Ch. 521A new problem with winter uniforms
Plot points and events
- Veylin’s council examines a new light-gray winter uniform: a fitted, durable greatcoat that looks imposing and provides warmth even without enchantment. Veylin hopes the uniforms will make White Tower’s army a recognizable symbol of discipline and strength.
- Textile production is ready to supply about 2,000 unenchanted coats per day, but enchanting is the bottleneck. A Mage needs five focused hours to enchant one coat and can complete at most two daily; fewer than fifty qualified enchanters are available, far short of the 30,000 uniforms needed.
- Veylin rejects outside Mages as too slow and risky. After Elwin recalls historical “Array Enchantment” methods, Veylin orders local enchanters to produce what they can and announces an Alliance-wide bounty for a scalable enchanting technique or alternative way to keep warm. The reward is 1,000 Gold Suns plus patent rights and royalties.
- In a separate scene, Hans returns home drunk after being honored and paid by Baron Golden Whistle. He gives his earnings to Miri so she can exchange them for merit points and attend Mage Academy. As he notices Veylin’s bounty flyer, the words about rapid textile enchanting catch his attention, but he falls asleep before explaining why.
Character developments and interactions
- Veylin shows strategic foresight, treating uniforms as both practical equipment and a tool for projecting military power. He responds to a production crisis with a broad, generous incentive rather than relying only on existing resources.
- Elwin moves from embarrassment about the enchanting bottleneck to offering a useful historical lead and a proposal to search widely for expertise.
- Tristan supports the project, assesses the uniforms’ military impact, and accepts responsibility for organizing the available enchanters. Valerius evaluates the fabric and suggests—but Elwin rules out—a botanical alternative.
- Hans is proud of his service and devoted to Miri, sacrificing his earnings to support her education. Miri first fears he has lost his job, then shares his joy and gratitude. Hans’s interest in the bounty hints that he may have an idea or relevant knowledge.
Significant themes
- Industrialization and bottlenecks: Mass production depends on every stage keeping pace; skilled manual enchanting threatens to undermine the whole effort.
- Innovation and opportunity: Veylin seeks solutions from people of any background, while offering inventors lasting rewards and ownership.
- Power and image: The uniforms are designed not only for warmth but to inspire fear and embody military discipline.
- Sacrifice and education: Hans’s earnings represent personal risk and labor redirected toward Miri’s chance to study and improve her future.
