Background / History
Su Lang belongs to the Su family, whose close friendship with the Zhou family made him and Zhou Ruoxue childhood companions. In the original novel known to Ning Xiang, Zhou Ruoxue loves him, becomes jealous of Jiang Miaomiao, and eventually dies by his spell; this is a predicted storyline, not an event shown occurring in the current timeline 27.
When Ning Xiang first arrived at Solitary Light Peak as a child, Lu Qingchen entrusted her care to Su Lang because he had no experience looking after children. Su Lang cared for her well and remained patient despite her spoiled temper and fixation on their master 13 44.
Ten years before the current expedition, Su Lang and Ning Xiang trained together in Thousand Calamities Valley. He placed first, while she placed second. Zhou Ruoxue later recalls that he obtained three second-tier beast cores on the first day of that trial 24 26.
Nine Shao Gate and Family Loss
Su Lang’s family history is tied to the massacre at Nine Shao Gate. As a child, he rescued a little girl dressed in crimson from a dungeon. When he took her to find his mother, he witnessed demon cultivators slaughtering his family. His mother and maternal grandfather’s family became the subjects of a blood-deep grievance, and the sight of their blood haunted his dreams for years 97.
The girl was Ning Xiang, who had been abducted by the Great Demon Hooked Snake at age six. Her parents subsequently arranged for her memories of the massacre to be erased. Su Lang did not initially connect the traumatized girl from Nine Shao Gate with his lively, pampered junior sister, despite their similar age and red clothing. Shaowei’s explanation finally allows him to recognize them as the same person 77 78.
The Nine Splendors Phoenix-Felling Flute belonged to his family and was lost when demons slaughtered his uncle’s household. A later investigation concludes that the Great Demons attacked the household twenty-one years earlier to obtain the flute and the Nine-Shao Melody score 77 104.
Within half a year of becoming Lu Qingchen’s disciple, Su Lang gained both Ning Xiang and Xie Feihong as fellow disciples. Xie Feihong had lost his father, a cultivator from neighboring Reflection Shadow Peak, in a battle against a Great Demon. Su Lang later recognizes that Ning Xiang’s unruly, lively presence helped him endure his own grief 78.
Childhood Bond and Erased Memories
Ning Xiang’s recovered memories show that Su Lang repeatedly protected and comforted her during childhood. He shielded her from freezing snowmelt, stayed beside her until dawn when she was frightened in the restricted Library, and became the model for the calligraphy she diligently copied 111.
Their earlier closeness was disrupted when Ning Xiang turned twelve. The Main System threatened to erase her if she loved anyone other than Lu Qingchen, and for six months she suffered severe pain whenever she felt happy around Su Lang. By the time she returned from the Eastern Sea at thirteen, she had forgotten their shared experiences and behaved according to the prescribed villainess role 111.
Su Lang remembers her becoming cold toward him and trembling when he approached. Hearing her later thoughts about these changes leads him to suspect that she has lost memories. Despite the estrangement, he continued to believe that she would eventually return to his side 113 220.
Former Divine Life
Su Lang is the reincarnation of True Lord Xi Jing, the Star Lord of the Moon Mansion. He and Ning Xiang, formerly Yinghuo, had known and accompanied each other for more than twenty thousand years. Their senior-brother and junior-sister relationship, as well as their connection to their master, predated their mortal lives 218 220.
Six thousand years before the present conflict, Xi Jing and Ning Xiang sacrificed themselves in the Immortal-Demon War to help form the Demon-Subduing Sword Formation that sealed Demon God Houqing 215 218.
In another remembered episode, the Heavenly Emperor sent Xi Jing to inspect the Northern Region eight hundred and seventy-six years earlier. On returning, he learned that Yinghuo had supposedly fallen into demonhood and killed herself to atone. Refusing to accept this account, he used the Azure Lotus Hooked Jade and his own Divine Soul to gather any surviving remnants of hers. He remembers failing and perishing, but does not know how they were subsequently able to reincarnate 220.
Marriage, Other Worlds, and Later Family
Ning Xiang’s recovered history reveals that she and Su Lang had already married and traveled together before a catastrophe brought them to another world during the Demon Moon. During that three-month stay, she wrote a novel based on her cultivation-life experiences. A modern girl named Jiang Miaomiao later altered that story, entangling Ning Xiang in its fanfiction and repeated reincarnations 218.
Su Lang also recalls wearing bridal robes when he and Ning Xiang married on Ghost-Crying Island. During their later modern-world stay, they agree to marry again properly and exchange vows during a wedding photo shoot 222 223.
