 187.

Dividing the Nine-Tails

Mito privately informs Konoha’s delegation that her seal will fail in roughly two months. She intends to teach Kushina her sealing techniques and prefers to perform the transfer after returning to Konoha, though she is prepared to do it locally if necessary 195 196.

Nai secretly seeks the Nine-Tails’ power. Mito confronts her about her intentions, then agrees to give her half the beast in exchange for helping protect the Land of Whirlpools. She refuses to surrender all of it because of her obligations to both Konoha and the Uzumaki, and places considerable faith in Yui’s ability to support the island’s defense 202 203.

During the transfer, the shrine’s sealing array fails and the half-powered Nine-Tails escapes. Tsunade and Mito attempt to restrain it, but Yui must intervene when it begins forming a body and attacks them. Yui forces its chakra into Nai, and Mito closes the seal with the Four Symbols Seal, completing Nai’s installation as its host 223 225 226.

Defense and Departure Plans

Mito tries to stop Yui’s confrontation with Danzo because casualties could jeopardize the Land of Whirlpools. When Yui attempts to finish the badly injured Danzo, Mito uses Nine-Tails chakra to block her, with Orochimaru also intervening 213 215.

News that the Third Raikage has entered the conflict alarms Mito. She decides to warn Hiruzen, recognizing that knowledge of the Nine-Tails’ presence could make the danger extend beyond the island 235.

When Yui reports Kumogakure’s withdrawal, Mito is relieved but orders an independent verification. With the immediate threat reduced, she plans to return to Konoha and accepts Yui’s proposal to leave Lao Ren and Jiaoya behind as guards who can contact Yui if further danger arises 250 259.
