One thing needed explaining here: the Scout Boats of this era were different from modern reconnaissance aircraft.

They had neither the powerful radar nor the various detection systems of modern reconnaissance aircraft. They did not look like Airships, either, but more like actual dirigibles.

After all, the primary purpose of a Scout Boat was high-altitude reconnaissance, but its usefulness was actually quite limited.

As mentioned before, the Scout Boats of this era did not have much high-tech equipment. They carried very little: just one camera and three large ground-observation telescopes, positioned at the front, middle, and rear of the vessel. These looked somewhat like submarine periscopes, except that submarine periscopes were mounted on top, while the telescopes on Scout Boats were mounted underneath.

Simply put, a Scout Boat's main function was to first photograph the entire battlefield from high altitude, giving headquarters a clear understanding of the terrain and establishing the locations of certain buildings. Then the crew would use the observation telescopes to conduct a relatively detailed second survey. Ideally, this would allow them to pinpoint important targets or buildings.

Thus, Scout Boats were quite useful on open plains and in naval battles, but their usefulness declined considerably in mountainous environments with dense vegetation like this.
