Background / History
Uchiha Loss and Revenge
Sasuke seeks revenge against Itachi, whom he identifies as the man who destroyed the Uchiha clan in a single night. He initially treats developing the Sharingan as the central path toward closing the gap between them 22.
His lost home life remains emotionally significant. A meal at Cangyue’s house recalls the taste of his late mother’s cooking, although he keeps that response private 21.
Academy and First Spar
When Sogetsu transfers into Iruka’s class, Sasuke dismisses him as a poser while privately recognizing a confidence resembling his own. Sogetsu’s academic answers and precise combat demonstrations gradually turn that interest into wariness 1 2 3.
At a riverside picnic, Sasuke punches Naruto after Naruto asks him to act as the “hammer” in a literal interpretation of Cangyue’s sword-forging metaphor. He later challenges Cangyue directly, preferring a practical test of skill to more philosophical explanations 7.
Cangyue lends him the Flame Sword for the spar and evades every attack. Sasuke’s frustration culminates in a demand for a head-on exchange, but Cangyue stops the blade with lightning and blasts him backward. Even awakening the Sharingan cannot prevent his defeat: Cangyue strikes him with the sword’s flat and briefly immobilizes him with lightning senbon while avoiding serious injury. Sasuke grudgingly acknowledges his strength 8 9.
Training Beyond the Sharingan
Naruto’s improvement draws Sasuke’s attention, first through his changed classroom behavior and later through his chakra-control demonstration. Sasuke follows Cangyue through the market to question him about the supposed “Dream Training” method 17 19 21.
After feeding Sasuke and Ino, Cangyue gives Sasuke a wooden sword and a blindfold. He offers to lend him the Flame Sword for a month if Sasuke can touch him once. Sasuke denies wanting to become his student but accepts the exercise 21.
Misleading sounds repeatedly expose Sasuke’s impatience and dependence on sight. When he tries to stop, Cangyue challenges him to consider what remains of his strength without the Sharingan. Sasuke tightens the blindfold and continues, eventually sensing a silent attack. He comes to understand the training as a foundation that can complement his eyes rather than replace them 22.
Over the ten days before graduation, Sasuke repeatedly visits Cangyue with his blindfold and wooden sword. After becoming a genin, he invites Cangyue to join his team; Cangyue refuses. Sasuke is assigned to Team 7 with Naruto and Sakura under Kakashi 29.
Land of Waves
Sasuke continues blindfolded practice while escorting Tazuna. During the Demon Brothers’ ambush, he kills one attacker with decisive swordsmanship, prompting Kakashi to recognize how sharply his danger perception has improved. After Tazuna admits that Gato’s pursuit makes the mission more dangerous than advertised, Sasuke and Naruto insist on continuing 47 48.
Against Zabuza, Sasuke forces himself through overwhelming killing intent because retreating from fear would undermine his ambition to confront Itachi. His nonvisual perception counters the Hidden Mist, but Zabuza’s superior strength, speed, and experience eventually force him onto the defensive. Sasuke removes his blindfold and activates the Sharingan to renew the fight; White Mask’s arrival interrupts the confrontation before a decisive outcome 50.
Appearance
- Eyes: Normally black; turn scarlet with one black tomoe in each eye when his Sharingan first awakens 9.
- Training blindfold: A black cloth used to shut out sight during practice, later worn while traveling and fighting 21 22 47 48.
- Mission equipment: Carries an iron sword on his back during the Land of Waves escort 47.
Personality
Sasuke is proud, guarded, and easily irritated by perceived condescension. He initially scoffs at Sogetsu’s theatrics, then becomes increasingly angry when Cangyue evades his attacks while repeatedly sighing. Nevertheless, he can acknowledge an opponent’s strength after losing 1 8 9.
His actions often reveal respect that he refuses to express openly. He denies seeking Cangyue’s instruction but returns regularly for lessons, quietly helps wash dishes after dinner, and later asks Cangyue to join his team 21 29.
Revenge drives his ambition, but training gradually makes him more patient and self-critical. He learns to ignore irrelevant sounds instead of immediately attacking them, and recognizes the danger of defining all his power through inherited eyes. His determination also enables him to advance despite Zabuza’s killing intent 22 50.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
An ocular ability awakened under emotional pressure during his spar with Cangyue 9.
- Makes an opponent’s movements, breathing, and chakra flow substantially clearer 9.
- Tracks Cangyue’s position even when Sasuke cannot react quickly enough to defend himself 9.
- Improves his ability to intercept and evade Zabuza’s attacks after removing his blindfold 50.
- Does not eliminate differences in physical speed, strength, or combat experience 9 50.
Swordsmanship
Developed through basic instruction and repeated blindfolded practice with Cangyue 21 29.
- Uses chops, sweeps, thrusts, rising cuts, and changes of footwork during his first spar 8.
- Conceals an attack’s trajectory with his body before delivering a diagonal upward slash 9.
- Combines sword attacks with close-range strikes, including knees and kicks 48 50.
- Develops troublesome attack angles that challenge Zabuza despite his still-immature technique 50.
Nonvisual Perception
Trains to locate threats without depending exclusively on sight or the Sharingan 22.
- Uses sound, airflow, and instinctive awareness of danger 29.
- Interprets Cangyue’s lesson as learning to detect hostile intent, killing intent, and chakra changes before an attack 22.
- Can navigate normally while blindfolded and respond to a lethal ambush 47 48.
- Uses sound and killing intent to locate Zabuza, undermining the concealment provided by Hidden Mist 50.
- Early attempts are vulnerable to deceptive noises; successful perception does not guarantee enough strength to block an attack 22.
