Background / History

Origin and rise to power

An ancient god of war accidentally left the Kongtong Seal in the lower realm after completing his tribulations. The artifact fell into the Netherworld Flame at the bottom of the Sea of No Delusion and gradually developed a human form. Mingyuan emerged during a war roughly four hundred years before the main story, defeated the existing Demon Venerable and his ten protectors, and was acknowledged as ruler by the demonic cultivators 8.

The human cultivators and demons subsequently allied to eliminate him, but their campaign failed despite heavy losses. Mingyuan did not become a tyrant: he avoided harming innocents, restrained his subordinates, and mainly sought challenges against powerful cultivators 8.

Suppression of the Hundred Ghosts

Four centuries earlier, the Hundred Ghosts attacked Mingyuan and were defeated. They then preyed on cultivators and mortals throughout the Eastern Sea’s Twelve Islands. At the island lords’ request, Mingyuan captured them and imprisoned them beneath Ghost-Crying Island. The lords suppressed the incident in historical records to conceal their humiliation; the island later sank in an earthquake before resurfacing during the main story 127.

Childhood encounter with Ning Xiang

Ning Xiang rescued Mingyuan from the seabed as a child and gave him milk tea. In return, he gave her a Teng Snake tendon and advice concerning iron essence. She later recalls this encounter while fighting beside him on Ghost-Crying Island. Mingyuan also cites their sixteen-year acquaintance when competing with Yu Tingchao over who knows her better 139 156.

Appearance

Mingyuan has a tall, imposing build and strikingly handsome features, with an unrestrained air that does not come across as crude 130.

  • Height: Well over 190 centimeters in his initial description 8.
  • Build: Broad-chested and muscular, with sharply defined abdominal muscles 8 62.
  • Eyes: Deep and clear, retaining a carefree quality without visible traces of hardship 228.
  • Clothing: Wears black during his confrontation with Zhu Yu outside Danyang City 58.
  • Later condition: Ning Xiang discovers that he has lost his sight when she finds him in the Ten Thousand Demons Cave 227.

Personality

Mingyuan is swaggering, competitive, and eager to fight worthy opponents. He describes fighting as his only hobby and initially imagines taking Ning Xiang as a disciple so they could someday challenge the cultivation world together. His appetite for combat coexists with restraint toward ordinary people and strict control over wrongdoing among his followers 8 9 11.

His courtship is earnest but frequently misguided. He turns Ning Xiang’s admiring gaze into an offer to spar, insists on daily training, and gives her a chest of technical books rather than the jewelry others expect. When supplied with a courting guide, he attempts flowers, homemade breakfast, and a candlelit dinner 152 153 155.

His affection also makes him jealous and possessive. He deletes other men’s messages while Ning Xiang sleeps and repeatedly fights her admirers. Nevertheless, he shows practical tenderness by treating her injuries, caring for her when she is drunk, and placing her safety above his own—even when he believes saving her will cost his life 138 152 160 228.

  • Recognizes Lu Qingchen’s Paper Spirit Art 9.
  • Explains the Soul-Devouring Whip’s effects on the ravine beneath Reflection Cliff 9.
  • Identifies ghosts depicted in the Hundred Ghosts Compendium 126.
  • Explains that the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation derives from the Demon-Subduing Sword Formation 162.
