Experience had long since led Li Wei to a conclusion.
Whenever people wanted to do something secret, they liked to hide underground to do it. Good or bad, everyone seemed to independently decide that somewhere underground was the best place to hide their secrets.
"Looks like whenever I find a place suspicious from now on, I should just look for the basement."
Walking into the basement, Li Wei spun the key in his hand and grumbled in exasperation. He had lost count of how many times he had run into trouble underground, including the Underground Catacombs beneath the Holy Lord Cathedral, the secret chamber beneath the sanatorium...
Oh, right. Military Intelligence Section Seven's own secret base was underground too.
I'll have to do things differently in the future. At the very least, I'm definitely not putting a secret base underground.
After silently making that vow, Li Wei turned his attention ahead-or rather, what lay ahead was precisely what had set off his internal complaints.
After all, this basement was unusual too.
The basements beneath churches were usually crypts. Perhaps because this Chapel had been built on school grounds, however, its basement was not a crypt.
Instead, it was... a prison.
That was right. It looked just like a prison, with thick iron bars sealing off room after room. Under the dim light, the sight was deeply unsettling.
"You really do things differently here. What's the idea behind putting a prison under a chapel?"
Li Wei turned to the nun beside him, who offered a deeply embarrassed explanation.
"It's meant to discipline unruly students. If they break the school rules, they're locked up here so they can reflect on their mistakes and acknowledge them-but very few people are ever sent here."
Well, damn. Literally locking them in a dark little room.
