Ch. 21Battling the Snake God

Barn fought the Snake God after it attacked the Martial Arts Arena and killed Oriana, discovering it was a mutated Sea King. He defeated it with a final Asura technique, leaving the arena split in two and the creature dead.

  • The wounded Snake God broke into the Martial Arts Arena, ate Oriana, and sent the crowd fleeing while Aishi remained frozen in prayer.
  • Barn snapped Aishi out of her daze and sent her and the Kuja Guard to evacuate the crowd as he and Fitz faced the creature.
  • Barn used Mind's Eye and recognized the Snake God as a mutated Sea King, then restrained it and attacked with his sword techniques.
  • The Sea King struck Barn twice, but his Life Fruit healed his injuries and he charged back into battle.
  • Barn trapped the Sea King with ice and evil light, struck it with flames, and killed it with Asura Evil Light Slash.

Ch. 22Accidentally became a hero?

Barn defeated the Snake God and was honored as the Hero of Amazon Lily, ending the festival’s tradition of sacrifice. Aishi revealed that her older sister had been sacrificed the previous year, and Barn asked her to teach him Haki so he could protect more people.

  • Barn exhausted himself after killing the Snake God, and Gloriosa and Aishi found him unconscious in the ruined arena.
  • Gloriosa thanked Barn for saving Amazon Lily and insisted he accept the title of hero.
  • At a banquet, Gloriosa abolished the Snake God Festival’s sacrifice tradition, declared it a day of celebration, and awarded Barn a necklace made from the Snake God’s fangs.
  • Aishi told Barn that her older sister had been sacrificed the year before, then broke down and blamed him for arriving too late.
  • Barn apologized and asked Aishi to teach him Haki so he could protect more people, and she agreed.

Ch. 23O Sea, You're All Water!

Fifteen years after settling on Amazon Lily, Barn said farewell to Gloriosa, Aishi, and the island as the Kuja Pirates began their first voyage. He set out to sail freely, leaving the island behind with Fitz and the crew.

  • Hancock ran through the Royal Palace with a pirate flag, and Gloriosa and Aishi reminisced about the fifteen years since Barn arrived.
  • Barn told Gloriosa he might never return, then said he wanted to sail the sea and live freely.
  • On the day the Kuja Pirates set sail, Barn left Amazon Lily after fifteen years of training, having reached level 50 and mastered Mind's Eye and Haki.
  • Barn and Fitz waved goodbye as the Kuja Pirates departed, while Fitz's enormous animal followers wept on the Island Turtle.
  • Two Sea Serpents hatched from the Snake God's eggs pulled the Kuja Pirates' ship through the Calm Belt, and Barn recited, "O sea! You're all water!"

Ch. 24I'm not directionally challenged, I'm just blind!

Barn’s peaceful voyage with the Kuja Pirates took an unexpected turn when Fitz led him aboard Whitebeard’s ship, the Moby Dick. After the Kuja Pirates sailed away believing Barn had left them, Whitebeard and Marco found him fishing and learned how he had arrived.

  • Barn fished aboard the Kuja Pirate Ship while the crew sailed for two months and prepared to stop at Matru Port for supplies.
  • At the port, Barn had Nidai Kitetsu sharpened by the blacksmith Jax, who recognized the sword and returned it without trying to steal it.
  • Fitz became fascinated by the Moby Dick, led Barn aboard, and Barn fell asleep fishing at its stern.
  • Aishi assumed Barn had left without saying goodbye and ordered the Kuja Pirates to sail without him.
  • Marco found Fitz aboard the Moby Dick, and he and Whitebeard discovered Barn fishing at the stern.
  • Barn realized he had boarded the wrong ship and explained to Whitebeard that he was blind, not directionally challenged.

Ch. 25Who Did You Say You Were Going to Teach a Lesson?

Barn confronted Whitebeard and his commanders aboard the Moby Dick, defeating Marco and Vista before fighting Whitebeard to a draw. Whitebeard recognized Barn as the Evil Ghost, and Barn explained that the Life Fruit kept him young and that Kazaan the Wave Devil had cursed his left hand.

