Background / History

Chen Yang arrives in the Douluo World alone and without anyone to rely on. Tom, the chief of Falling Wind Village, takes him in and raises him as his own grandson. Despite possessing innate full Soul Power, Chen Yang receives no support from Spirit Hall because Su Yuntao judges his newly awakened Master Ball to be a worthless martial soul 1.

His situation changes when Tom brings Xiao Wu to the village. Chen Yang recognizes her as the hundred-thousand-year Soft-Bone Rabbit in human form, and her arrival activates his Fortune Plunder System. After an unsuccessful first capture, he persuades her to enter the Master Ball willingly by claiming it contains entertaining things 1.

Chen Yang subsequently learns that bonding with Xiao Wu and disrupting Tang San’s opportunities produces system rewards. His knowledge of the original course of events becomes a practical advantage: he can identify valuable companions, anticipate threats, and target resources that would otherwise benefit Tang San 2 7 20.

Appearance

  • Build: Straight, well-proportioned, and already 1.85 meters tall at twelve 22.
  • Features: Increasingly defined and described as handsome and striking after the six-year time skip 22.
  • Bearing: Carries himself with a presence beyond that of his peers, attributed in the passage to Soul Power nourishing his body 22.

Personality

Chen Yang is opportunistic and calculating. He quickly turns battles, relationships, and foreknowledge into sources of experience, money, and system rewards. His attitude toward Tang San becomes noticeably friendlier once he realizes that defeating him can yield Rare Candy; he then charges two gold coins for each future challenge 12 13.

He is affectionate toward his companions and grateful to his guardians. He sincerely thanks Tom for arranging his education, worries that Xiao Wu’s identity could expose her to danger, and insists that Ah Yin be treated as a companion rather than dismissed as merely a plant-type Soul Beast 3 5 34. His teasing often accompanies practical support, including cultivation instruction, healing, and resources for his disciples 11 23 26.

His protectiveness does not prevent cruelty or manipulation. He secretly interferes with fights, conceals his responsibility for major incidents, orders Yveltal to drain the academy’s inhabitants, and engineers conflict between Tang San and Liu Erlong. He later uses his control over the restoration of Yu Xiaogang’s martial soul—and the prospect of extending his life—as leverage over Liu Erlong 9 18 30 48 49 50.

Abilities & Skills

Master Ball / Master Ball Pro Max

Chen Yang’s martial soul captures beings who can then fight and grow under his direction 1 2.

  • Capture capacity: Initially permits one Soul Beast per ten Soul Power levels 2.
  • Capture reliability: Chen Yang later determines that a Soul Beast can avoid capture by physically dodging the ball. Xiao Wu’s first capture is an exception that he suspects relates to her half-human, half-beast condition 1 7.
  • Automatic advancement benefits: Captures can grant Soul Power, Soul Rings, and improvements to his physique without conventional ring absorption 2 15.
  • Aura concealment: Xiao Wu’s capture removes her detectable Soul Beast aura, preventing Soul Masters from identifying her nature 3.
  • Mental communication: Allows telepathic exchanges with contracted companions, including private conversations with multiple members 2 16 33.
  • Humanoid contracts: The Pro Max upgrade adds one humanoid Pokémon contract per ten levels, alongside the Soul Beast allowance 18.
  • Fusion compatibility: Contracted members can combine martial souls regardless of the usual compatibility restrictions 18 37.

Master Ball Soul Skills

Soul Skill Function Applications / Limits
First: Rapid Healing Restores a captured companion’s injuries and expended Soul Power inside the ball 2. A broken leg and a minor scratch both heal in ten minutes. Initially does not heal Chen Yang himself; later also restores his contracted disciples 2 4 39.
Second: Perfect Home Creates each captured Pokémon’s preferred habitat 15. Da Ming receives a lake and Er Ming a forest. The environment also relieves fatigue and restores stamina 15.
Third: Soul Skill Sharing Temporarily lends Chen Yang a contracted Pokémon’s full move set 15. Used for flight, Blue Silver Domain, Entanglement, Sleep Powder, and Xiao Wu’s Teleport 23 25 48 49.
Fifth: Soul Power Enhancement Gradually increases the cultivation of companions inside the Master Ball 23. Zhu Zhuqing notices accelerated cultivation immediately after entering 23.

Fortune Plunder System

The system rewards actions that deprive Tang San, the “child of destiny,” of fortune or hinder his development 2.

