Background / History

Nangong Ling was one of two sons born to Stone Guanyin and Tianfeng Jushiro in Fusang. His mother, originally named Li Qi, was the sole survivor of the Huangshan Family after its destruction by Mount Hua. After mastering new martial arts, she abandoned her husband and children and returned to the mainland to take revenge on the sect 8.

Tianfeng Jushiro later entrusted Nangong Ling to Ren Ci, who adopted him. Nangong Ling eventually confined his adoptive father, relayed orders in his name, and recruited followers while oversight of the Beggar Gang weakened. He murdered Ren Ci using Heavenly One Divine Water, ostensibly to avenge his biological father, and succeeded him as chief 33 34 36 39.

Despite obtaining the leadership, Nangong Ling never secured control over the entire gang. He readmitted the notorious White Jade Demon Beggar to strengthen his position and used the gang’s manpower against Mount Hua. Unlike Wuhua, he had little personal identification with the Huangshan Family; he treated the campaign against Mount Hua largely as an assigned task 8 32 34.

Appearance

  • Rapidly graying hair: Within a few days of the campaign against his faction, roughly one-third of his hair turns gray 37.
  • Bloodshot eyes: Chu Liuxiang finds him exhausted and bloodshot, sitting amid intelligence reports in the Beggar Gang’s incense hall 37.
  • Eerily white teeth: His teeth stand out when he laughs during his final, increasingly unhinged confrontation with Chu 38.

Personality

Nangong Ling cultivates the image of a filial son and loyal friend, but places extraordinary importance on power and position. His willingness to recruit disreputable followers exposes the gap between that public image and his methods. Even when his position becomes nearly hopeless, he continues gambling on ways to retain the Beggar Gang leadership 30 31 32.

His strongest familial attachment is to Wuhua rather than to his mother’s clan. That devotion becomes fatal: even after Chu identifies Wuhua as his poisoner, Nangong Ling refuses to accept his brother’s betrayal 32 39.

The destruction of his faction leaves him bitter and desperate. He interprets Fang Yunhua’s refusal to confront him personally as contempt, and considers a powerless existence harder to endure than death. In his final encounter, his desire for revenge overtakes the dignity of his former friendship with Chu 38.

Abilities & Skills

Martial Arts

Nangong Ling belongs to the T3 tier, which Fang Yunhua regards as the threshold of a true martial-world powerhouse 33.

  • Exchanges seven rapid palm strikes with Chu Liuxiang while both are airborne 38.
  • Returns to his chair after the exchange without injury, but his strained landing and changed complexion reveal Chu’s clear superiority 38.
  • Ranks below Wuhua, whom Fang places half a tier above the other T3 fighters 33.
  • Previously traveled thousands of miles into the Great Desert to hunt the Blood-Drinking Mad Saber, Lu Qianpo 32.

Command and Covert Operations

His leadership gives him access to the Beggar Gang’s extensive membership and intelligence network, although many members remain outside his effective control 11 31.

  • Mobilizes followers for covert interference with Mount Hua’s businesses 11 32 34.
  • Sends trusted men, including White Jade Demon Beggar, to monitor and respond to Mount Hua’s movements 32 36.
  • Uses his position to conceal Qiu Lingsu’s whereabouts; ordinary gang disciples cannot supply information about her 30.
  • Cannot adequately suppress the rumors against him, revealing the limits of his authority within the gang 31.

Deception and Manipulation

Nangong Ling uses controlled access, personal reputation, and staged assurances to conceal his crimes 26 30 31.

  • Personally handles Ren Ci’s funeral and announces the cause of death, while few people see the body 26.
  • Presents Qiu Lingsu’s confinement as voluntary seclusion and protection of a family elder 30.
  • Seeks Chu’s public endorsement to repair his reputation, exploiting his friend’s standing in the martial world 31.
  • Cooperates with Wuhua to misdirect Chu’s investigation and turn Qiu’s potential rescuers against one another 29 30.

