In Sunny Village, a few kilometers from the slaughterhouse, Li Fenglong was stamping his feet in the courtyard in a panic. "This guy was obviously trying to scam us! Are you two idiots?"
Wu Li came out of the kitchen and ignored him, handing the heated electric hot-water bag to her husband instead. "Dongzi, tuck this under his quilt in a bit. Make sure there's some clothing between it and his skin."
Li Donghu raised a hand to take it, but his younger brother suddenly darted over and threw the hot-water bag to the ground. "You're seriously going to save this guy?! Look at him-he's practically dead! What are we supposed to say when the doctors at the hospital start asking questions?"
Without a word, Li Donghu turned and went into the inner room. Wu Li bent down to pick up the hot-water bag and wiped off the dust. "What do we say? What else could we say? He passed out by the roadside, so we brought him in."
"He didn't pass out by the roadside! He saw my brother's vehicle coming and deliberately threw himself under the wheels." Frantic and furious, Li Fenglong's face flushed red. "If I hadn't thought fast and covered him with the felt blanket we use for the cargo, the camera at the village entrance would've caught my brother bringing him back. And you still want to save him? If anyone finds out, our whole family will end up in prison!"
Wu Li's hands paused. Then she turned away and went back to wiping down the cargo bed of the three-wheeler. "Oh, now you've got all the answers. Your brother wanted to call the police at the time. Why did you stop him?"
