Background / History
Life at Fragrant Pavilion
Xingran grows up with his mother, Cheng Yunmeng, a former palace maid who received the title of Consort Lan after his birth. Their low standing leaves them vulnerable to bullying by other consorts, princes, and even their own servants. Their courtyard is cold and neglected, and Xingran regularly searches for food because his mother is often served only leftovers 6 13 14 21.
Jiang Huai’an repeatedly targets him, sometimes with Jiang Yingcheng’s participation. Xingran generally endures these attacks without openly defending himself, but his silence does not erase his pride or resentment. Later revelations establish that he frequently retaliates in secret when no one is watching, acquiring considerable experience in underhanded fighting 1 20 21 108.
The Stone-Steps Accusation
Huai’an arranges for a subordinate to push Yingcheng down the stone steps, then accuses Xingran of injuring her. Xingran remains silent while being berated. Yingcheng, newly informed of the truth by 007, tries to protect him; the discovery of the culprit’s cuff button undermines the accusation. Emperor Mingze orders further interrogation and sends Xingran to his chambers for medical examination 1 2 3 4.
Yingcheng subsequently offers him pastries. Initially suspicious that she has found another way to torment him, he accepts only after considering how much his mother would enjoy them. His faint smile becomes their first small step toward reconciliation 6.
Protecting Consort Lan
When Xingran finds Yingcheng beside his mother on the floor, he assumes she caused the fall and pulls her away roughly. Consort Lan explains that Yingcheng was trying to help. Although Yingcheng leaves crying, she returns with a food parcel; Xingran remains wary of this kindness because of her earlier behavior 14.
At Flowing Splendor Hall, Noble Consort Rou threatens to punish Consort Lan in retaliation for Huai’an’s punishment. Xingran breaks his habitual silence, kneels, and asks Rou to punish him instead. His mother likewise offers to take the punishment, while Huai’an exploits their distress to demand Xingran’s submission. The emperor’s arrival interrupts the confrontation, and Huai’an is subsequently transferred to Consort Yan’s residence 20 21 22 23.
The Fragrant Pavilion Assassin
When the maid Zuilan ruins their food and threatens Yingcheng, Xingran physically intervenes and shields his sister—an unprecedented act of defiance against the servant. Yingcheng’s thoughts expose both a planned treason accusation against mother and son and the presence of an assassin in their courtyard 29 30.
During the confrontation with Ji Xiangyang, Xingran recognizes that the assassin intends to seize him. He tries to use the maid Xun Tao as leverage, but she takes his dagger and turns him into a hostage. Yingcheng’s false announcement that the emperor has arrived creates an opening: Xingran and Xun Tao jointly stab Ji, while Lu Yao shoots him from concealment 32 33 34.
To secure credit for Xingran, Lu Yao pretends that the prince fired the arrow, with Changshun and the attendants supporting the account. Emperor Mingze later replaces the household’s abusive maids. Xingran comforts his shaken mother, believing their misfortune has brought a lasting improvement 34 36.
Gifts and Education
Xingran attempts to return Yingcheng’s rabbit pouch, believing she left it behind accidentally. Consort Wan explains that it is a gift. Finding roughly a dozen gold beans inside, he recognizes its practical value, although her generosity makes him wonder whether someone has taken over her body 36.
Yingcheng also helps bring him into lessons with the respected scholar Liu Hongfei. Having studied privately without adequate guidance, Xingran values the opportunity and seeks additional explanations after class 41 42 49.
His first day at the academy brings renewed bullying from Jiang Monian and Jiang Yunjian, who mock his shabby belongings and destroy his mother’s pastries. After Yingcheng intervenes, Xingran supports her account of the incident and quietly thanks her with a desk and pastries. He later tries to help her answer a classroom question by writing the answer for her 47 48 49.