The later family side story shows them back in the Cultivation Realm with their thirteen-year-old son, Su Tingyun. Su Lang has taken on a substantial share of the children’s instruction and personally teaches Tingyun talisman drawing 234.
Appearance
- Build and bearing: Tall and elegant, with a composed, refined manner repeatedly compared to jade 13 39 42.
- Face: Ink-like brows, sharply sculpted temples, a finely shaped nose, and quiet, dark eyes 13 29.
- Hair: Raven-black 29.
- Clothing: Wears blue-green robes in his first on-page meeting with Ning Xiang 13.
- Visible strain: Becomes noticeably thinner during the eight days he spends searching for the missing Ning Xiang 143.
- Modern-world appearance: Retains his refined, jade-like bearing even while openly fascinated by unfamiliar cars and traffic 220.
Personality
Su Lang is the exemplary eldest disciple of Solitary Light Peak: attentive in lessons, dependable in danger, and notably steadier than his fellow disciples. Lu Qingchen regards him as a standard the others should aspire to, while Ning Xiang considers him the most trustworthy member of their expedition 6 16 24 32.
His courtesy does not mean indiscriminate warmth. He gently corrects Zhou Ruoxue when she credits him for Ning Xiang’s work, but maintains a deliberate distance from her flirtation. When she seeks his support against Ning Xiang, he instead backs his junior sister 25 26.
Around Ning Xiang, his restraint gives way to tenderness, bashfulness, and occasional jealousy. He indulges her theatrical requests for comfort, becomes flustered by her teasing, and tolerates her mischief when he sees that it makes her happy. His sharper side emerges when he blocks her view of other handsome cultivators or removes Yu Tingchao to obtain time alone with her 28 29 30 34.
His attachment is expressed through sustained practical care as much as dramatic rescues. He applies medicine to a minor scrape, plays the flute until Ning Xiang sleeps, tends to her fever for five days in the modern world, and later remains deeply affected by her casual affection even after years of marriage 111 221 234.
Su Lang’s gentlemanly restraint is especially clear when Ning Xiang is drunk: although tempted by her advances, he refuses to take advantage of her vulnerability, carries her ashore, and dries her hair. As their relationship becomes openly mutual, he grows more confident in initiating affection and occasionally answers her teasing with teasing of his own 145 221 223.
He is not blindly bound by his reputation for uprightness. When the revived Fu Yunsheng tries to provoke him into a duel by wagering Ning Xiang’s freedom, Su Lang instead calls on Ning Hui to attack together and end the confrontation quickly 123.
Honesty becomes a point of tension between his protective intentions and Ning Xiang’s trust. He admits to her sleeping form that he has lied, despite her insistence that he never would. Later, he falsely promises not to sacrifice himself in the Demon-Subduing Sword Formation, hoping to spare her grief while also wishing she will remember him 137 216.
In the modern world, he proves intelligent and eager to learn, quickly mastering basic internet use. His unfamiliarity with household technology nevertheless produces accidents, and his attempt to bake Ning Xiang a cake reflects a lingering wish to make up for disappointing her in childhood 219.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship and Demon Suppression
Su Lang wields Langhua, a sword specifically made to subdue demons and vanquish fiends 31.

- Destroys the demon’s exposed Undying Heart with a thrust of moonlike sword light 32.
- Exposes a Ghost-Faced Ape hiding under the appearance of a Pill Sect cultivator 33.
- Attempts to sever the vine abducting Ning Xiang, but cannot strike freely when it hides behind her 32.
- Devours Fu Yunsheng’s black-and-red demonic blood mist with Langhua’s Sword Qi. The sword’s demon-suppressing power grows with Su Lang’s cultivation 123.
- Channels spiritual energy into Langhua to strike the core of a hostile formation 125.
- Keeps vengeful ghosts from approaching and uses the sword’s spiritual light to break Zhou Ruoxue’s fascination with mind-bewitching murals 128.
- Fights alongside Ning Xiang with coordinated Sword Qi against attacking demon beasts 139.
- Transforms Sword Qi into countless Jade Bamboo Leaves that surround the Thunder Qilin, then enter its flesh as spiritual light and inflict severe pain 143.
- Uses Langhua’s cleansing radiance to cut through demon cultivators and demon beasts while taking the exhausted Ning Xiang away from battle 183.
- Drives grasping undead hands back into the ground in the Returning Ruins 193.
