The mountain road was treacherous at night, narrow and unlit, with an uneven surface. Even Li Wei felt his nerves fraying behind the wheel. Yet Mrs. Nicole had not slowed down at all. She drove like a professional racer tearing around the XX Mountain course-though, to Li Wei, perhaps she had simply stopped caring whether she lived or died. Perhaps she even thought death would be preferable.
Well, quite a few women seemed to have this problem with letting their emotions get the better of them. Once they lost their heads, they wanted to punish other people by hurting themselves. Li Wei could not understand that behavior, but he had seen it plenty of times. One incident that had left a particularly deep impression was when he had taken his girlfriend onto the highway. They had started arguing over something that, to him, was utterly trivial. Then she had lost her temper, lunged for his steering wheel, and declared that they might as well die together.
Terrified, Li Wei had hurriedly pulled over, but that had not been the end of it. He had intended to yell at her, yet she had refused to let the matter drop. She had opened the door, rushed outside, and stood in the middle of the highway with her arms spread, looking as though she were daring someone to run her over.
