Background / History

Naruto is the son of Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki. He becomes an orphan following the Nine-Tails’ Rampage. Obito later admits causing the rampage and driving his parents to their deaths; this revelation also exposes Naruto’s parentage to Konoha shinobi who had not known he was the Fourth Hokage’s son 168.

At the academy, Naruto is boisterous and has few regular playmates: Choji and Shikamaru are among the only students usually willing to play with him. Sasuke regards him as the class’s dead last. Naruto nevertheless repeatedly declares his ambition to become Hokage, and he celebrates being assigned to the same team as Sakura, whom he likes 1 18 25 33.

Appearance

  • Hair and eyes: Blond hair and blue eyes 156.
  • Clothing: Wears orange clothing, including an orange jacket seen during the fighting against Madara 128 175.
  • Early height: Yemu stands approximately a head taller during their Chunin Exam match 73.
  • Six-tailed state: Blood-red eyes, a skeletal chakra covering, white bones, claws, and six thrashing tails 97.
  • Controlled tailed-beast state: A golden chakra cloak or armor, sometimes accompanied by a giant Nine-Tails avatar 173 184.
  • Six Paths features: A sun mark on his palm and black Truth-Seeking Orbs behind him 175 184.

Personality

Naruto is loud, competitive, and eager for acknowledgment. He challenges Yemu partly because he resents being ignored in favor of Sasuke. His bravado is not constant: when Yemu unexpectedly appears behind him, he immediately denies wanting a fight. His affection for Sakura also makes him reluctant to admit weakness in front of her 54 61.

His protective instincts frequently outweigh his fear. He wounds his own hand to remind himself not to retreat from Zabuza, stands before Sakura despite his injuries in the Forest of Death, and demands greater power to prevent Hiruzen and Jiraiya from dying in Kumogakure 33 53 97.

Naruto favors dialogue over war and remains unwilling to dismiss former companions as enemies. After three years, Kakashi recognizes his increased emotional maturity, while Naruto argues that fear of Yemu could itself provoke another war. He also distinguishes Qingxue’s emotional breakdown from deliberate murderous intent and condemns Sasuke for humiliating Kurotsuchi during the tournament 90 154 204.

His idealism places him in direct opposition to Yemu’s methods. Although he once admires Yemu’s strength and wants to protect people as Yemu does, he later rejects peace enforced through fear as domination. Even after repeated defeats, he continues trying to reach Yemu and insists that Kurama is his comrade rather than a resource to be seized 125 173 182 184.

Abilities & Skills

Multiple Shadow Clone Technique

Naruto’s most frequently relied-upon ninjutsu creates large numbers of combat duplicates 73.

  • Deploys one hundred clones during the Chunin Exams and over one thousand within his consciousness while resisting Kurama 73 104.
  • Creates thousands of clones to bombard Madara with Wind Release attacks 176.
  • Produces over one thousand clones in Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, each capable of forming a Rasenshuriken 183.
  • Uses clones for coordinated attacks and surprise strikes; numbers alone do not overcome Yemu’s speed or area attacks 183 184.

Nine-Tails Chakra and Transformation

Kurama supplies chakra that strengthens Naruto, heals injuries, and enables increasingly powerful transformations 96 97 173.

  • Recovers from the Fourth Raikage’s blow through Nine-Tails chakra 96.
  • Uses claws and chakra tails in his three-tailed state; his six-tailed form overwhelms the Raikage and Killer B together 97.
  • Initially risks losing control and allowing Kurama to escape. Yemu must intervene inside his consciousness to end the six-tailed rampage 97 104.
  • Later synchronizes his will with Kurama’s power in Complete Form, manifesting a giant chakra avatar 173.
  • Remains vulnerable to tailed-beast extraction: losing Kurama leaves him near death until Minato transfers chakra to him 175.

Wind Release and Rasenshuriken

Naruto uses spiraling Wind Release attacks individually and through coordinated clone barrages 173 176 183.