  • Rewards strengthened bonds with people who would otherwise support Tang San 2 3 23.
  • Responds to damaged confidence, disrupted relationships, lost opportunities, and delayed cultivation 5 8 15 48 49.
  • Provides techniques, skill discs, Pokémon-related equipment, recipes, and other resources rather than a single fixed reward type 2 3 12 17 23.

Fenghou Qimen

Chen Yang receives several techniques independent of his martial soul’s ordinary Soul Skills 2 5 16.

  • Earth River Cart: Manipulates earth and stone within his Qimen formation. He creates a defensive boulder, reshapes it into a three-meter Rock Snake, redirects Tang San’s stone projectiles, and uses a stone hand against the Boa Viper 2 9 13.
  • Heaven Character Illusion Technique — Hundred Flowers in Chaos: Produces duplicate images and disguises Soul Ring colors and auras. He uses it to conceal Xiao Wu’s attempted evolution and protect himself from being targeted for his red rings 9 15.
  • Luan Jin Tuo: Disconnects a target from time and immobilizes them, with its effect tied to the weight of the target’s destiny. Chen Yang uses it against Tang Hao before coordinating his companions’ attacks 16 17.

Everlasting Primordial Essence Art

This cultivation method creates a sea-of-qi vortex in the dantian that automatically absorbs and refines surrounding energy 3 4.

  • Allows Chen Yang to cultivate while eating or sleeping rather than only during deliberate training 4.
  • Can be taught to Xiao Wu and human disciples such as Zhu Zhuqing 11 30.
  • At Xiao Wu’s sixth layer, reduces Soul Skill consumption and stores surplus Soul Power for later use; Chen Yang explains these benefits to Zhu Zhuqing 26.
  • Remains important alongside battle experience: Chen Yang warns Xiao Wu that leveling will slow and that she must continue practicing it 13.

Z-Moves and Power Transfer

Chen Yang can channel his Soul Power into contracted companions to strengthen their abilities and activate Z-Moves 3 4.

  • Pulverizing Pancake: Uses the Normal-type Z-Crystal. Xiao Wu shatters a huge boulder, while Zhu Zhuqing later knocks Zhao Wuji unconscious 4 28.
  • Continental Crush: Used through Er Ming during the battle against Tang Hao 17.
  • World-Ending Azure Dragon Strike: The Dragonium Z’s described exclusive move combines dragon, water, and lightning into a defense-breaking shockwave; no use is documented in the supplied passages 15.
  • Physical recoil: The empowered attack can exceed the user’s bodily tolerance. Xiao Wu breaks her leg during the first test, and Zhu Zhuqing badly injures her arm against Zhao Wuji 4 28.

Companion Training and Skill Transfer

Chen Yang’s contracted companions gain experience through battle, and he receives half of Xiao Wu’s earned experience 7 8.

  • Stronger opponents provide more experience, making high-level sparring partners especially valuable 12 40.
  • Reusable technique discs teach moves such as Cut, Flash, Throat Chop, and Light Energy Barrier 8 16 23 34.
  • Uses Pokéblocks, Lucky Egg, and Rare Candy to accelerate growth or improve combat attributes 10 13 23 24.
  • Enables Zhu Zhuqing and Ning Rongrong’s Glazed Nether Armor, a fusion that overwhelms Zhao Wuji but exhausts both participants’ Soul Power 37 39.

Distortion World

Chen Yang gains access to a private realm after Tang Hao’s death. It is also called the Reversal Realm or Inversion Space in the supplied passages 17 18 24.

  • Serves as a refuge, storage space, and later a domestic base for his group 18 32 40.
  • Supports Berry cultivation and Pokéblock production 18 40.
  • Allows him to move companions between the realm and the real world 32 38.
  • Conceals possessions such as the Dark Ball after it extracts Luo Sanpao 49.

Command of Yveltal

Yveltal supplies both transportation and a covert method of weakening enemies 25 30.