  • Barn used Mind's Eye to identify Whitebeard and the commanders aboard the ship, then warned that he might break too many things.
  • Marco charged Barn, but Barn's Murderous Intent Wave slowed him and an Armament-coated blow sent Marco crashing into the cabin.
  • Vista attacked with his swords, but Barn knocked him back, prompting Whitebeard to challenge Barn himself.
  • Barn traded blows with Whitebeard and unleashed several wave techniques, while Whitebeard countered with the Tremor-Tremor Fruit's power.
  • Barn trapped Whitebeard with Evil Light Wave Formation and struck with Asura Evil Light Slash, but Whitebeard broke through and met the attack; afterward, Whitebeard called the fight a draw and recognized Barn.
  • Barn told Whitebeard that the Life Fruit kept him young and that Kazaan the Wave Devil had thrust Barn's left hand into his heart, giving it its cursed power.

Ch. 26The conditions for Awakening

Barn stayed aboard Whitebeard’s ship and joined the crew’s welcome feast, where he reconciled with Marco and reflected on his lost Rumbar Pirates. Afterward, he discovered that his battle with Whitebeard had unlocked an Awakening quest item, leaving him with one of three sockets activated for Dark Sky Wave Eye.

  • Whitebeard announced that Barn would stay aboard his ship and arranged a welcome feast, while Marco worried Barn would take revenge on him.
  • At the feast, Marco apologized to Barn, who forgave him after Fitz pleaded on Marco’s behalf.
  • Barn told Whitebeard that a plague had wiped out his former crew and that he had spent twenty years training Haki on Amazon Lily.
  • Barn played Brook’s harmonica at the Lookout and remembered the Rumbar Pirates, then checked his system interface.
  • Barn found the Proof of the Strong in his mailbox and placed it on Dark Sky Wave Eye, turning one of its three sockets yellow.

Ch. 27Terrabreeze Coal?

Barn reconsidered his attachment to the past after Whitebeard encouraged him to embrace a new life. On a volcanic island, Barn discovered Terrabreeze Coal and urged Whitebeard to claim the island so he could gather it.

  • Whitebeard told Barn to let go of his burdens and try settling into a new life, and Barn thanked him.
  • The Moby Dick approached a volcanic island where the heat made the seawater boil.
  • Barn tripped ashore and discovered Terrabreeze Coal in his inventory’s Materials tab.
  • Barn recognized the coal as an Enchanter material and asked Whitebeard whether the island was unclaimed.
  • Whitebeard claimed the island at Barn’s request, and Barn excitedly ran off to collect the coal.

Ch. 28"Black Arm" Zephyr and Sengoku the Buddha!

Barn built a Reinforcement Machine in Whitebeard's storeroom while Sengoku and Zephyr led a Marine fleet to confront Whitebeard. As Zephyr overwhelmed Whitebeard's commanders, Barn arrived and stopped Zephyr's attack with the Nidai Kitetsu.

  • Marco told Whitebeard that Barn had been making something from scrap metal, and Whitebeard let Barn continue while getting Marco drunk.
  • Barn worked on his Reinforcement Machine in the storeroom, processing metal through his system so he could see it.
  • Sengoku and Zephyr arrived with a Marine fleet, and Whitebeard attacked the warships with the Tremor-Tremor Fruit before meeting them in battle.
  • Zephyr knocked Jozu, Vista, and Curiel aside with Armament Haki, while Sengoku transformed into a golden Buddha to fight Whitebeard.
  • Marco summoned Barn, who handed Fitz to Marco and went to the deck with the Nidai Kitetsu.
  • Barn intercepted Zephyr's punch aimed at Jozu, blocked it with his sword, and introduced himself as a pirate ready to fight.

Ch. 29A Master of Armament Haki

Barn fought Zephyr at Marineford, revealing himself as the notorious Barn the Demon, but Zephyr’s mastery of Armament Haki let him withstand Barn’s strongest attack and overpower him. As Whitebeard continued battling Sengoku, he urged Barn not to lose.

  • Zephyr questioned Barn’s identity, pushed him back with his strength, and explained that he had resigned as an Admiral after pirates killed his family.
  • Zephyr attacked Barn, who argued that good people could be found among pirates and corrupt ones among Marines, then dodged his repeated charges.
  • Barn trapped Zephyr with Evil Light Wave Formation and struck him with Asura Evil Light Slash, revealing his pale eyes and grotesque arm.
  • Sengoku recognized Barn the Demon and questioned Whitebeard, who said Barn was merely a guest aboard his ship.
  • Zephyr emerged unharmed, demonstrating his mastery of Armament Haki, and punched Barn hard enough to send him flying.
  • Whitebeard drove Sengoku back with his Devil Fruit Ability and encouraged Barn to keep fighting Zephyr.

