The conversation with Curze lasted only a few minutes before Guilliman and Lion returned to the surface.
Konrad was a prisoner, and solitude was his punishment.
Although the Night Haunter's condition had improved somewhat, Guilliman would not lower his guard against Konrad over such a minor sign. No one knew whether this was merely an act he had put on to escape.
They had all suffered from Konrad's cunning before. They could not possibly allow him to slip out of control again.
"I think some of Curze's words are still worth considering, my brother," Guilliman said to Lion.
"He said Vulkan would die and be reborn, and that he would remain at the Emperor's side, becoming our father's final safeguard."
"That means he will return to life, though we do not know how it will happen."
Lion looked utterly disdainful. He did not believe a single word that came from Konrad's mouth. They were the most malicious of lies, poison disguised in falsehood.
Only a fool with a naïve mind like Guilliman's would seriously consider and believe that nonsense.
"Roboute, I am the Emperor's most loyal son. If he truly has some ultimate contingency, then I will be the one to carry it out. I will remain at the Emperor's side until the final moment arrives."
"I am Lion El'Jonson, lord of the First Legion, the backup for every crisis, and the most loyal of sons."
Lion spoke with extreme seriousness, enunciating every word.
"I have no intention of arguing with you over that. Russ says the same thing, after all. I suggest the two of you have another fight when you meet." Guilliman made a small joke to lighten the mood, then continued.
"I intend to return Vulkan's body to his sons. I will tell them everything that happened.
