Background / History

Kazama identifies Takamagahara as his homeland, but says its whereabouts cannot be spoken of. He no longer remembers how long he has been imprisoned. His recollections describe an upbringing in which Otsutsuki children began intensive taijutsu training at three years old, competing to strengthen their bodies 310 354.

According to Big Bear’s account, Kazama’s physical body and soul consciousness were separated when he entered the sealing space. Kazama asked the young bear to help locate his body through invisibility. Their apparent friendship ended when Kazama stole the bodies of Big Bear’s deceased parents; Big Bear later concludes that he wanted to exploit their invisibility ability 342 364.

Kazama was sealed by an unnamed man. After escaping, he recognizes that recovering his abandoned Tower would require defeating that same person. The Tower had accompanied him for thousands of years 359.

Appearance

Kazama first appears as a translucent, floating soul. His restored body has the pale skin, horns, and white eyes that allow Yui to identify him as an Otsutsuki 302 350 364.

  • Soul form: Emits white or silvery light, particularly when moving rapidly 304 349.
  • Physical-contact coating: Covers his hand with pitch-black material resembling a glove 302.
  • Restored body: Pure-white skin and two horns extending from the back of his head, following its contours toward his forehead 350.
  • Eyes: Pure-white Byakugan irises with faint threads of color 350.
  • Resemblance to Yui: Nai and Orochimaru notice similarities between his restored appearance and Yui’s 353.

Personality

Kazama is mischievous, boastful, and easily irritated when denied attention. He demands that Yui beg for explanations, frightens Xiao You for amusement, and repeatedly trades insults with Big Bear. His boredom with confinement helps draw him back toward Yui even before he notices her Gourd 302 304 316 318.

His apparent helpfulness is frequently calculated. He conceals his knowledge of the Ruin, interrupts conversations that might expose his plans, and uses Yui’s search for Nai to direct her movements. Although he sometimes apologizes or shows anxiety, he ultimately sacrifices Yui to free himself 304 308 348 350.

After regaining a body, his arrogance becomes openly cruel. He calls humans inferior, compares Nai’s resistance to an ant challenging a god, and deliberately claims to have killed Yui to provoke her. Nevertheless, he prioritizes survival when faced with Red Ants capable of draining him or the possibility of encountering a dangerous fellow clansman 354 355 356 359.

Abilities & Skills

Soul Form and Movement

Kazama remains active without a physical body, communicating and moving through the air 302.

  • Uses a black coating on his hand to carry physical objects, including Nai’s scroll 302.
  • Moves as a streak of silvery-white light; Yui estimates his speed at many times the speed of sound and fears she could not react to an ambush 304.
  • Cannot freely cross the Ruin’s individual spaces in his original soul form. Entering another prisoner’s space normally results in being sent back 320.
  • Uses the Gourd to bypass those restrictions while accompanying Yui 304 320.

Illusion Clones

Kazama periodically creates clones that can cross spatial boundaries his original soul cannot. Big Bear attributes Kazama’s extensive knowledge of the Ruin to this ability 343.

  • Clones can assume other creatures’ appearances and imitate their presence 343.
  • Creates a Nai Hyuga impersonation to accompany Yui while he attempts to eliminate the apparent real Nai 322.
  • Big Bear reports that disguised clones he killed turned to dust a day later 343.
  • The method is not established as conventional ninjutsu; Big Bear believes it is something else 346.
  • Kazama himself later mistakes the real Nai for his clone, exposing a failure in his understanding of events 353.

Perception and Byakugan

Kazama possesses unusually sensitive perception even while inside the Gourd, though he cannot see its surroundings from within 306 307.

  • Detects another person near Yui without direct sight 306.
  • Claims to sense Nai’s presence and helps identify their location within the Ruin 310.
  • Reacts quickly to Big Bear’s invisible attack 356.
  • Recognizes the principles of Nai’s Body Flicker Technique despite his Byakugan not being active 354.
  • Detects a major concentration of chakra several hundred kilometers away after reaching another planet 359.