Ch. 30Immovable Wisdom King

Barn defeated Zephyr with his Rippling Wave Slash and Immovable Wisdom King Formation, forcing Sengoku to retreat with the unconscious admiral. After Barn woke from a three-day recovery, Whitebeard read out his new 230-million-berry bounty and the name “Asura.”

  • Barn blocked Zephyr’s strike, broke through his Haki with Rippling Wave Slash, and trapped him in the Immovable Wisdom King Formation.
  • Sengoku caught the unconscious Zephyr and withdrew, leaving Whitebeard and Barn behind.
  • Barn collapsed from exhaustion and woke three days later in his cabin, surrounded by Whitebeard’s crew.
  • Whitebeard read Barn’s new bounty of 230 million and revealed his new name, “Asura.”

Ch. 31The Power of Reinforcement

Barn built a Reinforcement Machine and tested it on Whitebeard's great blade, successfully strengthening it. Whitebeard thanked him and returned the blade to Barn so it could be reinforced further, while Vista regretted refusing to lend his swords.

  • Marco and Vista discussed Barn's week-long work with the terrabreeze coal, and Vista said he had refused Barn's request to borrow his swords.
  • Barn asked Whitebeard for his trust and borrowed his great blade to test the Reinforcement Machine.
  • Barn used terrabreeze coal to reinforce Whitebeard's blade, which emerged with a faint white glow.
  • Whitebeard tested the blade's strength, learned Barn had reinforced it, and thanked him before handing it back for further reinforcement.
  • Vista regretted not lending Barn his swords, while Marco laughed at his disappointment.

Ch. 32Parting at the Sabaody Archipelago

Barn departed from the Whitebeard Pirates with Adam and Fitz, then visited Sengoku at the Marine camp to announce he was no longer a pirate. After leaving, Barn met Lia, a young blacksmith delivering a sword, and offered to accompany her.

  • Lia told Barn that her parents had vanished at sea and her grandfather had recently died, and Barn offered to go with her to deliver the sword.

Ch. 33Pirate King

Barn refused Sengoku’s demand to reinforce Marine weapons exclusively and continued serving customers at his smithy. Rayleigh brought Shanks and Buggy to meet Barn, and Roger arrived at the shop.

  • Barn told Sengoku he would reinforce weapons for anyone who could pay, and Sengoku left after ordering a troublesome Marine captain to come with him.
  • Barn demonstrated a successful reinforcement to a pirate, whose sword cut deeply into the testing stone.
  • Shanks asked Buggy for money to reinforce his sword, but Buggy refused.
  • Rayleigh explained Barn’s abilities and curse to Shanks and Buggy, then said they had come to meet him.
  • Roger arrived and greeted Shanks, who excitedly called him Captain.

Barn reunited with Crocus and learned that Roger had only three years left to live. Seeking the third Proof of the Strong needed for his awakening, Barn challenged Roger and woke after their fight with the proof in hand.

  • Barn reunited with Crocus, who told him that Laboon was still waiting and learned that Barn's former crew had died.
  • Crocus revealed that Roger could live for only three more years, and Barn left to pursue what he most needed to do.
  • Barn sent Shanks to his apprentice Adam to have Shanks's sword enhanced, then challenged Roger to a fight.
  • Rayleigh returned carrying the exhausted Barn and Roger, but kept the fight's outcome secret.
  • Barn woke beside Roger and confirmed that he had gained his third Proof of the Strong.

Ch. 35What Exactly Are You Planning?

Barn met Fisher Tiger and offered to help him free the slaves, then sent Adam, Lia, and Fitz to the East Blue to establish a Mercenary Guild. After they left, Barn told Fisher Tiger he knew about his plan and wanted to help.

  • Barn recognized the disguised Fisher Tiger in a bar on Island 44 and confirmed his identity.
  • Barn invited Fisher Tiger to his smithy, then asked Adam how much money the business had earned.
  • Barn ordered Adam to take Lia and Fitz to the East Blue, establish a Mercenary Guild with a billion Beli, and destroy the Reinforcement Machine before leaving.
  • Adam left the next day with Lia and Fitz after blowing up the machine, while Barn stayed behind with Fisher Tiger.
  • Barn called the Celestial Dragons parasites and told Fisher Tiger he knew he planned to free the slaves and could help him.