Relationships

  • Wuhua — Elder brother and accomplice. Nangong Ling trusts him more deeply than anyone else, but Wuhua comes to regard him as expendable and poisons him to sever the investigation’s trail 32 39.
  • Stone Guanyin — Mother. Her feud with Mount Hua motivates the family’s covert campaign against the sect 8 32.
  • Tianfeng Jushiro — Biological father. Entrusts him to Ren Ci; Nangong Ling later invokes revenge for his father as justification for killing his adoptive parent 36 39.
  • Ren Ci — Adoptive father and predecessor as Beggar Gang chief. Nangong Ling confines and poisons him before taking over the gang 33 34 36.
  • Qiu Lingsu — Ren Ci’s widow, whom he holds under house arrest. The rumors against him force him to preserve her life as a potential witness to his supposed innocence 30 32 36.
  • Chu Liuxiang — Close friend turned investigator and opponent. Chu continues to grieve for him despite uncovering his crimes and suffering his final curses 30 38 39.
  • Fang Yunhua — Strategist behind Mount Hua’s retaliation. Nangong Ling blames him for the collapse of his power and resents being denied a personal confrontation 37 38.
  • White Jade Demon Beggar — Recruited subordinate whose strength Nangong Ling values. He sends the man away partly because he fears that the subordinate’s hatred of Ren Ci will endanger Qiu Lingsu 32 36.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Blood Sea Fragrance Conspiracy

  • Qiu Lingsu secretly appeals to four old acquaintances for rescue. Nangong Ling initially targets their wealth, then decides to kill them after consulting Wuhua 30 36.
  • Chu reconstructs the sequence: Ximen Qian kills Zuo Youzheng, Spirit Vulture kills Ximen Qian, and Zhamuhe kills Spirit Vulture. Zhamuhe is subsequently poisoned with Heavenly One Divine Water 30.
  • Nangong Ling and Wuhua jointly obstruct Chu’s investigation, including tricking him into visiting the wrong temple 29.
  • Fang later recognizes that Wuhua’s deeper objective was Zhamuhe, whose kingdom Wuhua and Stone Guanyin intended to seize; Nangong Ling’s apparent failure to obtain money remains a question for Chu 46.

Rumor Campaign and Collapse

  • Fang instructs Mount Hua to spread suspicion about Nangong Ling’s involvement in Ren Ci’s death. The initial rumors emphasize the restricted funeral and Qiu Lingsu’s secluded life rather than directly declaring him guilty 11 26.
  • Nangong Ling asks Chu to visit Qiu and publicly clear his name. Chu agrees while privately assessing the possibility of an ambush and the opportunity to obtain evidence 30 31.
  • Nangong Ling sends White Jade Demon and other followers toward Mount Hua. Their absence allows Chu to visit Qiu alone and learn the truth about Ren Ci’s murder and the wider conspiracy 32 36.
  • Mount Hua exposes crimes associated with his faction, and numerous sects and clans join the purge. Most followers close to Nangong Ling are killed or flee, leaving him isolated in the incense hall 37.
  • Learning that Qiu has died destroys his remaining hope of using her to rebut the accusations. He identifies Fang Yunhua as the architect of his downfall 37.

Death on Daming Lake

  • After failing to overpower Chu, Nangong Ling takes him to a pleasure boat on Daming Lake. He claims that a hidden ally will arrive to deal with either Chu or Fang 38.
  • He drinks both cups of wine to demonstrate their safety, then convulses from Heavenly One Divine Water poisoning 38.
  • Chu identifies Wuhua as the poisoner and explains that his brother wants him dead to eliminate the remaining leads. Nangong Ling dies refusing to believe it, insisting on Wuhua’s invincibility and cursing Chu 39.

Aftermath

  • Authorities obtain Chu’s testimony about Nangong Ling’s crimes, Ren Ci’s murder, and his origins to validate the official account 39 40.
  • The public announcement connects both brothers to a long-running Japanese conspiracy involving Tianfeng Jushiro. Dai Duxing becomes acting Beggar Gang chief and promises reform 48.
  • Although weakened and stripped of assets, the Beggar Gang survives and retaliates against smaller factions that continue attacking it after the settlement 48.
