Getting out of the Rebirth Well was no easy task either. When Hu Xiaotian had entered, the Evil Monk Unenlightened had thrown him down. Now he had to climb out under his own power. The well was wide at the bottom and narrow at the top, making the ascent considerably harder than climbing straight up a vertical shaft. Using both hands and feet, Hu Xiaotian clung to the wall and climbed with the Golden Spider Eight Steps. The footwork Quan Dean had taught him proved extremely useful, ideally suited to scaling walls and slipping into houses. In modern society, Hu Xiaotian would certainly have ranked among the very best rock climbers.
He climbed all the way to the rim in one go, then cautiously crouched there and peered outside. Rain was still falling, and everything around him was pitch-black. It was probably still the middle of the night. Hu Xiaotian had no idea where he actually was. Only after making certain there was no one around the Rebirth Stele did he dare climb out. Despite his extraordinary eyesight, he could not see a single light anywhere. He seemed to be in a valley, but he did not know whether he had left Cloudsplit Valley.
Dark clouds blanketed the sky, hiding every star and leaving him unable to get his bearings. Wild grass covered the ground, with no path to be found. Hu Xiaotian could only trust his instincts and head uphill. His plan was to reach the summit first, then get a clear view
