The next day, after spending the night in fear, the residents peered through the cracks in their doors and saw long, white, barrel-shaped objects lined up neatly along the streets.
Their curiosity stirred. Some of the bolder residents looked around through their windows, and, seeing none of the white-armored soldiers who had entered the city yesterday, gently opened their doors. They cautiously approached the white containers, feeling them here and knocking there to see whether they were some kind of treasure.
The Holy Light Cleric sleeping inside, however, could only feel helpless. They had worked all night yesterday, and then heavy rain had begun to fall. Unwilling to disturb the residents, they had finally deployed the portable Sleep Pods attached to their armor and rested right there in the streets.
Who could have known that someone would be so energetic first thing in the morning, and bold enough to come poking at his Sleep Pod? Its built-in alarm would not stop ringing.
"Uncle, what kind of treasure do you think this is? It even glows!"
"No idea! But with those sleek lines, it should fetch quite a bit. If we sell it, we might actually have enough to eat this month!"
"But there are loads of them in the street!"
"Hurry up! If those people from yesterday come back, someone else will get it!"
"Then let's carry it off! The timid starve, while the bold eat their fill. The nobles in this city haven't been human lately! They're taxing us so heavily."
"Right!" The older, middle-aged man nodded.
Hearing the uncle and nephew talking outside, the Holy Light Cleric could no longer pretend he had heard nothing. Otherwise, he really would end up in someone else's house.
Resigned, he opened the thin pod lid. "Er, friend, this isn't worth anything.