By Chapter 50, he increasingly recognizes the sincerity of Yingcheng’s efforts but cannot easily dismiss memories of her past cruelty. He accompanies her to lunch with their mothers and shows remorse when he realizes that leaving Jiang Qiuyu behind could expose the younger prince to retaliation 50.
His gradual softening continues when he accepts a piece of fatty pork from Yingcheng. Although he normally dislikes rich, greasy food, he finds that this particular offering tastes good 57.
Secret Retaliation and Hearing Yingcheng’s Thoughts
After returning from the meal, Xingran learns from Consort Lan that she can hear Yingcheng’s thoughts. His mother tells him that mutual affection with Yingcheng allows others to hear her inner voice. He understands the explanation but recognizes that years of hatred cannot disappear overnight; nevertheless, he puts aside his book and approaches when Yingcheng offers pastries the following day 58.
Xingran secretly pushes Huai’an from behind after checking that no one is watching. When Huai’an later confronts Yingcheng about the incident, Xingran is alarmed that his retaliation has brought suspicion onto her instead 59.
During the emperor’s intervention, Xingran and Lin Jinshu unexpectedly hear Yingcheng’s inner voice. Both recognize that the words cannot have come from her mouth. Yingcheng subsequently conceals Xingran’s involvement in the earlier attack, drawing suspicion onto herself rather than exposing him. Surprised and moved, Xingran begins to defend her, but obeys his father’s signal to step back. Huai’an is confined for three months, while Monian and Yunjian receive one-month confinements 60.
The Lin Residence Fight
At the Lin residence, Xingran overpowers Lin Jingshan and Lin Yelei despite having received no instruction from a proper martial-arts tutor. His advantage comes from years of secret retaliation and the unorthodox fighting methods he developed. Lin Jinshu joins him with a wooden stick hidden beforehand, and the two coordinate their attacks 108.
When approaching footsteps threaten to expose them, Xingran puts the stick into Lin Jingshan’s hand, helping make the Lin boys appear to be the aggressors. The Shadow Guards understand what happened but support the princes’ account 108.
After the outing, Emperor Mingze playfully reprimands Xingran and Yingcheng for sneaking out, invoking a complaint from their teacher. Xingran leaves with Yingcheng when the emperor orders Lin Jinshu to remain behind 113.
The Cold Palace Secret Chamber
When Huai’an confronts the children at the palace lesson area, Xingran initially considers avoiding opposition to him. He nevertheless joins the others in supporting Yingcheng, working with Sheng Shixu to emphasize Huai’an’s responsibility to protect his younger sister 228.
During the ensuing hide-and-seek game in the Cold Palace, Xingran and Sheng follow Yingcheng after hearing her plan to trap Luo Fuying and implicate Huai’an. As the palace native most familiar with the surroundings, Xingran leads their group and positions Sheng at the rear to prevent Yingcheng from running off. They discover an underground passage and enter after consulting the girls; Xingran helps illuminate the corridor by lighting torches 228 229 230.
The exploration becomes dangerous when a mysterious man traps the children in a side chamber. They escape through another exit and are brought back to the surface by Liaochen and Yu Xingmian. During the rescue, Xingran deliberately avoids catching the unconscious Sheng, then smilingly thanks Yu for warning him that the boy would otherwise have fallen onto him 235 238.
At Wuyang Hall, Luo Fuying and Sheng accuse Huai’an of closing the mechanism door. Pressed to corroborate their account, Xingran avoids openly endorsing a claim he knows would deceive the emperor. Instead, he points out that the group has not yet explained how they became trapped. The subsequent investigation identifies the actual intruder as Xing Hengyi, a Martial Arts Grandmaster suspected of serving Prince Xin 237 238.
Chi Yimian’s Attack
Before the New Year’s Banquet, Xingran and Sheng react immediately to a powerful blast at a window, grabbing Yingcheng and rolling her clear. They keep her moving as the children flee through Shaking Light Hall, where Chi Yimian intercepts them with a concealed flexible sword 249.
