Ch. 21Attack and Defense at the Walls
Key plot points and events
- A Gray Swamp Crocodile charges Veylin’s newly grown vine wall, but the wall’s stone-like surface withstands the impact and injures the beast.
- The defenders’ terror gives way to amazement and renewed confidence. Veylin is delighted to see that his Stone-Skinned Soft Vine is stronger than expected.
- A second crocodile bites the wall and uses a Death Roll, loosening and cracking a section of vines. Ordinary crossbow bolts prove too weak to kill the thick-skinned beasts.
- Veylin devises a new tactic: fire barbed bolts attached to ropes. After several missed shots, one bolt catches in a crocodile’s lower jaw. The defenders pull on the rope, driving the barb deeper and worsening the beast’s wound.
Character developments
- Veylin shifts from observing the wall’s performance to quickly adapting his strategy, showing confidence and tactical ingenuity.
- Barrett moves from dread to wonder, then takes charge of the defenders and follows Veylin’s orders.
- Old Walker goes from despair to reverence, calling the wall a miracle.
- The militiamen and mercenaries regain their nerve as they see the wall hold, and work together to attack the crocodiles.
Significant themes
- Ingenuity over brute force: Veylin’s rope-and-barb tactic turns a crocodile’s powerful bite against it.
- Fear transformed into resolve: Seeing the wall withstand an attack changes the defenders’ outlook.
- Unexpected strength and vulnerability: The wall is extraordinarily durable, but sustained twisting can damage it; the crocodiles are formidable, yet their own weapons can be exploited.
Character interactions
- Barrett commands the mercenaries and militia, first directing them to shoot at the crocodiles and later organizing the rope-tethered bolts on Veylin’s instruction.
- Veylin’s calm analysis guides the defenders’ response, while Barrett turns his plan into action.
- Mercenaries and militiamen cooperate to secure the rope and pull against the wounded crocodile.
