Oa had no sun.
At least, Hal hadn't seen one.
When he opened his eyes, a deep green dome hung overhead. Fine patterns of light flowed across the walls, and the air smelled of metal mixed with ozone.
The bed beneath him was hard.
As hard as the tarmac at Ferris Aircraft.
Hal sat up, and his first instinct was to check his right hand.
The Green Lantern Ring was still there.
"Good."
Hal stared at it.
"So I wasn't drunk last night, and I didn't hallucinate after bringing an alien corpse home."
The ring didn't answer.
The door opened.
An alien with orange-red skin and fishlike gill markings walked in. He wore a Green Lantern Corps uniform, its chest emblem glowing a soft green.
"You're awake, Hal Jordan."
His voice was calm and measured.
"I'm Tomar-Re. I help new members adjust to life on Oa."
Hal looked at him.
"You look friendly."
Tomar-Re paused.
"Thank you."
"So you won't beat me with a stick?"
"No."
"Great."
Just as Hal breathed a sigh of relief, a roar came from outside.
"Recruit! Report to the training ground in ten seconds!"
The entire wall shook.
Hal's smile vanished.
Tomar-Re stepped aside, clearing the doorway.
"That's Kilowog."
"He's in charge of teaching you how to stay alive."
Hal glanced down at his bare feet.
"Is it too late to go back to Earth?"
"I'm afraid so."
Tomar-Re answered politely.
"Your ring has already verified your identity. Unless the Guardians approve otherwise, you remain the Green Lantern of Sector 2814."
Hal raised his right hand.
"Hear that?"
"I'd like to resign."
The ring flashed.
[Request denied.]
Hal swore.
"This lousy company doesn't even have an HR department."
