Background / History
Qing entered the palace hoping to live peacefully rather than compete for imperial favor. She treated her household servants generously and generally disciplined mistakes by smacking their palms, described as a comparatively mild punishment within the inner palace. Her greatest wish was to have a child of her own, but she remained childless after years in the palace 16 17 19.
She believed Noble Consort Rou was a kindred spirit. The two addressed each other by their personal names, called each other sisters, and exchanged gifts. Unknown to Qing, Rou repeatedly used her name to conceal the mistreatment of other consorts and supplied harmful gifts that undermined her fertility 16 17 20.
In the future revealed through Jiang Yingcheng’s thoughts, Qing’s trusted maid Xueqing would falsely testify that she had abused other consorts. This testimony would contribute to Qing’s downfall and eventual death from illness in the Cold Palace. Qing learns of this fate before those events occur 18.
Appearance
- Jiang Yingcheng immediately admires her beauty upon meeting her 16.
- She has beautiful phoenix eyes 28.
- Her usual bearing is elegant, serene, and dignified 19 28.
Personality
Qing is affectionate toward young children, particularly those not yet shaped by their mothers’ palace schemes. Her longing for motherhood makes Yingcheng’s warmth especially meaningful: after discovering the damage to her health, she begins imagining a future child resembling the little princess 16 18.
Her gentleness does not prevent decisive retaliation. Once she discovers Rou’s schemes, Qing punishes the servants involved while preserving opportunities to use them against their patron. She also considers Yingcheng’s safety, avoiding a punishment justified solely by the child’s accusation because that could make Rou direct her resentment toward Yingcheng 18 19.
Abilities & Skills
Hearing Jiang Yingcheng’s Thoughts
Qing begins hearing Yingcheng’s inner voice during their first meeting. She conceals this discovery from the princess, who remains unaware that her thoughts are audible 16 17.
- Learns about Rou’s attacks on her reputation and fertility 16 17.
- Identifies Xueqing’s allegiance and intended false testimony 18.
- Recognizes the Poison-Removing Pill despite Yingcheng presenting it as a snack 28.
Palace Maneuvering
Qing uses formal courtesy, justified punishments, and access to the emperor’s attendants to challenge Rou without immediately declaring an open feud 19 20.
- Keeps Xueqing alive after punishing her, intending to use the spy to pass false information to Rou 18.
- Gives Miaoxi an additional punishment for wrongdoing committed in Qing’s name, rather than making Yingcheng the sole reason 19.
- Leaves Changshun outside Flowing Splendor Hall so he can discreetly report events to Emperor Mingze 20.
- Takes Rou’s powerful natal family into account when planning retaliation; Rou also acknowledges that Qing’s family background is significant 17 20.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Exposure of Rou’s Schemes
Miaoxi attempts to summon Consort Lan under Qing’s name, although she actually serves Rou. Yingcheng and Changshun expose the deception and bring the maid to Anqin Hall. During the ensuing meeting, Qing hears Yingcheng’s thoughts and discovers that Rou has used similar schemes repeatedly to make her appear cruel 15 16.
Yingcheng then identifies Qing’s sachet as a source of infertility-causing herbs. Qing recalls that Rou has given her replacement sachets for years. When Yingcheng privately plans to hide the sachet in Rou’s room, Qing immediately hands it over. She also lets the princess collect other dangerous gifts, including a box treated with saffron juice and writing paper soaked in hyssop juice 17.
Betrayal Within Anqin Hall
Xueqing objects to Yingcheng removing the gifts. The princess’s thoughts reveal that the maid serves Rou, knowingly encourages Qing to wear the harmful sachet, and would later testify against her 18.
Qing slaps Xueqing and orders twenty heavy strokes of the paddle. Although furious, she stops short of killing her, recognizing the value of using Rou’s own spy against her. Yingcheng comforts Qing and privately resolves to obtain medicine that could heal her damaged body 18.
Confrontation at Flowing Splendor Hall
Qing orders twenty strokes for Miaoxi, then another twenty for using her name to commit wrongdoing at the Fragrant Pavilion. She brings the unconscious maid to Rou’s residence as evidence that the deception has been exposed 19 20.
Rou dismisses the false summons as a slip of the tongue and assumes Qing will support her retaliation against Consort Lan and Jiang Xingran. Qing outwardly agrees while anticipating the emperor’s reaction to Rou’s conduct 20.
Qing subsequently recognizes that Yingcheng is staging another accident. After the emperor intervenes and leaves with the princess, Qing brings Consort Lan and Xingran out after him before returning to Anqin Hall 21 23.
Hope of Recovery
Yingcheng spends Merit Points on a Poison-Removing Pill and delivers it to Qing. Understanding its purpose through the child’s thoughts, Qing gratefully accepts it as a possible way to undo Rou’s poisoning and regain a chance at motherhood 28.
By the following chapter, Qing has swallowed the exceptionally bitter pill and begun clearing Rou’s gifts from her residence. She shares sweets with Yingcheng and smiles without sorrow for the first time in nearly two years. No pregnancy or confirmed restoration of fertility is documented in the provided chapters 29.