Ch. 36Freeing Slaves by the Thousands

Fisher Tiger and Barn freed the slaves held at Mary Geoise while Barn raided Saint Belikov’s treasury. With Sengoku and Garp arriving, Barn asked Tiger to take the treasure and a Demon Blade to Adam in the East Blue, while he stayed behind.

  • Tiger and Barn climbed into Mary Geoise, evaded the Marines, and opened the slaves’ cages.
  • Tiger set out to destroy the slave compound to help the captives escape, while Hancock led Barn to Saint Belikov’s treasury.
  • Barn killed Saint Belikov, took his Demon Blade, and began looting the treasury.
  • Sengoku learned that Barn had invaded Mary Geoise and ordered Garp to come with him.
  • Barn met Tiger with a huge bundle of treasure and asked him to deliver it and the sword to Adam in the East Blue.

Ch. 37Defeat?

Barn sent Fisher Tiger away with Hancock and her sisters, then fought Sengoku and Garp among the ruins of Mary Geoise. After weakening them with his awakened abilities, Barn exhausted himself with a final attack and passed out as Marines arrived.

  • Barn entrusted Demon Moon to Fisher Tiger and sent him away with Hancock and her sisters before confronting Sengoku and Garp.
  • Barn used Rippling Wave Slash to disrupt Sengoku’s Devil Fruit ability, but Sengoku and Garp worked together to exploit the gaps between Barn’s attacks and wound him.
  • The Life Fruit healed Barn after Sengoku’s punch, but the healing drained his stamina as the battle continued.
  • Barn trapped Sengoku and Garp in Dark Sky Wave Eye, then shattered the barrier with his Awakening’s second-stage effect.
  • The barrier exploded and Sengoku and Garp screamed, while Barn depleted his stamina and passed out; Marines arrived and found the Fleet Admiral and the others.

Ch. 38Days in Hell

Barn remained imprisoned in Impel Down as news of his capture spread, prompting his allies and friends to react while they built their own plans. After six months, Roger turned himself in and was scheduled for execution, and Barn’s cell door opened for the arrival of a newcomer.

  • Marco and Vista read that Barn had been captured by Garp and Sengoku, while Hancock, Adam, Lia, Fisher Tiger, Rayleigh, and Roger learned the news and mourned or worried for him.
  • Whitebeard refused his crew’s pleas to rescue Barn, saying it was not yet time, and Adam convinced Fisher Tiger to focus on building Barn’s mercenary guild and trust his promise to return.
  • Over the next six months, Roger reached Laugh Tale and became Pirate King, Fisher Tiger formed the Sun Pirates, and Adam established a powerful East Blue mercenary guild known as the White Hand.
  • Roger told Rayleigh he intended to turn himself in, partly because he wanted to see Barn, and news soon spread that Roger would be executed in Loguetown.
  • After half a year in Impel Down, Barn heard his cell door open and realized a newcomer had arrived.

Ch. 39Prison turmoil

Barn heard Golden Lion Shiki arrive in Impel Down’s Infinite Hell, where the prisoners’ sudden chatter revealed their histories and Barn’s identity. After Barn explained why Roger had surrendered, Shiki asked him to escape with him and go see Roger.

  • Golden Lion Shiki arrived in Infinite Hell, where he taunted Leonard about his wife and Leonard broke down before the other prisoners joined the commotion.
  • Barn learned the stories of Leonard, Bankross, Harrenz, and Oniwood, then told Shiki that he was in his thirties despite looking seventeen because of the Life Fruit.
  • Shiki recognized Barn as the man who had freed slaves and killed nearly two hundred Celestial Dragons at Mary Geoise.
  • Barn told Shiki that Roger had surrendered because he was terminally ill and wanted to act freely, leaving Shiki to reconsider how well he had understood his rival.
  • Shiki asked Barn to escape with him and go see Roger.

Ch. 40A jailbreak in progress

The Golden Lion escaped Impel Down by cutting off his own feet, then freed Barn and Oniwood and helped them break out of their cells. Barn recruited Leonard into his mercenary guild, and the group prepared to leave Infinite Hell together.

  • The Golden Lion severed his own feet to escape his Seastone restraints, then used his Float-Float Fruit to bend the cell bars and fly free.
  • The Golden Lion returned with Sakuragi and Kujū in place of his feet and cut Barn's chains; Barn removed the hooks from his back and healed his wounds.
  • The Golden Lion gave Oniwood Bizen Osafune Nagamitsu, and Oniwood freed himself before testing Barn's skill with a sword strike.