  • Fly: Instantly returns Chen Yang to places he has previously visited 25.
  • Life Absorption: Drains both life force and Soul Power from Soul Masters. Chen Yang orders repeated small-scale absorption across Shrek Academy while excluding himself and his three companions 30.
  • Can store stolen life energy or digest it; Chen Yang directs how the accumulated energy is handled 37.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Z-Ring and Z-Crystals — Receives Normal-type, Ground-type, and Dragonium Z crystals for empowering companions’ attacks 3 15.
  • Dynamax Band — Allows Pokémon to Dynamax and changes their moves; awarded after Da Ming’s capture 15.
  • Reusable technique discs — Include Cut, Flash, Throat Chop, and Light Energy Barrier 8 16 23 34.
  • Lucky Egg — Given to Xiao Wu to increase experience earned after battles 9 10.
  • Rare Candy — Instantly raises a Pokémon’s level by one; Chen Yang gives his first candy to Xiao Wu 12 13.
  • Pokéblock Maker / Machine — Produces food from cultivated Berries, supporting a renewable supply 17 18.
  • High-grade Pokéblocks — Includes recipes that permanently improve combat statistics, such as Special Defense and Soul Skill damage 23 24.
  • Quick Claw — A held item described as guaranteeing that its Pokémon attacks first 23.
  • Pokédex — Reveals evolution paths and their conditions, including Ah Yin’s level-70 requirement for a human form 32 34.
  • Healing Berries — Includes the rare Sitrus Berry used to restore Zhao Wuji’s Great Strength Vajra Bear for further training battles 39 40.
  • Dark Balls — System items capable of stealing martial souls. Chen Yang presents one as a “Soul Guide Ball” and uses it to take and later return Luo Sanpao 33 46 49 50.
  • Tang Hao’s Soul Bones — Has Er Ming retrieve a complete set after Tang Hao’s death; the supplied passages do not document Chen Yang absorbing them 17.
  • Rank-one Soul Tool blueprints — A complete set awarded for weakening the child of destiny; Chen Yang finds the everyday devices more promising than most of the weapons 37.

Relationships

  • Tom — Guardian and adoptive grandfather figure. Raises Chen Yang, brings Xiao Wu into their household, and arranges the children’s academy admission 1 5.
  • Jerry — Tom’s younger brother and Chen Yang’s “Second Grandpa.” Handles enrollment, offers guidance, and stops Yu Xiaogang from repeatedly bothering the children 5 7 12.
  • Grandma Spike — Jerry’s wife; warmly welcomes Chen Yang and Xiao Wu with apple pie 7.
  • Xiao Wu — First captured companion and closest partner. Their initial deception and rivalry develop into trust, affectionate companionship, and a romantic bond; her devotion later helps fulfill an evolution condition 1 2 3 37 38.
  • Er Ming — Contracted Titan Giant Ape and major combat ally. Helps defeat Tang Hao, retrieve his Soul Bones, and uncover Ah Yin’s hiding place 15 17 20.
  • Da Ming — Contracted Sky Azure Bull Python. Detects Tang Hao’s surveillance and provides decisive lightning attacks during the confrontation 15 16 17.
  • Ah Yin — Captured Blue Silver Emperor whom Chen Yang restores and trains. Becomes a powerful, gentle companion and prepares meals after learning to cook from him 20 22 32 35.
  • Yveltal — Flying companion that obeys his orders to drain life force and Soul Power 25 30 37.
  • Zhu Zhuqing — Disciple rescued from pursuers. Chen Yang requires loyalty, supplies cultivation resources, and helps her challenge the fate associated with Dai Mubai 23 25 26.
  • Ning Rongrong — Wealthy disciple and contracted humanoid Pokémon. Seeks martial-soul evolution and greater strength under his instruction, while worrying about a future conflict with her sect 33 34 40.
  • Wang Qiu’er / Three-Eyed Golden Lion — Voluntarily joins him because his presence feels comfortable and promises growth. Her position as Star Dou Forest’s Auspicious Beast makes Chen Yang cautious about discovery 43 44 47.
  • Tang San — Principal rival and recurring source of fortune-plundering rewards. Chen Yang disrupts his opportunities, profits from his challenges, and increasingly undermines his allies 2 13 15 48.
  • Tang Hao — Threatens Chen Yang to obtain his growth method. Chen Yang prepares an ambush and directs Da Ming and Er Ming to kill him 16 17.
  • Yu Xiaogang — Antagonistic researcher seeking Chen Yang’s cultivation secrets. Chen Yang sabotages him, drains his vitality through Yveltal, and temporarily removes Luo Sanpao 11 30 37 49 50.
  • Liu Erlong — Approaches him as part of Yu Xiaogang’s scheme. Chen Yang turns the encounter against her, misleading her about the Dark Ball and using Yu Xiaogang’s condition as leverage 44 46 49 50.
  • Zhao Wuji — Coerced training opponent for Chen Yang’s disciples. Chen Yang also heals him to make repeated experience-producing battles possible 38 39 40.
