The girl was barely conscious. Water had flooded her nose, leaving it burning with pain. She struggled desperately to breathe and cough, but only muffled, hoarse sounds escaped her. Both hands flailed and clawed wildly on instinct.
One hand luckily caught a hard edge and clamped onto it for dear life. The other kept scrabbling.
Before she could steady herself, the support beneath her suddenly vanished.
She sank helplessly, and the icy River water closed over her head again.
She wanted to scream, but water poured down her throat, choking her until her vision went black.
Her wedding dress grew too heavy when soaked. She could neither lift her arms nor kick her legs. After a brief struggle, her strength gave out, and she sank inch by inch into deeper darkness. Black Snake had barely darted away when he sensed the faint breath of life behind him sinking again.
A flicker of hesitation crossed his vertical pupils. He twisted sharply and curved back through the water. A fierce churn of his tail sent an undercurrent surging upward, lifting the sinking girl.
That would not hold her up for long, but it was enough.
He continued to guard warily against the unfamiliar Demonic Beast. It neither gave way nor kept a safe distance, and showed no sign of weighing its chances.
Its hostility was certain. This was no chance encounter, though he did not know whether it was after him or the girl.
Just as he prepared to release his thunder force, he remembered the person behind him. An electric discharge would kill the Demonic Beast, but she would not survive either. She could not die-at least not in the River. If she had to die, she had to do it on shore.
What a headache...
