In religion, the struggle between gods and demons was an eternal theme. Just as there could be no darkness without light, no death without life, and no evil without justice, where there were gods, there were naturally demons.
The Holy Scripture of the Holy Lord Church also contained accounts of demons.
According to the Holy Scripture, the Holy Lord had defeated the other gods and gained authority over creation. However, not all the gods had submitted willingly. Some fugitive gods, along with the followers of gods slain by the Holy Lord, had hidden in a dark underground realm, forever waiting to make their comeback and reclaim the world that belonged to them.
Li Wei had to admit, the Holy Lord Church had a rather unusual take on this. Generally speaking, religious doctrines attributed bad things to demons and good things to gods. If you were depraved, unrestrained, or addicted to pleasure, that made you a symbol of sin, evil, and impurity. You were possessed by demons, a mouthpiece for the devil, and so on and so forth.
The god you worshipped, by contrast, was just, kind, great, pure, blah blah blah.
But the Holy Lord Church was different. According to its teachings, the world's present order, good or bad, had been created by the Holy Lord. It was just like the story Sister Elizabeth had told Li Wei while they were investigating the Plague Child. The Pope of the Holy Lord Church at the time had said that thunder and rain alike were divine grace. Either the Holy Lord was rewarding you, testing you, or punishing you.
And the demons in this account were not the sort that tempted humanity into corruption to challenge God's authority. They were more like rebels seeking to overthrow the existing order and reclaim the
