When the hunting party returned, the whole village bustled as though it were New Year's.
Leading the way, the Charlie brothers strutted along with their chests out and heads high, carrying a thick wooden pole with an enormous, pitch-black beast lashed to it. The others followed beside them, brimming with excitement.
"This is the damned monster!"
The hunting party dumped the monster on the ground, then shouted at the top of their lungs.
"It's huge, but it's a coward! It might be a terrifying killer at night, but in daylight, it's just a particularly vicious beast!"
"Whoa..."
The villagers crowded around with cries of amazement, and Li Wei stepped forward to examine the enormous monster.
It was about as big as Li Wei had expected, so massive that it had taken eight members of the hunting party to carry it. It looked something like a cross between a gorilla and a wolf, with a powerful upper body and a somewhat scrawny lower half. Its head had a wolf's long muzzle, and inside its open mouth, he could even see a scarlet tongue and rows of vicious teeth.
What interested Li Wei most, however, were the monster's claws. Its paws were broad and enormous, tipped with sharp claws the size of daggers. Judging by their shape and the marks they would leave, they did indeed match the wounds on the victims.
But... this was far too quick.
