Several warships rounded the back of Saipan Island's enormous volcano. On the sea not far from them crouched a towering figure, his signature pale green sleep mask resting on his forehead. His hazy eyes made him look like a brown bear just waking from hibernation.
He spread his hand, dipping his five fingers just beneath the water. Emotionless words left his mouth, carrying a cloud of white frost...
Then the entire sea began to freeze around his fingers...
It only seemed slow because the sea was so vast. The ice itself spread anything but slowly...
"Get ashore! Hurry!"
"Ah! We're going to be frozen!"
"Get onto the island!"
The members of the Whitebeard Pirates who had just jumped into the sea to escape the magma panicked again, swimming frantically.
Despite their speed, many were still caught by the advancing ice. Freezing air entered their bodies through their airways, froze their internal organs, and, of course, ended their lives.
"Now we're really in trouble."
Vista looked at his comrades stranded on the ice, then glanced back at the Lava Giant radiating searing heat. He swallowed and spoke bitterly.
"Great Eruption!"
Before the pirates could even find their footing on the island, Akainu's attack followed them. An enormous fist of fire slammed toward them like a wall!

Having lost his naginata, Whitebeard could only coat his left hand in Armament Haki and his Devil Fruit ability, then meet the punch head-on with his own formidable strength!
Akainu's wall-like fist stopped as though it had struck a mirror. Then it suddenly burst apart from the center, scattering magma around Whitebeard.
