Things like this actually happened quite often in horror movies.
The protagonists ventured into remote, ancient ruins, broke a seal, and released a terrifying monster. Then the monster hunted them down, until they finally escaped with their lives.
And often, it wasn't that the monsters were particularly powerful. It was simply that... the protagonists were too weak.
Some protagonists brought nothing but hiking and archaeological equipment, without so much as a gun. Forget monsters-even a bear or a wolf would send them fleeing in a screaming panic.
That was what people meant when they said fear came from insufficient firepower.
That principle actually applied to most biological monsters.
Li Wei stopped and looked at the residential district before him, which had already been reduced to rubble.
Then there was the charred, motionless corpse of the monster, and the fellow beside it.
"Wh... why... my lord..."
The Bandaged Man was now utterly unrecognizable. His lower body had been blown to pieces, and his upper body was scorched black. At that moment, he was using almost the last of his strength to crawl desperately toward the monster.
"Because it wasn't that powerful."
At the sound of Li Wei's voice, the man stopped and turned to look at him, his eyes full of confusion.
"Why..."
"As I said, times change."
Li Wei looked at the charred remains before him and shrugged.
"In the past, humans might genuinely have had no way to deal with a monster like this. All they had were muskets, bows, and cannons. Those things couldn't hurt a monster high up in the sky. And this fellow seemed to have psychic abilities too, didn't it? Yes, people back then might have worshipped and treated it as some kind of god."
"In the past..."
"That's right. In the past."
