What greeted him was neither the Presidential Suite at the Wayne Royal Hotel nor the shabby Clinic on Lake Street. It was an absurdly spacious office.
Underfoot lay a Persian Handmade Carpet that muffled every footstep. On his left, an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling bulletproof glass overlooked the whole East End. Several obviously expensive abstract paintings hung on the wall to his right.
At the center of the room stood an enormous mahogany desk. Jessica Jones sat cross-legged on top of it without a shred of decorum, holding a diamond-studded, solid-gold letter opener. With a crack, she smashed a walnut to pieces.
Shell fragments flew everywhere.
Yang Ming adjusted his Gold-Rimmed Glasses, his gaze settling on the deep gouges in the desktop.
"I was gone for almost a year." Yang Ming tossed the paper bag onto the couch. "And this is how you plan to welcome your boss?"
The letter opener froze in Jessica's hand. She jerked her head up, and her perpetually world-weary eyes lit up instantly.
"Good God!" Jessica sprang off the desk and rushed over barefoot, looking Yang Ming up and down. "You're actually alive? I thought you'd died in some alien's sewer!"
"Sorry to disappoint you. Not only did I survive, I even stopped by Coast City for some sea air." Yang Ming brushed the dust off his suit.
