Background / History

Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan were Jiraiya’s students and founded the Akatsuki to bring peace to the Land of Rain. Its early members helped civilians through wars, earning a growing reputation before reports of the organization’s destruction led Jiraiya to believe his students had died 78.

Hanzō later lured the group into an ambush under the pretext of an alliance. With Konan held hostage, he ordered Nagato to kill Yahiko or allow her to die. Yahiko instead threw himself onto the kunai in Nagato’s hand, sacrificing his life for Konan. Nagato subsequently learned that Konoha’s Root, commanded by Shimura Danzō, had participated in the ambush 80.

Yahiko’s death convinced Nagato that ideals could not protect anyone without sufficient power. As Pain, he uses Yahiko’s body to represent the Akatsuki and pursues peace by forcing the nations to experience overwhelming suffering 30 78 80.

Appearance

  • Short orange hair and Yahiko’s recognizable face distinguish the Deva Path 33 78.
  • Pale purple Rinnegan, patterned with concentric rings, are his most conspicuous feature 33.
  • Black rods embedded in his face accompany the body’s distinctive eyes 33 35.
  • An Akatsuki red-cloud cloak is worn by the Deva Path and the other Paths 78 79.

Personality

Pain presents himself as cold, composed, and authoritative. He considers himself a god and treats strength as the necessary foundation of any lasting ideal. His rejection of negotiation stems from Yahiko’s death: without power behind them, he regards words as useless 38 78 79.

His leadership is nevertheless pragmatic. He recruits Cangyue after the boy defeats Hidan and Kakuzu, tolerates his disrespect, and permits him to retain his Konoha affiliation because his combat strength outweighs the cost of sharing unimportant intelligence. Pain explicitly rejects the idea that Akatsuki needs only obedient tools 33 40 41.

His impassive exterior does not eliminate personal attachments. He evacuates Amegakure’s civilians before fighting Jiraiya and is briefly moved when his former teacher expresses concern for his suffering. He also becomes privately unsettled by Cangyue and Konan’s exchanged rings, interpreting them as possible evidence of closeness 55 78 80.

Abilities & Skills

Rinnegan and the Six Paths of Pain

Nagato controls multiple bodies bearing identical Rinnegan, allowing them to fight as a coordinated unit 78 79.

  • Shared vision: Each Path contributes its field of view, covering most blind spots and making surprise attacks difficult 78 79.
  • Complementary abilities: The Deva Path controls the enemy’s position, the Asura Path pressures them with weapons, and the Naraka Path restores damaged bodies 79.
  • Environmental limits: Buildings and alleys can obstruct their sight. Jiraiya uses this cover to isolate and ambush two Paths 78.
  • Ocular limitation: Nagato is not the original owner of the Rinnegan. He can use Six Paths abilities but cannot unlock Madara’s exclusive ocular technique 73.
Path Documented Ability Demonstration
Deva Path Attraction, repulsion, and gravitational flight Uses Shinra Tensei and Banshō Ten’in against Cangyue and Jiraiya; can fly through gravity manipulation 37 78 81
Animal Path Summoning Summons a giant bird to carry itself and the Human Path out of Jiraiya’s flames 79
Human Path Participates in the shared-vision pursuit Is trapped alongside the Animal Path, destroyed, and subsequently restored; no distinct offensive technique is shown in this encounter 78 79
Asura Path Mechanical weaponry and physical defense Unfolds missile-launching components from its wrist and blocks Jiraiya’s punch with a metallic impact 79
Naraka Path Restoration through the King of Hell Returns the charred Animal and Human Paths to an unharmed state 79

Shinra Tensei

The Deva Path releases an invisible repulsive force capable of throwing enemies, weapons, rubble, and attacks away 37 78.

  • Repels Cangyue’s coordinated sword attacks and blasts him out of the shrine 37 38.
  • Disperses Jiraiya’s hardened hair and a flame-enhanced Rasengan 78.
  • Has a basic interval of approximately five seconds, which Cangyue exploits with staggered attacks 37.
  • Is not an absolute defense: Cangyue withstands an initial blast by bracing his crossed swords against the floor 37.

Banshō Ten’in

The Deva Path applies gravitational attraction to forcibly reposition a target 37 78.

  • Pulls Cangyue toward a black rod aimed at his heart 37.
  • Draws in surrounding rubble together with the target 38.
  • Redirects Jiraiya’s approach so that his Rasengan strikes a nearby tower instead 78.
  • Can be exploited by a fast opponent: Cangyue accelerates with the pull rather than resisting it 38.

Chibaku Tensei

Pain begins using Chibaku Tensei during his confrontation with Cangyue after the attack on Sunagakure 64.

  • The technique produces a gathering gravitational force beside Pain 65.
  • Konan intervenes before the clash develops, and Pain allows the force to subside 65.
  • Its completed effect is not demonstrated in this encounter 65.

Rain Tiger at Will Technique

Pain extends his senses through chakra-infused rain covering Amegakure 36.

  • Detects Cangyue when he crosses the border and tracks the rain-free space surrounding him 35 36.
  • Detects Jiraiya immediately upon his entry into the village 78.
  • Provides surveillance without requiring Pain to be physically present at the intrusion point 36.

Holographic Projection and Communication

Pain communicates remotely through Akatsuki rings and gathers dispersed members through holographic meetings 30 33 38.

  • Receives urgent chakra pulses identifying Hidan and Kakuzu’s distress signal 30.
  • Projects himself onto their battlefield to assess the damage and negotiate with Cangyue 33.
  • Uses projections to convene members who cannot return from their missions 38.
  • The projected figure has no physical body or actual chakra pathways 33.