Xingran recognizes that Noble Consort Rou is prepared to let Chi attack and then deny responsibility. He coordinates with Sheng, initially intending to retrieve Luo Fuying while Sheng distracts their opponent. When Yingcheng discovers a Hidden Weapon Case through her system, Xingran trips Sheng before he can charge, preventing him from rushing into danger 249 250.
The children share Yingcheng’s Hidden Weapon Cases and fire repeated volleys at Chi. Xingran understands that the apparent shortage of weapons is not necessarily final, since Yingcheng can obtain more at the cost of Merit Points. He also considers using the opening to eliminate Noble Consort Rou, whom he regards as a major source of danger to the imperial harem 250.
His plan becomes more ruthless as the fight continues: he keeps a weapon aimed toward Luo Fuying while watching Rou, intending to frighten Luo into Rou’s position and strike both of them in a way that appears accidental. The supplied passage establishes his intention, not that he successfully carries it out 251.
After the crisis, Emperor Mingze claims responsibility for giving Yingcheng the concealed weapons and has Rou dragged away when she challenges him. Xingran returns to Cloudbrook Hall with the other children and witnesses Yingcheng energetically publicizing the assassination attempt to visiting rulers 254.
Foretold Future
According to 007’s account of the original story, Lin Jinshu will seize the throne but nearly ruin Great Rui through poor rule. Xingran is destined to reclaim the throne and gradually restore the country’s strength and prosperity. This is a predicted outcome, not an accession shown in the supplied chapters 4 41.
Appearance
- Build: Thin and frail when examined by the imperial physician 4.
- Facial resemblance: His features resemble Jiang Yanchuan’s by roughly seventy percent; his cold demeanor makes the likeness more striking 4.
- Expression: Usually impassive, with an icy gaze and tightly controlled reactions 1 2 4.
- Hair: Worn in a topknot 36.
- Clothing and belongings: Wears poorer-quality clothing than Yingcheng and carries a shabby cloth schoolbag 14 47.
- Later demeanor: Yingcheng notices more youthful vitality in his otherwise icy face when he emerges from the academy 68.
- Childlike touches: The stuffed-doll charms on his schoolbag lend his cold-faced appearance an unusual touch of childish cuteness 50.
Personality
Xingran is withdrawn, proud, and deeply guarded. Years of mistreatment have taught him to endure humiliation without offering his tormentors an obvious reaction. His outward composure conceals fierce resentment toward the unequal treatment of the emperor’s children 1 21 36.
His mother is his clearest vulnerability and strongest priority. He searches for their meals, saves delicacies for her, checks her safety before pursuing Yingcheng, and offers to suffer punishment in her place 6 14 21.
Trust develops slowly for him. Yingcheng’s changed behavior repeatedly challenges his expectations, but he expresses gratitude through practical gestures rather than declarations. His eagerness to question his teacher also reveals diligence beneath his reserved manner 48 49 50.
His apparent passivity is selective rather than absolute. He avoids openly resisting powerful bullies but takes revenge when he can conceal his involvement. This distinction becomes explicit in his attack on Huai’an and the later revelation of years of clandestine fights 59 108.
As his bond with Yingcheng strengthens, he becomes more visibly protective, backing her against Huai’an and immediately pulling her away from danger during Chi Yimian’s attack. He remains calculating under pressure, stopping Sheng’s reckless charge and looking beyond the immediate attacker to the person enabling the threat 228 249 250.
His cunning can extend to deception and lethal intentions. He helps stage the Lin residence fight to shift blame, deliberately lets Sheng fall rather than catching him, and considers killing Rou and Luo Fuying under the cover of an accident. However, when directly questioned before the emperor about the Cold Palace incident, he avoids affirming a false accusation 108 235 237 251.
Abilities & Skills
Situational Awareness
Xingran notices threats and inconsistencies, initially even without the information available to those who hear Yingcheng’s thoughts.
