After Konoha survived the invasion, Hiruzen Sarutobi decided to step down and lead a northern expedition against Kumogakure. Jiraiya agreed to accompany him and help protect Naruto, while Tsunade was slated to become the Fifth Hokage.

- After Jiraiya returned, Hiruzen asked him to support Tsunade as the next Hokage and revealed that he planned to bring Naruto on the expedition.
