Background / History
Life at Fragrant Pavilion
Xingran grows up with his mother, Cheng Yunmeng, a former palace maid who received the title of Consort Lan after his birth. Their low standing leaves them vulnerable to bullying by other consorts, princes, and even their own servants. Their courtyard is cold and neglected, and Xingran regularly searches for food because his mother is often served only leftovers 6 13 14 21.
Jiang Huai’an repeatedly targets him, sometimes with Jiang Yingcheng’s participation. Xingran generally endures these attacks without defending himself, but his silence does not erase his pride or resentment 1 20 21.
The Stone-Steps Accusation
Huai’an arranges for a subordinate to push Yingcheng down the stone steps, then accuses Xingran of injuring her. Xingran remains silent while being berated. Yingcheng, newly informed of the truth by 007, tries to protect him; the discovery of the culprit’s cuff button undermines the accusation. Emperor Mingze orders further interrogation and sends Xingran to his chambers for medical examination 1 2 3 4.
Yingcheng subsequently offers him pastries. Initially suspicious that she has found another way to torment him, he accepts only after considering how much his mother would enjoy them. His faint smile becomes their first small step toward reconciliation 6.
Protecting Consort Lan
When Xingran finds Yingcheng beside his mother on the floor, he assumes she caused the fall and pulls her away roughly. Consort Lan explains that Yingcheng was trying to help. Although Yingcheng leaves crying, she returns with a food parcel; Xingran remains wary of this kindness because of her earlier behavior 14.
At Flowing Splendor Hall, Noble Consort Rou threatens to punish Consort Lan in retaliation for Huai’an’s punishment. Xingran breaks his habitual silence, kneels, and asks Rou to punish him instead. His mother likewise offers to take the punishment, while Huai’an exploits their distress to demand Xingran’s submission. The emperor’s arrival interrupts the confrontation, and Huai’an is subsequently transferred to Consort Yan’s residence 20 21 22 23.
The Fragrant Pavilion Assassin
When the maid Zuilan ruins their food and threatens Yingcheng, Xingran physically intervenes and shields his sister—an unprecedented act of defiance against the servant. Yingcheng’s thoughts expose both a planned treason accusation against mother and son and the presence of an assassin in their courtyard 29 30.
During the confrontation with Ji Xiangyang, Xingran recognizes that the assassin intends to seize him. He tries to use the maid Xun Tao as leverage, but she takes his dagger and turns him into a hostage. Yingcheng’s false announcement that the emperor has arrived creates an opening: Xingran and Xun Tao jointly stab Ji, while Lu Yao shoots him from concealment 32 33 34.
To secure credit for Xingran, Lu Yao pretends that the prince fired the arrow, with Changshun and the attendants supporting the account. Emperor Mingze later replaces the household’s abusive maids. Xingran comforts his shaken mother, believing their misfortune has brought a lasting improvement 34 36.
Gifts and Education
Xingran attempts to return Yingcheng’s rabbit pouch, believing she left it behind accidentally. Consort Wan explains that it is a gift. Finding roughly a dozen gold beans inside, he recognizes its practical value, although her generosity makes him wonder whether someone has taken over her body 36.
Yingcheng also helps bring him into lessons with the respected scholar Liu Hongfei. Having studied privately without adequate guidance, Xingran values the opportunity and seeks additional explanations after class 41 42 49.
His first day at the academy brings renewed bullying from Jiang Monian and Jiang Yunjian, who mock his shabby belongings and destroy his mother’s pastries. After Yingcheng intervenes, Xingran supports her account of the incident and quietly thanks her with a desk and pastries. He later tries to help her answer a classroom question by writing the answer for her 47 48 49.
By Chapter 50, he increasingly recognizes the sincerity of Yingcheng’s efforts but cannot easily dismiss memories of her past cruelty. He accompanies her to lunch with their mothers and shows remorse when he realizes that leaving Jiang Qiuyu behind could expose the younger prince to retaliation 50.
Foretold Future
According to 007’s account of the original story, Lin Jinshu will seize the throne but nearly ruin Great Rui through poor rule. Xingran is destined to reclaim the throne and gradually restore the country’s strength and prosperity. This is a predicted outcome, not an accession shown in the supplied chapters 4 41.
Appearance
- Build: Thin and frail when examined by the imperial physician 4.
- Facial resemblance: His features resemble Jiang Yanchuan’s by roughly seventy percent; his cold demeanor makes the likeness more striking 4.
- Expression: Usually impassive, with an icy gaze and tightly controlled reactions 1 2 4.
- Hair: Worn in a topknot 36.
- Clothing and belongings: Wears poorer-quality clothing than Yingcheng and carries a shabby cloth schoolbag 14 47.
Personality
Xingran is withdrawn, proud, and deeply guarded. Years of mistreatment have taught him to endure humiliation without offering his tormentors an obvious reaction. His outward composure conceals fierce resentment toward the unequal treatment of the emperor’s children 1 21 36.
His mother is his clearest vulnerability and strongest priority. He searches for their meals, saves delicacies for her, checks her safety before pursuing Yingcheng, and offers to suffer punishment in her place 6 14 21.
Trust develops slowly for him. Yingcheng’s changed behavior repeatedly challenges his expectations, but he expresses gratitude through practical gestures rather than declarations. His eagerness to question his teacher also reveals diligence beneath his reserved manner 48 49 50.