Chakra Observation

Pain uses the Rinnegan to inspect chakra activity closely enough to verify Cangyue’s Dream Training 46.

  • Confirms that Deidara’s cells continue refining chakra during deep sleep 46.
  • Recognizes the process as training rather than ordinary recovery 46.
  • His decision not to intervene reassures other members that the unfamiliar technique appears safe to try 46.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black rods — Used to parry sword attacks, strike opponents, and threaten vital points at close range. Pain also throws a rod that pins Hidan to the floor 37 38 55.
  • Akatsuki ring — Receives chakra-based communications and supports remote projection 30 33.
  • Akatsuki cloak — Red-cloud uniform worn by the Pain bodies 78 79.

Relationships

  • Nagato — Controller and voice behind Pain. His real body must relocate when the Deva Path travels from Amegakure to Konoha 78 80 81.
  • Yahiko — Deceased friend whose body becomes the Deva Path. Yahiko’s sacrifice shapes Nagato’s conviction that peace requires overwhelming power 78 80.
  • Konan — Trusted partner who supports Yahiko’s hoped-for peaceful world, manages Akatsuki logistics, and repeatedly prevents Pain’s clashes with Cangyue from destroying their surroundings 30 42 38 65.
  • Cangyue / Kambara Sogetsu — Recruited asset, openly acknowledged Konoha spy, and eventual designated successor. Pain increasingly recognizes that Cangyue’s strength exceeds his ability to control him 33 40 67 79.
  • Jiraiya — Former teacher. Their reunion begins as a battle but becomes a discussion of Yahiko’s death after Cangyue intervenes 78 79 80.
  • Tobi / Obito Uchiha — Covert collaborator who investigates Cangyue. He cautions Pain against alienating the swordsman after their near-clash 41 65.
  • Hidan and Kakuzu — Subordinates whose defeat brings Cangyue to Pain’s attention. Pain disciplines Hidan and authorizes organizational payment for his repairs 30 33 55 75.
  • Shimura Danzō — Revenge target identified as the Root commander involved in the ambush that caused Yahiko’s death 80.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Nine-Tails jinchūriki whom Pain plans to assess during the Konoha visit. Pain later shakes his hand while supporting the group’s wildlife-protection cover story 76 87.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Akatsuki’s Preparations

  • Distributes quarterly contracts covering bounty hunts and assignments intended to provoke wars 30.
  • Uses years of mercenary work to build reputation, intelligence, and operational channels; collecting the tailed beasts remains the organization’s true objective 30.
  • Orders members to conceal that objective and avoid provoking a joint investigation by the Five Great Shinobi Villages 45.

Recruiting Cangyue

  • Offers Cangyue membership after witnessing Hidan’s severed arm and Kakuzu’s destroyed heart through a projection 33.
  • Tests him in person, reaching a three-way standoff involving Cangyue’s sword, Pain’s rod, and Konan’s paper blades 37 38.
  • Accepts him provisionally, restricts access to core intelligence, and permits limited reporting to Konoha 39 40.
  • Assigns Tobi as his trial-mission partner and requires him to raise 10 million ryo within three days 45 47.
  • Witnesses the reality of Dream Training, only for the meeting to collapse into a mass sleeping session 46.

Sunagakure and the Leadership Shift

  • Assigns Cangyue to demonstrate Akatsuki’s strength against a powerful target, explicitly distinguishing the task from assassinating the Fourth Kazekage 60.
  • Becomes furious when Cangyue’s public victory exposes Akatsuki to the great nations’ scrutiny 64.
  • Accelerates preparations to capture the tailed beasts, while accepting Konan’s suggestion that Cangyue could serve as an alternative source of overwhelming power 65.
  • Promotes Cangyue to Special Member, names him Akatsuki’s next leader, and grants benefits equal to his own 67.

Jiraiya’s Investigation

  • Confronts Jiraiya in Amegakure, warns him to leave, and deploys additional Paths when the Sannin begins discerning his abilities 78.
  • Overwhelms Jiraiya through coordinated attacks and restoration, but cannot resist Cangyue’s battlefield-wide time stop 79.
  • Reveals Hanzō and Root’s role in Yahiko’s death, then declares his intention to punish Danzō personally 80.
  • Hears Cangyue propose disguising Danzō’s death as a heroic sacrifice rather than openly declaring war on Konoha 80.

Konoha Chunin Exams Visit

  • Approves the Akatsuki’s trip as an opportunity to investigate Konoha’s defenses and the Nine-Tails jinchūriki 76.
  • Allows non-core intelligence deliveries to outside villages despite the increasingly open espionage within the group 77.
  • Insists on carriage travel to preserve Akatsuki’s dignity and arrives later with Konan; Nagato’s real body and the other Paths are implied to be concealed nearby 81 86.
  • Enters Konoha after a paperwork dispute at the gate is resolved, then joins Cangyue’s introductions to Naruto and the other young ninja 86 87.

Trivia

  • Pain’s objection to Cangyue’s Sunagakure victory concerns lost secrecy, not the defeat itself; Nagato believes the Six Paths could also destroy a hidden village 64.
  • He refuses Cangyue’s offered handshake after accepting his dual affiliation, but later shakes Naruto’s hand while maintaining the wildlife-protection story 40 87.
  • In Itachi’s alternate-life dream, Pain’s Six Paths absorb Ōnoki’s Dust Release during a coalition war. This occurs within the dream, not the main storyline 84.
