Ch. 341The shock of civilization
Kosa and sixteen other boys from Border Guard Village toured Red Tide City and moved into warm, well-equipped housing, leaving Kosa shaken by the contrast with his home. Louis learned that the first small-scale implementation of the Civilization Lighthouse Plan had succeeded, and Halom reaffirmed his loyalty to him.
- Halom guided Kosa, Besha, and the other boys through Red Tide City's clean streets, Government Hall, and orderly South Market, where Kosa noticed residents treated Halom with respect.
- The boys arrived at the Third Ring Residential District and inspected their warm, well-equipped shared house, while Kosa remembered the hardships of his family's home and wondered whether his mother might be healthier there.
- The boys ate bread, cheese, and cured meat, and Kosa began to feel relieved that life in Red Tide might be less humiliating than he had expected.
- Halom reported to Louis that all seventeen boys had completed registration and settled in, and that their tour had begun to give them a sense of identification with Red Tide.
- Louis praised Halom and said his example showed that barbarians were people too, while Bradley noted the success of the Civilization Lighthouse Plan's first small-scale implementation.
