Their food requirements naturally had nothing to do with offerings. Even without eating, they could survive by absorbing certain yin energies in their surroundings, which were especially abundant in graveyards and other unusual environments.
They could also absorb soul essence. Living humans, animals, and even plants possessed it, though in varying quantities.
Their appetites were actually quite small. Draining a few small animals, such as poultry, was enough to fill them up. Feeding on humans would, at most, leave an ordinary person mentally drained. If an Evolver lowered their mental defenses and willingly let a ghost feed, they would barely be affected at all.
Because human souls were inherently stronger, a ghost that killed someone for this purpose could absorb a large amount of soul essence in a short time. But it could digest only a tiny fraction of that. The rest would linger for a while before dissipating, and during that period, the ghost's entire being would become somewhat contaminated, leaving its thoughts even more confused.
The frightening part was that, after recovering, ghosts whose thinking was already impaired might find the sensation exhilarating. Repeated often enough, it could even become addictive.
One of the cases discovered in Russia had been exactly like that. The ghost in question had been dead for less than two weeks, yet it had already killed five people by various means.
It had attacked some directly and interfered with others while they were driving.
