Gu Wenze's hands stilled. He slowly raised his eyes, his dangerous gaze cutting toward her like a blade. As if something had occurred to him, he said through gritted teeth, "Qiao Hua, are you thinking of running away again?"
Qiao Hua felt a little helpless. "I was just asking."
"Not even that!" Gu Wenze snapped, catching her wrist. "If you dare leave, I'll find you, even if I have to search to the ends of the earth."
Qiao Hua muttered, "If I really left, you probably wouldn't be able to find me."
By then, they would truly belong to different worlds.
Judging by Gu Wenze's reaction, he would probably go mad if she really left, wouldn't he?
Qiao Hua sighed inwardly, unable to put a name to what she was feeling.
She dropped the subject and fell silent, her thoughts a mystery.
Gu Wenze kept feeling that something was off about Qiao Hua today. Out of habit, he tried listening to her thoughts to find out what was on her mind, but he heard nothing.
He couldn't help feeling disappointed.
If he could hear her thoughts, at least he would know what she was thinking right now.
Gu Wenze always felt that he couldn't fathom Qiao Hua's heart. Even with her right beside him, he felt as though she might leave at any moment.
It filled him with an inexplicable agitation and panic.
Night fell. They lay in bed, their bodies close together but their minds elsewhere.
Gu Wenze was thinking about Qiao Hua's strange behavior that evening, while Qiao Hua was considering what Chen Xingjian had told her.
"Are you asleep?"
Gu Wenze's low voice suddenly sounded beside her.
Qiao Hua slowly turned her head and met his eyes in the darkness. He was staring intently at her.
"Not
