The cigarette in Yang Ming's mouth was still unlit. Rain struck his lighter, snuffing out the flame.
"Comms are down." Jessica tapped her earpiece. All she heard was a piercing dead tone. "The military vehicles' GPS screens have all gone black, too."
Yang Ming said nothing. His Observation Haki spread instantly, like an invisible net.
Chaos had broken out in the forest.
Three thousand students scattered like frightened sheep. Several "instructors" in Marine Corps training uniforms suddenly turned their guns on them. A rifle butt slammed into a student's back.
"Why are you running? Rule breakers go to the detention area!" a fake instructor snapped. He herded a dozen younger students deeper into the woods.
A real instructor realized something was wrong and had just drawn his sidearm.

A tranquilizer dart issued by Wayne Enterprises struck him straight in the neck. The instructor collapsed.
Yang Ming fixed his gaze on a spot five hundred meters away.
That gunshot hadn't hit some troublemaker running wild. It had hit a girl who had taken a bullet for another student.
"Jessica, tear the roof off that wrecked armored vehicle." Yang Ming threw away his cigarette and strode into the rain. "Sister Lie, come with me."
Yang Ming covered the five hundred meters in just ten seconds.
Muddy water splashed. He stopped beside a hollow.
The girl lay in a pile of rotting leaves, a bloody hole in her abdomen. Her intestines had ruptured, and blood mixed with muddy water poured from the wound.
"Save... save her..." The boy beside her trembled in terror.
Yang Ming dropped to one knee and pressed his fingers to her carotid artery. Her pulse was barely a thread.