- Recognizes Ji Xiangyang’s intention to take him hostage from the assassin’s gaze 32.
- Notices his mother’s behavioral changes and connects them to Yingcheng’s visits 30.
- Investigates the position of the concealed archer after the fight 33.
- Cannot hear Yingcheng’s thoughts in Chapter 7, despite the emperor’s earlier suspicions; this changes explicitly in Chapter 60 2 3 7 60.
- Recognizes Noble Consort Rou’s intention to permit Chi Yimian’s attack while preserving the option to deny involvement 249.
- Accounts for Yingcheng’s ability to obtain additional weapons through Merit Points rather than accepting the group’s apparent ammunition shortage at face value 250.
Hearing Yingcheng’s Thoughts
Xingran first explicitly hears Yingcheng’s unspoken thoughts during Huai’an’s confrontation with the children. He and Lin Jinshu recognize her voice despite her visibly pouting rather than speaking 60.
- Learns from Consort Lan beforehand that mutual affection with Yingcheng is the condition she associates with hearing the thoughts 58.
- Hears Yingcheng’s Cold Palace scheme and follows her rather than leaving her to carry it out alone 228 229.
- Uses his knowledge of her thoughts to avoid falsely corroborating the accusation against Huai’an 237.
- Reacts immediately when her thoughts reveal the availability of a Hidden Weapon Case during Chi Yimian’s attack 249.
- The demonstrated ability concerns Yingcheng’s inner voice; the supplied chapters do not establish general telepathy or independent access to her system 60 249 250.
Improvised Combat
Xingran fights through direct physical intervention, dagger use, and unorthodox methods developed through secret retaliation, rather than a named martial discipline. By the Lin residence incident, he is explicitly described as lacking instruction from a proper martial-arts tutor but possessing enough practical experience to overpower the two Lin boys 108.
- Knocks Zuilan back and places himself between her and Yingcheng 30.
- Attempts to threaten Ji Xiangyang through Xun Tao, but loses control of the dagger when she lunges 32.
- Helps drive the dagger into Ji Xiangyang’s back during the counterattack 33.
- Receives credit for the decisive arrow shot, although Lu Yao actually fires it 34.
- Secretly pushes Huai’an from behind after checking that no one is watching 59.
- Overpowers Lin Jingshan and Lin Yelei using the unconventional fighting methods acquired through years of hidden revenge 108.
- Pulls Yingcheng clear of a blast and rolls with the momentum to get her away from a window 249.
- Trips Sheng Shixu to prevent him from charging a superior opponent 250.
- Uses a Hidden Weapon Case during the confrontation with Chi Yimian and attempts to create a favorable firing opportunity against Rou and Luo Fuying 250 251.
Study and Literacy
Xingran pursues learning independently before gaining access to a suitable teacher.
- Accumulates questions through private study and asks for guidance after class 49.
- Writes an answer to help Yingcheng during a lesson, overlooking that she is supposedly too young to read it 49.
Coordination and Deception
- Coordinates attacks with Lin Jinshu and places the wooden stick in Lin Jingshan’s hand when adults approach, helping disguise the actual course of the fight 108.
- Leads the Cold Palace exploration and signals Sheng Shixu to guard the rear of the group 229.
- Communicates a diversion-and-rescue plan to Sheng through gestures and eye movements during Chi Yimian’s attack 249.
- Plans to make an attack on Rou and Luo Fuying appear accidental, though successful execution is not established in the supplied passage 251.

- Luo Fuying — Companion in the Cold Palace incident and target of Yingcheng’s concealed scheme. Xingran avoids supporting her false accusation against Huai’an; during the later attack, he considers using her position to create an apparently accidental strike against both her and Rou 228 237 251.
- Lin Jingshan and Lin Yelei — Opponents at the Lin residence. Xingran defeats them with Lin Jinshu’s assistance and helps make them appear to be the aggressors 108.