Curse Transfer and Bodily Restoration

Kazama frees himself by transferring his curse to Yui, exploiting her bloodline. The process leaves her weak, in severe pain, and losing consciousness 350.

  • The purple Crystal glows and becomes clear when the transfer succeeds 350.
  • Enters the Crystal and uses Withered Tree black oil to construct a physical body 350.
  • Assumes Yui will die as the curse spreads toward her heart 350.
  • Yui’s rock casing and senjutsu reinforcements do not prevent the eventual transfer 348 350.

Physical Strength and Force Projection

His restored body overwhelmingly outmatches Nai, Orochimaru, and Big Bear in direct confrontation 353 354.

  • Releases a shock wave that throws all three opponents four or five meters backward 353.
  • Catches and shatters Nai’s ice attacks; destroys an enormous ice spike with a breath 353 354.
  • Sends Nai flying with a finger strike to her lower abdomen 354.
  • Projects a crushing aura that pins Nai down before lifting her and seizing her throat 355.
  • Fires an invisible air current that pierces Nai’s shoulder during his escape 356.

Space-Time Travel

Kazama opens spatial gateways to move between spaces and ultimately leave the Ruin 350 356.

  • Twists space into a black-mist vortex after restoring his body 350.
  • Creates another portal through an incantation and hand movements 356.
  • Forces the resisting Gourd to release purple energy, stabilizing an otherwise unusable portal 356.
  • Travels through a spatial passage to another planet 359.

Limits and Vulnerabilities

  • Tailed Beast Bomb: Survives Nai’s attack but suffers visible burns 355.
  • Red Ants: Believes their power could drain him dry within moments, forcing him to abandon his confrontation with Nai 356.
  • Energy reserves: Is low on energy after escaping and decides to consume native shinobi’s chakra before leaving the newly reached planet 359.
  • Incomplete knowledge: His memory of the Ruin’s directions is imperfect, and he fails to recognize that his Nai impersonation has been exposed 346 353.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Gourd — Initially belongs to Yui and shelters Kazama during travel between restricted spaces. He claims it can carry only one person out, later takes it from the incapacitated Yui, and forcibly uses it to stabilize his escape portal despite its resistance 303 316 350 356.
  • Purple Crystal — Located beside a monument in the Red Ant Desert. Kazama presents retrieving it as necessary for escape, but uses it in his curse-transfer and bodily-restoration process 348 350.
  • Withered Tree black oil — Poisonous material associated with the Ruin’s dead trees; Kazama uses it to form his restored body 302 350.
  • Tower — His Divine Artifact, which he forgets to retrieve before escaping. Recovering it would require confronting the man who sealed him 359.

Relationships

  • Yui Hyuga — Temporary benefactor and eventual victim. She agrees to honor Nai’s promise to help him escape, but he manipulates her into taking his curse and steals her Gourd 303 350.
  • Nai Hyuga — Saves her from the dead tree’s venom, earning her promise of rescue. Later impersonates her, attempts to eliminate her as a threat to his deception, and nearly kills her after his restoration 302 322 355.
  • Big Bear / Black Bear — Former companion and bitter enemy. Kazama stole his parents’ bodies; they subsequently compete for Yui’s trust and an escape opportunity. Big Bear intervenes to stop Kazama from killing Nai 316 342 356.
  • Orochimaru — Distrusted fellow traveler. Kazama obstructs his exchanges with Yui; Orochimaru later becomes fascinated by Kazama’s power while recognizing the danger he poses 308 354.
  • Xiao You — Teasing target. Kazama exploits Xiao You’s fear of ghosts, prompting him to hide in Yui’s hair and sleeve 304.
  • Red Ant Queen — Opponent who attempts to prevent his departure. Kazama taunts her and tells her to inform her master that he has returned 350 356.
  • Unnamed sealer — The man responsible for Kazama’s imprisonment and the obstacle to recovering his Tower 359.
