By the time the two of them reached the hospital, it was well past midnight.
The corridor was deathly silent. A lonely figure sat on the bench outside the delivery room. Only when they drew closer did they recognize You Xiaonian.
The overhead lights cast a long shadow behind You Xiaonian. His head hung low as he stared at the floor beneath his feet, lost in thought. His white shirt was stained with blood, a disturbing sight.
Qiao Hua exchanged a glance with Gu Wenze. With no time to worry about anything else, she hurried forward. "How is Shen Zhen?"
You Xiaonian slowly raised his head. His eyes were bloodshot, even their corners tinged red. It took him a long while to speak, and his voice was as hoarse as if he had swallowed a handful of sand. "The doctors are trying to save her."
"How did she go into premature labor when she was perfectly fine?" Qiao Hua asked anxiously.
Shen Zhen's due date was still more than a month away.
Pain flashed through You Xiaonian's eyes at the question. "She slipped and fell on the street."
Qiao Hua was surprised. She had assumed You Xiaonian had something to do with it, but it turned out Shen Zhen had suffered an accident.
"What did the doctor say?" Qiao Hua pressed. "Is it serious?"
If they listened carefully, they could hear how labored You Xiaonian's breathing was, his voice wavering at the end. "The doctor said the baby might not survive and told me to prepare myself."
No way.
It was that serious?
Seeing Qiao Hua standing there in a daze, Gu Wenze patted her shoulder and reassured her in a steady voice. "Don't panic. Shen Zhen will be all right."
Distraught, Qiao Hua nodded and let Gu Wenze help
