Ch. 1The "Bloodless" Didn't Count as Nobles
Plot and key events
- Weilin wakes injured in a wrecked room, with no clear memory of what happened. A servant is tending to him when his younger sister Lilia arrives, initially furious, then alarmed by his head wound.
- During the carriage ride home, Weilin absorbs the former owner’s memories. The original Weilin had failed two bloodline awakenings and was branded “Bloodless,” a status that left him beneath true nobles in a society ruled by bloodline.
- His engagement to Countess Diana Chenxi is likely to be annulled. Some relatives want Weilin’s cousin Leonard, who has strong bloodline talent, to take his place.
- A system activates after Weilin returns home. It reveals that his bloodlines are mixed and incompatible, but that his unusually strong soul can attempt purification. The required potion needs five grams of precious primordial blood crystal powder, far beyond his means.
- Weilin resolves to obtain the ingredients or earn enough money to buy them. Searching the original Weilin’s research notes, he finds evidence that the former owner had already investigated whether Thorn-Tailed Scorpion venom could awaken dormant bloodlines.
Character developments and interactions
- Weilin shifts from disoriented newcomer to determined problem-solver. Viewing bloodlines as something akin to genetic sequences, he sees a scientific path forward rather than accepting his supposed fate.
- Lilia shows deep concern for her brother: she arranges his care, cleans his wound, and discreetly warns him about the threatened engagement and Leonard’s possible replacement.
- Kaman and Weilin’s mother urge him to accept the family’s arrangements. Kaman argues that bloodlines cannot be forced into existence; his mother silently supports him, visibly distressed.
- Leonard, though absent, is established as Weilin’s longtime rival and a favored alternative because of his talent.
- Diana has not yet appeared, but her expected visit in three days makes the engagement crisis immediate.
Significant themes
- Inherited status and exclusion: In this society, bloodline determines rank, and the Bloodless occupy an insecure place between nobility and commoners.
- Fate versus agency: Weilin rejects the idea that failed awakenings define his future and looks for a way to change his circumstances.
- Knowledge as possibility: The system’s instructions and the original owner’s unfinished research offer a route forward, though practical barriers—especially the cost of rare ingredients—remain.