- Defends against the Undying Divine Tree’s powerful leaf formations, though the leaves repeatedly regroup and threaten to exhaust his spiritual power 194.
Hearing Ning Xiang’s Thoughts
Su Lang can hear Ning Xiang’s unspoken thoughts, allowing him to recognize motives she conceals behind her outward behavior 34 39.
- Learns that her claimed injury is an excuse to avoid Lu Qingchen after the expedition 34.
- Reacts to her private speculation that he is romantically interested in Yu Tingchao 39.
- Assures her that he will not betray her trust after she privately expresses confidence in his protection 32.
- His flute playing falters when she privately admires him and wonders about kissing him 111.
- Realizes that her unexplained childhood estrangement may have resulted from memory loss after hearing her thoughts about it 113.
- Hears her reflections on an embarrassing proposal to Mingyuan and quietly plays along with her attempts to make amends 197.
In their modern-world reunion, Ning Xiang discovers that she can hear Su Lang’s affectionate inner thoughts as well, creating a reversal of their earlier dynamic 218.
Spiritual Techniques and Talisman Use
- Spiritual sense: Monitors Ning Xiang while walking ahead and slows down so she can keep pace 26.
- Voice transmission: Privately instructs her to evacuate the weaker cultivators while he confronts a third-tier beast 26.
- Sword flight: Carries the injured Xie Feihong away on Langhua and later uses it to leave the underground maze 14 32.
- Immobilization: Restrains Yu Tingchao with an Immobilization Talisman before placing him outside on the ship’s deck 34.
- Talisman study: Asks Ning Xiang to teach him talisman drawing and subsequently receives evening lessons from her 34 42.
- Wind Riding: Uses the technique within Ning Xiang’s spiritual terrace when rushing toward her dream-self 115.
- Paper doubles: Works with Ning Xiang to create convincing replacements for their imprisoned group and the captured guards 122.
- Earth-Digging Talismans: Helps attempt an underground escape, which fails because restrictions surround the cell 122.
- Form-Swapping Talisman: Secretly attaches one to Ning Xiang before she crosses the dangerous bone bridge at Gloomy Rain Crossing, intending to take her place if necessary 191.
- Talisman instruction: Later teaches his son Su Tingyun to draw talismans, with Ning Xiang assisting 234.
Divine Soul Techniques
Su Lang can send his soul into another person’s spiritual terrace. When Ning Xiang cannot be awakened, he presses his forehead to hers and enters her inner world to find her. Their subsequent kisses take place within that dream rather than through an ordinary physical encounter 115 116.
His Divine Soul can be repaired through mingling with Ning Xiang’s. After the Thunder Qilin battle leaves him unconscious, she guides and restores his soul; he instinctively seeks renewed contact when she withdraws 143 144.
In his former divine life, Xi Jing used his own Divine Soul as a guide for the Azure Lotus Hooked Jade in an unsuccessful attempt to recover Yinghuo’s scattered soul 220.
Music and Mental Calming
- Plays the Nine Splendors Phoenix-Felling Flute and its Nine-Shao Melody to help calm cultivators affected by the wider crisis; the group arranges for the music to be transmitted to them 104.
- Uses the flute to dispel restlessness and intrusive romantic thoughts on Ghost-Crying Island 134.
- Plays for Ning Xiang until she falls asleep 111.
- His music is interrupted by the crash and surge of demonic energy that reveal the Eastern Sea’s worsening condition 107.
Demon-Subduing Sword Formation
Su Lang informs Ning Xiang that the Profound Heaven Sect has reconstructed the Demon-Subduing Sword Formation from a preserved rubbing of its manual. Activation requires a core, and Qin Ge explains that only someone with a Jade Spirit Body can fill that role 215 216.
Su Lang takes the central position when confronting the Ghost Lord and traps him within the formation. Langhua radiates sacred light across the devastated ground. Ning Xiang breaks free of Qin Ge, joins Su Lang, and supplies her accumulated divine power, allowing the formation to destroy the Ghost Lord and the Demon God 217 218.
Knowledge of Demons
- Identifies the Heaven-Splitting Python from the Earth-Fiend Demon Lion’s description, recognizing it as one of the Demon King’s four guardians 27.
- Knows that the sect previously sent a Nascent Soul cultivator to investigate the guardian’s disappearance without finding any trace 33.
- Suggests that the python’s remains disrupted Thousand Calamities Valley’s formations, and that collecting them allowed the formations to recover 34.
