Ever since the Space Marines who had followed Lox from the Red Alert into the X-Men universe gradually awakened, Lox had begun rebuilding the Astartes Legions.

Because of the Emperor's Compass's limitations, Lox had only brought ten of the most outstanding Astartes, along with four hundred and ninety battle-hardened veterans. Together, they formed a miniature Chapter of five hundred men.

During the Great Crusade era, an Astartes Legion's company or Chapter numbered a thousand Astartes. The five hundred Lox had brought amounted, at most, to a seed.

Lox needed to use those five hundred as a framework, supplement them with the other gene-seed he had brought, as well as pure genetic material extracted from the Primarch stock, and rebuild an Astartes Legion capable of delivering the decisive blow.

However, Lox had no intention of rebuilding the Legion according to the old model, where each Legion was distinguished by its gene-seed and operated independently.

From Macragge to Terra, he had already gathered a mixed Legion under his command, centered around veteran survivors of Isstvan V.

The warriors of the three crippled Legions—the Iron Hands, Raven Guard, and Salamanders—had worked together seamlessly and displayed unimaginable power.

The strength born from that cooperation had even surpassed the limits each Legion could reach fighting alone.

Lox had begun exploring the benefits of this mixed-force model back then.

Compared with the highly specialized independent Legions of old, mixed Astartes forces could adapt to more unexpected circumstances, make up for their weaknesses, and perform even more effectively.

Mixed Astartes formations were the inevitable trend. Naturally, Lox needed to keep experimenting and seek new breakthroughs.

Secondly, Lox had already foreseen what would happen if the Legions continued developing as independent entities.

By then, more than half of all Astartes would likely be using Ultramarines gene-seed.
