Under a sea of shocked and probing gazes, Shen Mu Lan followed Ji Yanzhi out of the Finance Department.
Only after they disappeared into the elevator did the frozen air in the office seem to circulate again. Every gaze, whether discreet or direct, turned in unison toward Manager Wang, who was still standing rigidly in place.
Now this was going to be interesting.
Who could have imagined that the seemingly mild-mannered Supervisor Shen had been appointed directly by the Chairman?
Manager Wang's heart pounded wildly. He felt as though he were being roasted over a fire, his face alternating between pale and ashen. His mind was consumed by one thought: I'm done for. Will Shen Mu Lan tell Director Ji every last detail about how I sidelined him and gave him the cold shoulder this morning? If he does, how will Director Ji deal with me?
If... if Shen Mu Lan hasn't tattled, could a sincere apology this afternoon calm him down?
His thoughts were a tangled mess, his emotions veering between hot and cold. He regretted it bitterly.
Whatever internal struggle he was going through, most of his colleagues were eager to watch the drama unfold. They headed to the Staff Dining Room in twos and threes, itching to share this astonishing gossip.
Inside the elevator, Shen Mu Lan stole a glance at Ji Yanzhi with an exceedingly odd look. He looked away, then glanced at him again two seconds later.
"What are you looking at?" Ji Yanzhi asked coldly, his eyes fixed ahead.
"I, you..." Shen Mu Lan frowned. "Weren't you the one who repeatedly warned me to pretend I didn't know you if I saw you at work? Not to come near you, and definitely not to talk to you? What exactly are you playing at now?"
