Background

Lü Qingzhu is Lü Zhongtang's only daughter and the granddaughter of Taiyi Sect's Old Ancestor, Lü Yinlin. When she was five, Lü Zhongtang brought her to visit Lü Yinlin in the deep mountains; the Old Ancestor became unusually fond of her and kept her by his side for several years. 309 354

She was raised close to Lü Yinlin's austere mountain life and developed little interest in luxury. At thirteen, Lü Yinlin created the Winter Plum Swordplay specifically to nurture her naturally solitary disposition and a Dao heart “as firm as iron.” 267 312

Appearance

Lü Qingzhu is described as cold and exceptionally beautiful, with fair features and an austere bearing. Six years after her first encounter with Duan Rong, her appearance has matured from that of a young girl into that of a composed woman. 297 443

  • Often carries a long sword. 297 514
  • Wore a light-blue cloth robe during her battle with Blood Monk Wuxiang. 297
  • Her reserved expression and cool temperament are repeatedly compared to a solitary winter plum. 312 541

Personality

Lü Qingzhu is independent, direct, and detached from worldly pleasures. During a visit to Lanxiang Courtyard, she refuses alcohol and asks only to hear Orchid Shadow play the zither; she leaves immediately after listening and performing a piece with her. 267

Her outward coldness does not make her uncaring. She questions whether Lü Yinlin has found happiness after a thousand years of cultivation, brings him a xun from her travels, and listens beside him as he plays. 312 She later shows patience in teaching Shen Mizhi and devotion to raising her son, Shen'er. 652 689

She is also proud and resolute. She resists Lü Zhongtang's attempts to control her movements, repeatedly challenges Duan Rong to test the gap between them, and ultimately severs her own meridians rather than submit to marriage with Li Ruozhou. 309 541 567

Abilities & Skills

Winter Plum Swordplay and Sword Intent

Lü Yinlin personally created the Winter Plum Swordplay for Lü Qingzhu to suit and cultivate her solitary nature. 312

  • Her swordsmanship can contend with Blood Monk Wuxiang's heavy Mount Sumeru Saber, gradually suppressing him through the force contained within her techniques. 297
  • She manifests Sword Light and had comprehended Intent while still in the Essence Qi Realm. 444
  • Her Sword Intent becomes more refined after her time in the Gloomy Dark Forest. 541
  • Duan Rong disarms her bare-handed in a single exchange after exploiting minute disruptions in her sword's force and timing. 541

Flying Willow Drifting Step

Lü Qingzhu's movement technique had reached the True Qi Realm by the time of the roadside ambush. 295

  • Allows her to burst through dense black smoke and land far from the battlefield with great agility. 295
  • Her lightness skill is comparable to Blood Monk Wuxiang's in speed and mobility. 295
  • Even while pursued by two opponents, she continues fighting until her True Qi is nearly exhausted. 298

Yinghuo Divine Soul Illusion

Lü Qingzhu possesses the Divine Soul illusion technique Yinghuo, which she uses against powerful beasts. 450

  • Can temporarily control the Suan Yu Beast, creating an opportunity to escape. 450
  • After using it once, she cannot activate it again for six hours. 450

Sword Instruction

After recovering from her injuries, Lü Qingzhu gives Shen Mizhi detailed sword instruction, including demonstrations and explanations from multiple angles. 652

  • Shen Mizhi comes to regard her as a master because of her patience and thorough teaching. 652
  • Her instruction transmits her own cold and agile sword path; Duan Rong notes that this differs from Shen Mizhi's killing-oriented path. 658

Relationships

  • Duan Rong — Initially connected through an involuntary encounter during a Filthy Blood Sect ambush, which leaves Lü Qingzhu determined to kill him in order to refine her Dao heart. Their hostility gradually gives way to mutual protection, marriage, and a shared son, Duan Shen'er. 355 449 645 664
  • Lü Yinlin — Her grandfather and the Taiyi Sect Old Ancestor. He raised her for part of her childhood, created the Winter Plum Swordplay for her, and later places her in a black jade coffin to treat her self-inflicted meridian injuries. 312 567
  • Lü Zhongtang — Her father. Their relationship is strained by her disobedient travels, but they reconcile after her near-death ordeal. 309 645
  • Li Ruozhou — Intended partner in a proposed alliance between the Taiyi Sect and Heavenly Evolution Sect. Lü Qingzhu rejects the marriage and would rather die than accept it. 501 567
  • Shen Mizhi — Student in swordsmanship. Shen Mizhi deeply respects Lü Qingzhu's patient and detailed guidance. 652
  • Xiao Yu — Lives alongside Lü Qingzhu in Duan Rong's household. The two eventually cooperate in managing the residence and grow harmonious with one another. 650 652
  • Duan Shen'er — Her son with Duan Rong. Lü Qingzhu remains attentive to his growth even while continuing her cultivation. 664 689

Story Role

Xiangu County and the Dilapidated Temple

As a Taiyi Sect Envoy, Lü Qingzhu travels to Xiangu County for the Talent Selection Gathering. 265 354 During a later ambush, she fights Blood Monk Wuxiang and an old farmer alone, is forced into a dilapidated temple, and nearly exhausts her True Qi. 297 298

The incident creates her lasting conflict with Duan Rong. Six years later, she regards their encounter in the temple as an unresolved humiliation and seeks to kill him to eliminate the attachment from her Dao heart. 355 449

Return to Taiyi Sect

After acting without authorization and switching her supervisory post, Lü Qingzhu is retrieved by Lü Zhongtang and reprimanded for leaving Divine Cloud Prefecture for Yuan Yang Prefecture. 309

Back in the Sect, she visits Lü Yinlin and speaks candidly with him about cultivation, happiness, and the emptiness she felt after traveling through the mortal world. 312

Conflict and Reconciliation with Duan Rong

Lü Qingzhu attacks Duan Rong in the Gloomy Dark Forest, where their Sword Light and Saber Light clash. Though she is determined to kill him, a tear falls from her eye as she strikes. 444

She later reveals that killing Duan Rong is meant to help her reach the realms of Karmic Exhaustion and Emotionless Void. However, after Duan Rong saves her from a Fire Weasel, she saves him from the Suan Yu Beast and suffers an injury in his place. 449

Marriage Alliance Crisis

The Heavenly Evolution Sect proposes a marriage alliance between Lü Qingzhu and Li Ruozhou. 501 Lü Qingzhu confronts Li Ruozhou in the wilderness, takes his Longevity Lock, and has A Mo defeat him to force his compliance. 553

When the alliance cannot be avoided, she and Duan Rong disrupt the engagement ceremony through a disguise involving Shen Mizhi. 566 Lü Qingzhu later severs her own meridians rather than marry Li Ruozhou, requiring Lü Yinlin's intervention to save her life. 567 640

Family Life and Cultivation

After recovering, Lü Qingzhu reconciles with Lü Zhongtang and openly expresses affection for Duan Rong. 645 She later gives birth to their son, Duan Shen'er. 664

Though motherhood softens some of her formerly icy demeanor, she remains determined to cultivate, heal her damaged dantian, and eventually reach the Cave Illumination Realm so she can remain Duan Rong's long-lived Daoist partner. 679 771
