Background / History
Meeting Yui in Shikkotsu Forest
Yui encounters Katsuyu after an uncontracted Summoning Technique carries her through spatial turbulence into Shikkotsu Forest. Initially mistaking Katsuyu’s enormous body for a white mountain range, Yui recognizes her on approaching. Katsuyu accepts Yui’s explanation that she learned about her from an ancient scroll and becomes friendlier after recognizing her as a Konoha ninja 35.
Katsuyu warns that spatial turbulence can trap travelers for thousands of years. From Yui’s departure date, she estimates that one year has passed outside the rift. She identifies Yui as only the second human to reach Shikkotsu Forest in a thousand years, but angrily refuses to discuss the earlier visitor 35.
Eager to train a human senjutsu user after the Mount Myōboku toads’ boasting, Katsuyu offers Yui instruction. Yui prioritizes finding her missing friend in Konoha, agreeing to return for training afterward. Katsuyu explains that a summoning contract will allow her to arrange Yui’s return, although they must wait until her clone is summoned to Konoha 35 36.
Katsuyu heals Yui’s wounds and carries her into the forest’s interior. Her main body later meets Yui in a human transformation, welcomes Xiao You as a companion, and presents the Slug Summoning Contract. Yui signs her name in blood after Tsunade’s entry 36 37 38.
Attempting to Remove the Caged Bird Seal
When Yui proposes removing her Caged Bird Seal, Katsuyu recommends learning Shikkotsu Forest senjutsu first as a safer alternative. Yui rejects the years-long delay and instead plans to enter suspended animation, tricking the seal into recognizing her death 38 39.
Katsuyu initially refuses to participate. Concern that Yui will attempt the procedure alone ultimately persuades her to help, with a fifteen-second limit. Examining Yui’s eyes, she finds the seal intertwined with her brain and optic nerves and warns that preserving the Byakugan will be difficult 39.
After testing Acid Mist Healing as a revival method, Katsuyu monitors Yui’s deathlike state and protects her eyes. When the forehead seal begins fading, the seals attached to the eyes attempt to destroy the Byakugan. Katsuyu increases her healing output until it outpaces the damage 40 47.
The seal disappears temporarily but reforms after the procedure. Its new form is substantially weaker, though Yui’s Byakugan blind spot remains. Katsuyu believes it may no longer be able to damage Yui’s eyes, but firmly refuses another attempt because repeated suspended animation could kill her. Before Yui’s departure, she gives her a mysterious black scroll to read only when alone 48.
Arranging the Return to Konoha
Summoned by Tsunade in the Land of Grass, Katsuyu helps treat Orochimaru’s wounds and asks for a favor afterward. Once Tsunade returns to Konoha, Katsuyu requests chakra to bring Yui back from Shikkotsu Forest. Tsunade recognizes Yui as a former Academy classmate and agrees 45 47.
Tsunade later becomes too drunk to help. After ensuring she is safely in bed, Katsuyu accepts Mito Uzumaki’s offer of assistance. She asks Mito to supply chakra for summoning two individuals from Shikkotsu Forest, describing one as her friend and the other as a Konoha ninja 49 50.
Katsuyu estimates that the procedure may require as much chakra as summoning her main body. Her evasive explanation makes Mito suspect she is withholding something, but Mito agrees and prepares to draw on the Nine-Tails’ chakra. The summoning’s outcome is not shown in the provided chapters 50.
Appearance
- Slug form: White body marked with blue patterns; the enormous form Yui first encounters resembles a smooth mountain range 35.
- Main-body scale: Katsuyu states that her true main body is approximately five times larger than that mountain-sized form 36.
- Surface texture: Despite Yui’s expectations, the clone carrying her has a smooth, soft head rather than a sticky one 36.
- Human transformation: A tall, slender woman wearing an elaborate flower wreath and a magnificent pale blue-green kimono, with a huge green scroll strapped to her back 37.
- Voice: Gentle and distinctly female, softening further when she recognizes Yui’s connection to Konoha 35.
Personality
Katsuyu is welcoming, compassionate, and protective. She heals Yui before their contract is signed, condemns the Hyuga Clan’s treatment of its Branch Family, and continues helping despite frustration with Yui’s dangerous decisions. Her refusal to repeat the seal-removal procedure places Yui’s survival above the possibility of a complete cure 36 39 48.
She also has a playful and competitive side. She teases Xiao You by revealing her slug form and becomes eager to recruit Yui after the toads boast about their own Sage Mode student. Although addressed as the Slug Sage, she dismisses the importance of titles and prefers that Xiao You simply call her Katsuyu 35 37.
