Background / History
Childhood and Name
Shi Chun’s parents did not know their ancestral surname or origins. Because he was born in spring, they named him simply Chun. As a half-grown boy in the Eastern Nine Plains, he learned to read from a beautiful exiled woman who taught several local boys during a stay of about three years 1.
After she departed, he adopted Shi, the word for “teacher,” as his surname in gratitude. The resulting name invited the mocking pun sichun, “yearning for love”; he repeatedly fought people over it. He also gave Jinliang the surname Wu, producing the joke “no weight” 1 2.
Chief of the Eastern Nine Plains
Shi Chun served as Chief for years, treating the position as a responsibility to preserve his followers’ strength and keep them out of avoidable danger. His authority rested partly on surviving dangerous ventures with his people intact 299.
His conflict with Shen Youkun began when the arrogant exile provoked the Eastern Nine Plains. Rather than accept Shen’s claims of powerful connections, Shi Chun placed him under house arrest, provided food and drink, and required him to contact his family through the city gate. Shen initially failed to substantiate his background, but the dispute later left Shi Chun and Wu Jinliang fearing retaliation 3.
Appearance
- Dark complexion: Shi Chun describes himself as dark-skinned and recalls being insulted as visibly lowborn. He later becomes noticeably fairer 125 658 671.
- Handsome features: His looks, controlled movements, and composed bearing distinguish him even when he dresses shabbily as an ordinary worker 480 484.
- Attention to grooming: He buys and applies a “skin-whitening” mixture that turns his face startlingly white. He is also openly confident in his appearance around women 54 560.
- Changing facial hair: Imprisonment leaves his hair and beard tangled. He initially keeps the long beard after release, but Bian Weiying later shaves it off 660 664 667.
- Disguises: Uses masks, a veiled hat, altered facial appearance, and a beard to conceal his identity. One disguise can be peeled away like old skin 351 552 560 572.
- Mount Wukang clothing: Continues wearing the sect’s clothing after his affiliation changes, dismissing objections with “The clothes are innocent” 247.
Personality
Shi Chun is pragmatic, observant, and unwilling to fight merely for appearances. He studies opponents before committing, values useful countermeasures over elegance, and often turns deception or negotiation into a substitute for direct confrontation. Against an unknown pursuer, he argues that there is no benefit in risking a fight before someone else has tested the enemy’s strength 180 247 678 679.
His loyalty can look like indifference. He protects Wangbo Tower from involvement in a murder dispute and later refuses to meet his former Eastern Nine Plains comrades because association with him could make them targets. He accepts their public abuse rather than explain a situation that might draw them further into danger 52 206.
That protectiveness coexists with calculated exploitation and extreme violence. He uses captives as cultivation resources, kills prisoners he considers unsafe to retain, and murders a wounded cellmate to conceal his absorption of demonic essence. His conduct toward women also includes unwanted touching, strategic romantic flattery, and sexual aggression toward Xiang Lan’er 87 154 248 475 562 660.
He enjoys books, jokes, and theatrical self-presentation: he practices grand declarations from Shanhai Lantern, exchanges extravagant compliments, and turns social encounters into opportunities for useful connections. Twenty years in prison make him more reserved and less flirtatious, but do not erase his resourcefulness or attachment to his childhood teacher 54 248 479 665 671.
Abilities & Skills
Demon-Bathing Art
Shi Chun’s cultivation art absorbs demonic energy, but its internal manifestation is an azure lotus, not the demonic flame he observes in other practitioners. This discrepancy makes him question whether his cultivation truly belongs to the Demonic Path 91.
- Energy absorption: Uses demonic qi to treat his cultivation-blocking poison and extracts Sun Shigang’s demonic flame directly from his dantian 86 87.
- Rapid cultivation: Refines absorbed demonic essence into strength; Xia Fuli’s essence is rich enough that a small fraction carries him into upper attainment 234 367.
- Supply dependence: Without further demonic qi, his cultivation can stall again 91.
- Killing-aura absorption: Absorbs the dark-red aura generated by combat, experiencing intense pleasure while his facial scars heal 165.
- Body protection: At upper attainment, spreads azure-wave qi throughout his body. Jin Hao’s palm strike fails to move him 356.
- Lightning protection: Li Hongjiu’s Thunder Sword passes through him without injury and instead accelerates the refinement of his stored essence 367.
Right-Eye Ability
His unusual right eye reveals energies and supernatural structures invisible to ordinary sight. At his Advanced Martial breakthrough, he discovers a hazy purple phenomenon extending from his spine toward his head that consumes blood energy 86.
- Cultivation inspection: Sees human silhouettes, law sources, demonic flames, and differences in magical power. These observations also help him identify disguised acquaintances 86 87 504 666.
- Spell analysis: Detects the Suyuan Sect’s invisible threads and summoned swordsmen, allowing him to predict attacks from changes in their arrangement 151 152 180.
- Vision through concealment: Remains useful in white powder, mist, and the sensory darkness produced by magical treasures 180 358 616.
