The Elevators in the Lun Mine were different from those elsewhere.

Rather than a single Elevator running straight to the bottom, they were arranged in stages. After all, the Lun Mine kept getting deeper as excavation continued, and it was impossible to extend the Elevators while digging. Generally, each Elevator shaft served several dozen levels, with tracks then carrying the car over to another shaft.

Of course, not just anyone could use the Elevators. Unlike freight trains, their carrying capacity was very limited, so only those who actually controlled each level were allowed to use them. This also meant that the area around an Elevator was the safest place on any given level.

Conversely, if even the area around the Elevator had fallen, the rest of that level was pretty much... well, the outcome was predictable.

Standing inside the cramped Elevator, Li Wei stared down into the seemingly bottomless mine pit. Even with searchlights illuminating his surroundings as brightly as daylight, the bottom still looked pitch-black. It was as though dense shadows had plugged the top of the pit, preventing even the brightest light from piercing that darkness.

Li Wei also saw quite a few people in the tunnels on either side. Most were miners, standing there blankly like the living dead. Some clung to one another and wept, while others desperately reached out toward him, seemingly yearning for something.

It was practically hell on earth.

Still, this was relatively good. At least there were living people here.

There was not a single person in sight. Only the sound of the Elevator echoed through the deathly silent mine pit, followed by the Zombies it attracted. Just like those in movies and games, they let out low, beastlike moans, then hammered