- Has fought Fu Yunsheng many times and knows that his greatest dangers are underhanded methods and unusually treacherous spirit beasts rather than cultivation alone 91.
- Recognizes the possibility that his group has reached the Eastern Sea’s legendary thirteenth island 128.
- Identifies the dangerous whirlpool leading into the Returning Ruins and shares Ning Xiang’s deduction that the fire-associated Scenery Gate is the correct route near the Mars Star Lord’s palace 193.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Langhua Sword — His treasured weapon, used for combat, demon detection, and flight. Its Sword Qi grows stronger with his cultivation and suppresses demonic energy and ghosts 14 31 32 33 123 128.
- Jade Glow Pearl — Illuminates the underground maze after he follows Ning Xiang into it 32.
- Storage Ring — Offers to store the Heaven-Splitting Python’s bones for Ning Xiang 33.
- Azure Lotus Jade Pendant — Worn by him for years and intended for his future wife. He gives it to Ning Xiang before the Purple Tenuity Domain journey. It glows during the blood-red Demon Moon at the formation’s destruction and again as their modern-world stay ends 41 218 223.
- Jade flute / Nine Splendors Phoenix-Felling Flute — Receives it from Ning Xiang as a reciprocal parting gift and promises to play it for her. He later identifies it as the family heirloom lost in the massacre of his uncle’s household. It is used to perform the mind-calming Nine-Shao Melody, and later shields him from a fifth-tier demon beast, cracking as a green-dressed woman appears 42 77 104 134 139.
- Demon-Binding Rope — Uses it to capture the demon cultivators guarding the group’s cell while Ning Xiang distracts them 122.
- South-Pointing Compass — Consults it after the group is transported away from the Twelve Islands 128.
- Talismans from Ning Xiang — Keeps Flowing Fire, Liuding Heavenly Armor, and Spirit-Hiding Talismans she gave him; he refuses to give them away to Zhou Ruoxue 128.
- Defensive formation from Yu Tingchao — Gives it to Zhou Ruoxue instead of parting with Ning Xiang’s talismans. It manifests as a conspicuous pink lotus beneath their feet 128.
- Folding fan — Draws poisonous vapor from a Bladeworm Ghost into the fan, protecting Ning Xiang 135.
- Profound Spirit Brush — A green bamboo brush associated with the Void-Inquiring Sect. It condenses objects from spiritual energy, allowing him to draw an enormous net over demon beasts 139.
- Form-Swapping Talisman — Places it on Ning Xiang as a safeguard before the Gloomy Rain Crossing bridge trial 191.
- Azure Lotus Hooked Jade — Divine artifact used in his former life as Xi Jing to seek remnants of Yinghuo’s soul 220.
- Modern-world identities and funds — The system provides him and Ning Xiang with legal identities, money, and their Cultivation Realm possessions after their arrival in the modern world 218.
- Wedding photographs — Takes them with Ning Xiang during their modern-world stay and plans to display them after returning to the Cultivation Realm 222 223.
Relationships
- Lu Qingchen — Master. Trusts Su Lang with Ning Xiang’s childhood care and later assigns him expedition-protection duties; Su Lang reports the valley’s events to him. Their relationship also develops romantic tension around Ning Xiang: Lu reacts coldly to her closeness with Su Lang and is visibly jealous when he finds them holding hands 16 35 44 51.
- Ning Xiang — Junior sister whom he helped raise. His growing affection includes classroom assistance, physical protection, private companionship, and the gift of a pendant meant for his future wife. She repeatedly mistakes his care for ordinary fellowship or a scheme involving Jiang Miaomiao. Later developments restore their suppressed childhood bond, reveal their former divine companionship, and establish them as spouses in Su Lang’s side-story ending and the later family story 16 32 34 41 44 111 220 222 223 234.
- Xie Feihong — Junior brother and training companion. Su Lang encourages him to concentrate and takes him away to rest after he injures his back. Both entered their early sect life while grieving family losses 14 78.
- Yu Tingchao — Junior brother and rival for Ning Xiang’s attention. Su Lang rescues him when he emerges from underground, but later forcibly separates him from Ning Xiang and questions him about their festival outing. Their rivalry continues through sparring and attempts to monopolize Ning Xiang’s company. Nevertheless, Su Lang joins the search for the Undying Fruit because Tingchao is his junior brother too 28 34 39 109 112 113 193 194.