Her clones address partners respectfully as “Lady Yui” and “Lady Tsunade.” With Yui, she is unusually talkative; with Mito, she is deferential but evasive about the full demands of her planned summoning 36 45 50.
Abilities & Skills
Healing and Medical Assessment
Katsuyu uses healing chakra both to treat injuries and to examine the body 36 39.
- Heals Yui’s remaining wounds while carrying her through Shikkotsu Forest 36.
- Determines Yui’s bone age and estimates that her chakra reserves are three or four times those of most people her age 36.
- Examines the Caged Bird Seal’s connection to Yui’s brain and optic nerves 39.
- Protects the Byakugan by healing faster than the seal can destroy its structure; this weakens rather than permanently removes the seal 47 48.
- Assists Tsunade in treating Orochimaru by attaching small bodies to his wounds 45.
Acid Mist Healing
Acid Mist Healing is a senjutsu technique that stimulates cellular activity. Unlike Katsuyu’s gentler healing methods, its stimulation causes intense stinging and numbness 40.
- Yui confirms that its stimulation can serve as the means to wake her from suspended animation 40.
- Katsuyu explains that Yui could potentially learn it after mastering sage chakra 40.
- Katsuyu cannot use Lightning Release, prompting her to test this technique as an alternative 40.
Body Division
Katsuyu can split smaller slug bodies from her larger forms 35 45.
- Separates a body small enough to converse with Yui while she hovers nearby 35.
- Divides into tiny bodies to cover Orochimaru’s wounds during treatment 45.
- Maintains a clone outside Shikkotsu Forest whose presence in Konoha is necessary for her proposed reverse-summoning route 36.
Transformation Technique
Katsuyu learned the Transformation Technique from ninja and uses it to meet Yui in human form 37.
- Can selectively reveal her underlying form, turning an arm white and enlarged before separating a small slug from it 37.
Senjutsu Instruction
Katsuyu offers to teach the senjutsu of Shikkotsu Forest 35 36.
- Describes its method as gentler than those of Mount Myōboku and Ryūchi Cave and states that learners will not be assimilated 38.
- Estimates training at two or three years for a talented learner, seven or eight years for a less talented one, or potentially more than a decade 38.
- Proposes Shikkotsu Forest’s Sage Mode as a safer means of undoing Yui’s Caged Bird Seal 38.
Summoning and Reverse Summoning
Katsuyu’s contracts allow her to cooperate with human summoners and arrange transport between Shikkotsu Forest and Konoha 36 38 47.
- Confirms that Yui can contract with her despite already having another summoning partner 36.
- Requires only a name written in blood to sign her summoning scroll 38.
- Needs outside chakra when her summoned body lacks enough power to perform the transport 47 50.
Corrosive Secretions and Limitations
- The corrosive liquid in Shikkotsu Forest’s outer swamps is Katsuyu’s spit, placed there to keep the neighboring toads away. She admits she cannot beat them 35.
- Tsunade considers Katsuyu unsuitable for reconnaissance because she moves slowly; Jiraiya emphasizes her value as a healer instead 41.
Equipment / Items
- Slug Summoning Contract scroll — A huge green scroll carried on her back in human form. It contains the names of Tsunade, Hashirama Senju, and earlier deceased summoners; Yui adds her name after Tsunade’s 37 38.
- Black scroll — A mysterious gift Katsuyu gives Yui, insisting that she keep it and read it only when alone. Its contents are not revealed in the provided context 48.
Relationships
- Yui Hyuga — Summoning partner and prospective senjutsu student. Katsuyu admires her resolve, helps weaken her Caged Bird Seal, and arranges her return to Konoha while resisting further life-threatening experiments 35 36 38 48.
- Tsunade — Summoning partner and fellow healer. Katsuyu assists her treatment of Orochimaru, cares for her when drunk, and requests her chakra to retrieve Yui 45 47 49.
- Xiao You — Welcomed as a companion. Katsuyu playfully reveals her slug form and asks Xiao You to address her by name rather than title 37.
- Hashirama Senju — Previous summoner whose name appears on Katsuyu’s contract scroll. Katsuyu states that all summoners preceding Tsunade have died 37.
- Mito Uzumaki — Respected helper who agrees to supply chakra for Katsuyu’s planned summoning 49 50.
- Orochimaru — Patient treated jointly by Katsuyu and Tsunade after the Land of Grass mission 45.
- Nawaki — Katsuyu offers to heal his facial injury after Tsunade kicks him; he declines 49.
- Mount Myōboku’s toads — Rivals whose boasting motivates her search for a senjutsu student. She uses the forest’s corrosive outer swamps to keep them away 35.
