Background / History
Yuanbao lived around Golden Mountain Temple, catching mice and pursuing other cats. Cultivation developed through listening to Buddhist scripture and receiving incense offerings. Yuanbao describes a largely vegetarian temple diet, supplemented by occasional meat brought by a visitor, and explicitly distinguishes this upbringing from gu witchcraft sustained by mutilated souls and bloody sacrifices 310 482 544.
More than twenty years before revealing the story to Wanwan, Yuanbao encountered the dying Wushuang near the temple. Wushuang, Eastern Lin’s youngest prime minister, had suffered repeated sexual abuse by his ruler. To protect his childhood fiancée, Rong Xue, he broke their engagement and went to Great Xia as a spy. Before dying, he entrusted Yuanbao with a crescent-shaped jade pendant and asked that Rong Xue be told he had remained faithful—unless she had already married 544.
Wushuang offered the cat anything he possessed as payment. Captivated by his beauty, Yuanbao chose his appearance, which later became Yuanbao’s human face. Initially unable to provide a proper grave, Yuanbao eventually returned with Wanwan to bury the exposed remains securely 544.
Yuanbao also hints that an unnamed “old bastard” harmed him in the past. Wanwan’s family suspects he was neutered as a kitten, but the account does not confirm their inference 350.
Appearance
- Human build: Tall and slender, with delicate, almost feminine features and slender, jade-like fingers 211 488.
- Eyes: Reddish-gold 211.
- Voice: Initially described as soft and androgynous; Yuanbao can adopt a sweet, coy register when presenting as a woman 211 232.
- Clothing: Enjoys feminine clothing, including a smoky-purple gauze dress with light makeup and a red dress worn to Emerald Mist House 317 488 493.
- Cat features: Can display and conceal cat ears while in human form 544.
- Borrowed face: Looks exactly like Wushuang because Yuanbao took his appearance as payment for carrying out his dying request 544.
- Later form: After Wanwan’s transformation, Yuanbao has a female body while retaining her striking beauty 563.
Personality
Yuanbao is vain, proud, flirtatious, and openly attracted to handsome young men. After becoming human, he insists on preserving his dignified image and refuses to let Wanwan ride him outside where others might see. He initially treats flirtation as harmless, failing to understand why Jing Wu becomes jealous 211 316 317.
That self-confidence supports a talent for performance. Yuanbao can cry convincingly, play a wronged lover, and feign romantic devotion or helplessness to manipulate an audience. These acts disrupt Liu Shi’s unsuitable marriage negotiations and later draw out the Eastern Lin ruler’s possessiveness and political ambitions 234 236 494.
Beneath the teasing, Yuanbao is compassionate toward vulnerable people and spirits. Yuanbao avoids destroying the dead infant girls at the Abandoned Infant Pagoda, comforts Liu Zi Xing over his parents’ fate, and refuses to leave Liuli alone after her father abandons her 354 439 518.
Yuanbao values mutual happiness rather than one-sided suffering in love. Rong Xue’s lifelong fidelity deeply moves her, and her relationship with Jing Wu eventually shifts from evasive teasing to reassurance, affection, and a direct proposal of marriage 301 563.

- Maintains apparent helplessness until the ruler’s attendants withdraw, then knocks him unconscious with spiritual power 494.
Limits and Vulnerabilities
- Wanwan’s words can immobilize Yuanbao. The threat that she might turn him back into a cat is enough to secure his cooperation 211.
- High cultivation helps prevent serious injuries from forcing Yuanbao back into original form, but wounds can still require recuperation 220.
- Ordinary weapons can injure Yuanbao: Xia Qianhui accidentally uses a real blade during a staged incident, leaving a bleeding chest wound that Wanwan heals 392.