- Zhou Ruoxue — Childhood companion and admirer. He does not reciprocate her flirtation in the depicted encounters; she eventually redirects her admiration toward Ning Xiang and apologizes to him. By the Spirit Fighting Tournament, she has stopped loving Su Lang and grown close to Bai Yueguang. Su Heming later remarks that she pursued Su Lang for more than a decade 25 27 40 91 190.
- Jiang Miaomiao — Junior sister. Instead of becoming jealous when Ning Xiang displays their exchanged gifts, she enthusiastically endorses Ning Xiang and Su Lang as a couple. She also objects to Su Heming’s suggestion that Su Lang marry simply to produce an heir. The modern girl of the same name who altered Ning Xiang’s novel is a distinct figure from their cultivation-world companion 50 186 218 223.
- Su Heming — Father. Provides the information linking the Undying Fruit and Kongtong Seal to the possibility of rescuing Tingchao. He presses Su Lang to marry and continue the family line, prompting Su Lang to end their calls. Su Lang eventually admits that there is already someone he likes 186 190.
- Su Tingyun — Son with Ning Xiang and her eldest child. At thirteen, he is diligent and capable; Su Lang teaches him talisman drawing and takes an active role in his upbringing 234.
- Ning Pingzhang and Mu Fang’ai — Ning Xiang’s parents. Their decision to erase her childhood trauma concealed her connection to Su Lang’s family tragedy. Mu Fang’ai once feared that Su Lang’s presence could revive those memories. Su Lang later interrogates the Hooked Snake alongside Ning Pingzhang 78 99.
- Fu Yunsheng — Repeated opponent whose family is at odds with the Su family. In Ning Xiang’s knowledge of the original novel, jealousy over Zhou Ruoxue makes him a major enemy of Su Lang. In the current timeline, Su Lang refuses his revived challenge to a duel and helps Ning Xiang and Ning Hui kill him together 91 123.
- Zhu Yu — Rival for Ning Xiang’s attention. Su Lang confronts him with Langhua after Ning Xiang returns to human form and resents his claims of intimacy with her. He and Yu Tingchao later blame Zhu Yu for leading her astray rather than faulting Ning Xiang 67 125.
- Mingyuan — Another powerful rival whose protection of Ning Xiang Su Lang accepts reluctantly. Mingyuan restrains the injured Su Lang from immediately resuming his search for her, and later accompanies her on the journey into the past while Su Lang remains to help the sect and Void Palace 140 197.
- Qin Ge — Su Lang asks him to remove Ning Xiang to safety before the sacrificial formation activates. In his recovered divine memories, Su Lang identifies Qin Ge with Star Lord Chonghua, whom he regards as another admirer of Yinghuo 217 220.
- Hundred Ghosts King — Warns him to leave Ghost-Crying Island because the Ghost Lord’s followers are approaching, explains part of the Ghost Lord’s history, and suggests that Ning Xiang’s missing strand of Divine Soul may still survive 137.
- Hooked Snake — Enemy connected to Ning Xiang’s childhood abduction and the slaughter of Su Lang’s relatives. Seeing him again reawakens Su Lang’s grief and desire for vengeance 78 97 99.
Romantic Development with Ning Xiang
Su Lang’s feelings precede Ning Xiang’s conscious recognition of them. Their recovered childhood history shows that she once admired him and copied his handwriting, but supernatural punishment and memory erasure prevented that affection from developing freely. In the present timeline, her restored memories and repeated experiences of his care gradually undermine her belief that he dislikes her 32 111 113.
Their first newly depicted mutual kisses occur after he enters her spiritual terrace to wake her. She believes she is freely acting within a dream, while he becomes flustered by her initiative. Later, she repairs his injured Divine Soul, and at the Spirit Spring he openly declares that she is the only person in his heart. She responds affectionately, although her drunkenness initially leaves him uncertain how to interpret her advances 115 116 144.
Their bond is tested by mutual efforts to prevent the other’s sacrifice. Before her journey with Mingyuan, Su Lang promises a large betrothal gift if she returns safely. When the Demon-Subduing Sword Formation becomes necessary, Ning Xiang forbids him to sacrifice himself and renders him unconscious to keep him from acting. He nevertheless returns to battle and arranges for Qin Ge to take her away; she breaks free and chooses to stand beside him 197 216 217 218.
The modern-world side story turns their reunion into openly shared domestic and romantic life. They plan activities, care for one another during illness, agree to marry again, exchange vows, and prepare to return to the Cultivation Realm together. Ning Xiang’s symptoms and Su Lang’s private pulse examination imply a pregnancy, while the later family story explicitly establishes their son Su Tingyun 219 220 221 222 223 234.
