Personality
Liu Yaowen listens to his subordinates rather than blaming them for an investigation's difficulties. When Li Rongbin and Lin Feng question how they can catch an attacker without usable leads, he acknowledges their limitations and introduces outside assistance. He welcomes Huang Qingque warmly and is pleased that her military bearing earns the team's respect 5.
He is cautious around unfamiliar supernatural powers. Huang's warnings persuade him not to antagonize Black Rock Shooter, and he avoids questioning Mari after considering that her youthful appearance might conceal an ancient being. Although curious about Huang's findings, he withdraws his question when he thinks the information may be classified 14 15 16.
His pragmatism also has a calculating side. He considers the Gao family's revenge campaign dangerously foolish, but allows it to proceed in hopes that it will expose an unidentified psychic and create an opportunity for Bureau intervention. Dream-Invasion Investigation
Liu first appears briefing his task force on attacks that have left prospective Nova Academy students comatose. With public anger escalating, the Bureau director gives the team one week to apprehend the perpetrator. Huang Qingque's arrival supplies the first decisive breakthrough: after briefly reading the report, she announces that she knows the attacker's location 5.
During the operation, Liu authorizes Huang's plan to wake local residents through military-satellite calls. The suspect subsequently emerges as a chained, half-human monster pleading for rescue. Liu initially orders a cautious retreat, then opens fire when the creature breaks free and charges 12 13.
Black Rock Shooter intervenes when the team's weapons fail to stop Luo Yuan. Liu negotiates his transfer into custody and receives the heavy stone chain restraining him. After Mari retrieves Black Rock Shooter, he withdraws his personnel and takes Luo Yuan to the Bureau 14 15.
The investigation stalls: Luo Yuan cannot provide the needed information, and a raid on his warehouse finds nothing. Huang later shares fragmentary visions of Black Rock Shooter and Mari, suggesting that their appearance may herald the Great Catastrophe. Liu knows the term and its reported connection to governments revealing supernatural powers, but not the catastrophe's nature or timing 16.
Gao Chen Investigation
Liu oversees the inquiry into Gao Chen, who now answers questions truthfully and follows instructions after suffering extensive brain damage. He regards the unknown psychic responsible as a “ticking time bomb” within Shenzhou 36.
When the Gao family announces its intention to retaliate, Liu permits its hired specialist, Qing Xuanzi, to investigate. Privately, he hopes the family's actions will draw out the psychic. Qing's failed tracing attempt and apparent injuries deepen Liu's concern about the unidentified opponent 37 38.
Foreign-Infiltrator Crackdown
Liu sends Huang and Bureau personnel to supervise the Gao representative's continued search. Their investigation fails to uncover Gao Chen's attacker but instead exposes foreign infiltrators, including members of Evil Spirit Worship and the Playing Cards organization 44.
The operation ends with Liu presenting honorary banners to the Gao representative and Qing Xuanzi. Unbeknownst to the investigators, one of Chen Xiao's figurines has manipulated fate to redirect the revenge campaign 44.