- Hidden-entity detection: Sees killing aura, the phoenix-like Monster Bird, and Yu Xuanbing’s mistlike surveillance double 165 620.
- Blood-energy cost: Deliberately supplying blood energy prevents activation pain; repeated use still causes weakness when his reserves cannot recover quickly enough 86 105.
- Uncertain interpretation: Seeing a phenomenon does not automatically tell him what it means. He remains puzzled by the lotus and initially misjudges aspects of the Red-Clad Woman’s cultivation 91 562.
Demonic-Blight-Free Saber
The saber technique taught by Uncle Eight produces explosive force far beyond what its outward movements suggest. Uncle Eight had never reached Advanced Martial and could not explain its full power, leaving Shi Chun to test it himself 91.
- Explosive impact: A strike using approximately thirty percent of his strength disarms Wu Jinliang, numbs his hand, and tears the skin between his thumb and forefinger. A later test blasts a room-sized crater into a canyon wall 91.
- Destruction beyond a conventional cut: One opponent explodes into pieces rather than being neatly cleaved apart 95.
- Domain disruption: When channeling the Demon-Bathing Art, cuts the otherwise uncuttable threads supporting Suyuan Sect techniques 152 179 180.
- Area defense: Destroys Mulan Qingqing’s twelve Silverglow Assassins amid erupted earth, stones, and white mist 180.
Demon-Undoing Hand
His signature palm technique delivers a strange destructive force capable of overwhelming stronger opponents 95 501.
- Internal destructive force: An opponent struck in the palm feels the power invade his arm and cause pain seemingly reaching his soul 95.
- Rapidly multiplying power: Li Hongjiu cannot fully redirect its force with Borrowed Realm and suffers a severe injury. Studying the encounter later helps Li identify a flaw in his own technique 369.
- Imitation is possible: Wu Jinliang reproduces the move through the Myriad Forms Art after repeated sparring and observation, though the imitation differs from Shi Chun’s original 501.
Immobilization Technique
Shi Chun develops this technique from the faint-blue substance left behind when Mount Wukang collects Deep Blue Bamboo. Discarded talisman paper preserves the substance; a medicinal solution converts it into material with the binding effect of an Immobilizing Talisman 231.
- Stored supply: Has twelve large stone gourds made, processes the material inside them, and later gives six gourds to Wu Jinliang 231 233.
- Adjustable dosage: A thumbnail-sized lump is roughly equivalent to a Third-Rank Immobilization Talisman and sufficient for an Advanced Martial target 233.
- Concealed deployment: Can immobilize an opponent without visibly producing a talisman; he uses this to trap Wu Shanshan while pretending to struggle against her 358 359.
- Artifact restraint: Immobilizes most swords released by the Extreme Fire Sect’s fifth-grade flying-sword treasure, then uses the suspended weapons as a platform 361.
- Counters: Demonic qi and divine-fire arts can break the effect, making speed essential against opponents who possess them 343.
- Finite resources: Its effectiveness depends on the quantity of prepared material available 361.
Regeneration
- Battlefield recovery: Absorbing killing aura rapidly heals his facial scars 165.
- Near-instant wound closure: Small cuts inflicted by Mulan Qingqing heal almost immediately. Shi Chun suspects this enhanced recovery comes from the Monster Bird, but does not establish the cause 180.
- Improved endurance: His increased resilience makes repeated use of the blood-consuming right-eye ability more manageable 175.
Divine Fire Detection
- Secret search method: Possesses an effective method for locating divine fire, making him a target for the major artifact-refining sects 336 342 424.
- Information control: Leaks useful search information through Xu Anchang while concealing the extent of his own method 336.
- Solo reconnaissance: Scouts alone so he can use his right-eye ability discreetly 271.
- Limited refining knowledge: His ability to find divine fire does not make him an artifact-refining expert; he asks others to explain unfamiliar refining procedures 256 455.
Two-Realm Passage
- Travel between worlds: Uses Golden Thread to open a passage between the living world and the Nether Realm, transporting companions including Lao Changhai and Li Hongjiu 578 622.
- Route concealment: Destroys the Golden Thread bundle to close a passage and changes departure and arrival locations to avoid surveillance 578 622.
- Operational relocation: Moves soul-related dealings away from Wandering River once repeated removals attract attention, selecting Qiangyu Hall instead 582.
Leadership and Strategy
- Battlefield command: Leads a force of roughly three thousand during the Skyfall Meteor Assembly and coordinates intelligence through Xiang Lan’er’s contacts 161 165.
- Countermeasure preparation: Commissions white powder, exploits sight-dependent techniques, and uses a clothed stone decoy to draw Mulan Qingqing into an irreversible attack 180 181.
- Contingency planning: Gives allies instructions to support him if he gains the advantage and flee if he loses it 343.
- Surveillance evasion: Conceals his aura, changes identities, checks surroundings with his right eye, and detects the Red-Clad Woman’s tracking ring 573 578.
- Artifact combinations: Escapes encirclement by combining sensory suppression, ranged killing weapons, defensive treasures, and sandstorm cover 551.
