Financially speaking, the money flowing in and out of Uncle Hank's Kellida Steam Mechanics was fairly normal. The company simply did not make much profit. That was normal enough, too. It was much like the rush into private business in the eighties and nineties: everyone wanted to start a business and become a big boss, but very few actually managed to build large companies. The rest either struggled to survive or went bankrupt and packed it in.

Kellida Steam Mechanics fell into the category of companies currently struggling to survive. After all, its services largely overlapped with those of the surrounding shops. It relied entirely on support from regular customers, mostly making ends meet through mechanical modifications and repairs.

Most steam machinery shops were like that these days, though, offering repairs, modifications, and manufacturing all under one roof. It was a rough-and-ready stage of development. In a few years, however, things would inevitably become more organized. They could not keep operating like little street-side workshops forever.

Uncle Hank clearly understood that, too, which was why he wanted to use this opportunity to establish himself properly.

Of course, that was impossible without money.