  • Severs the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path’s extraction chains with Rasenshuriken 173.
  • Uses Ultra-Big Ball Rasenshuriken, Spiraling Rasenshuriken Barrage, and Spiral Bullet against Madara 176.
  • Launches three Sage Art: Wind Release: Big Ball Rasenshuriken in a surprise attack against Yemu 183.
  • Combines an Ultra-Big Ball Wind Release: Rasenshuriken infused with Six Paths power, senjutsu, and Nine-Tails chakra with Sasuke’s Susanoo assault 185.
  • Cannot penetrate Yemu’s superior defenses: Chaos Star Break cuts through his mass barrage, and Chakra Prayer Beads destroy his three giant senjutsu attacks 183.

Six Paths Sage Mode

The Sage of Six Paths’ power and chakra from all nine tailed beasts allow Naruto to combine senjutsu with multiple tailed-beast powers 175 184.

  • Manifests black Truth-Seeking Orbs and phantom images of the nine tailed beasts 184.
  • Uses Sage Art: Super Tailed Beast Bomb Rasenshuriken, creating attacks of different chakra natures 184.
  • Converts six Truth-Seeking Orbs into shuriken for Truth-Seeking Orb: Rasenshuriken Barrage 184.
  • Yemu swallows the tailed-beast attacks with a spatial rift and evades all six orb shuriken 184.

Persuasion

Naruto repeatedly attempts to resolve conflict through appeals to friendship, protection, and peace—the approach described in chapter titles as “talk no jutsu” 128 156 173.

  • Challenges Yemu’s claim that destruction can save the shinobi world 156 182.
  • Serves as a potential diplomatic bridge because Konoha’s advisers believe his former friendship with Yemu may help them understand him 154.
  • Fails to persuade Yemu to abandon forced unification; Yemu dismisses his ideals as naive 128 182.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Shuriken — Throws them at Yemu during their Chunin Exam match, without landing a hit 73.
  • Truth-Seeking Orbs — Six Paths chakra constructs used as offensive shuriken rather than ordinary carried weapons 184.

Relationships

  • Yemu Hyuga — Academy peer, former friend, and ideological opponent. Naruto admires his protective strength but opposes unification through force; he later attends Yemu’s wedding 125 154 182 210.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Team 7 teammate and persistent rival. Their disagreement over Yemu’s rule culminates in a reluctant joint battle against him 25 181 185.
  • Sakura Haruno — Teammate and romantic interest. Naruto repeatedly seeks her attention and protects her; she rushes to treat him when Kurama’s extraction leaves him dying 25 53 175 198.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Team 7 teacher. Kakashi recognizes Naruto’s growing maturity and accompanies him as a guard at the Five Kage Summit 154 187.
  • Jiraiya — Mentor and protector, whom Naruto calls “Pervy Sage.” Jiraiya initially opposes sending him to Kumogakure, then accompanies him and helps cover the retreat 81 96 104.
  • Kurama / Nine-Tails — Sealed tailed beast whose early mockery and attempts to escape give way to cooperation. Naruto explicitly calls him a comrade while resisting Madara’s extraction 73 97 173.
  • Minato Namikaze — Father. The reanimated Minato saves Naruto with his remaining half of Nine-Tails chakra; they later reunite after Yemu’s victory 175 188.
  • Kushina Uzumaki — Mother, whose death Obito claims responsibility for during his confession 168.
  • Obito Uchiha — Enemy responsible for the Nine-Tails’ Rampage. Later extracts tailed-beast chakra from Naruto to revive the God Tree’s remains 168 188.
  • Qingxue Uchiha — Overwhelms Naruto with her sword and Red Chains. Despite the attack, Naruto tells Hiruzen and Jiraiya that she was experiencing an emotional breakdown and had not tried to kill him 87 90.
  • Shikamaru Nara and Choji Akimichi — Among Naruto’s few regular childhood playmates 18.
