Whenever Mulan had a quiet place, he could immerse himself in highly efficient study. Perhaps this was one benefit of two souls becoming one, but it stemmed more from the immense pressure he faced.
As he read, Mulan felt as though his mind had cleared. He took notes from time to time. The next issue of Truth and Magic should soon be ready for editing and publication, and he had a few articles to publish in it himself.

A voice suddenly sounded in Mulan's mind. He knew it belonged to the elf that had shown no response since that night. He could only vaguely sense its presence, without knowing where it was, much less whether it was asleep.

Mulan answered the elf in his mind.
This is a dangerous power. I cannot directly dispel the magic on you, but perhaps I can transfer it to myself. Control magic has no effect on me. I imagine this should be no different.
Mulan felt a faint stir of interest.
Can you read my thoughts?
I cannot. I can only speak to you mind to mind like this with your permission. But I have not lost my awareness of the outside world. I can see it through your eyes-your notes, for example.
Mulan instinctively glanced at his notebook. It contained notes on things such as "substitutes," his preliminary ideas for countering the Strange Sorcery.
Just then, the doors to the Golden Hall opened. Mulan looked up toward the entrance. Walton had come in.
"Tsk, tsk. I wondered why I couldn't find you anywhere. Hiding here, just as I thought."
"Sir Walton, why do you think I'm here?"
Mulan closed his book and stood, his tone unfriendly. Walton approached him with a smile
